Clarks Hotel
Cantonment,Varanasi - View on map
"Clarks was the first tourist hotel in Varanasi and is showing its age. Rooms and decor are a bit tired. However, we found int comfortable and the service reasonable. We enjoyed a swim in the pool at the back of the hotel, and enjoyed numerous meals in the restaurant. I like Indian food and found that the presentation and quantities served in restaurant to be good. I loved the vegeterian food there. If I return to Varanasi I would be happy to stay there again."

Hotel Hindusthan International

"just to set the stage: i live in los angeles, travel for work quite a bit (have highest statuses on airlines and at major hotel chains)and am used to elite treatment. so after having read all the mixed reviews on hhi, i was very concerned it was not going to be to my liking. i even considered canceling the reservation, but taj and even raddison were fully booked, so i had to keep it. and i am very happy i did. i actually liked the hotel and do not understand the negative reviews at all. yes, if you are expecting a crystal flute of chilled dom perignon upon arrival, you probably shouldn't go to varanasi on the first place. but there was a welcome drink! yes, there was some wear and tear in the bathroom, but the sheraton hotel i once stayed at in connecticut was in much worse shape. at hhi, all the piping worked as well as ac. the staff was super attentive. room service arrived 15-20 minutes after the order was placed (probably the fastest i've ever experienced). being from the us, we were careful about eating any outside food, so we had all our meals at the hotel and they were excellent! we could not wait until the next meal (i'm serious). on the first morning, the doorman recommended we hire a tuk tuk for the day and that was the best experience! the driver brought us to all the places we wanted to go and suggested more interesting ones. a tip, if you do go on tuk tuk in varanasi, it is always helpful to take a shot of whisky beforehand (it makes the "i'm going to die now" feeling more manageable). overall, hhi exceeded my expectations. great value for the money. easy booking through agoda. i will definitely stay there again and recommend for everyone else to do so as well."

Radisson Hotel Varanasi
Cantonment,Varanasi - View on map
"I have been to Varanasi almost 20 times. And I have seen the good, bad and the ugly. Pros- Rooms very clean, very descent staff who are not that crazy for tip. We got a spacious room. The room service is very good. The restaurants in the hotel are great. The food is awesome . Every dish we tried, veg or non veg was delicious. Cons : The hotel is old so some ameneties have worn out due to use. The restaurant takes 20-30 minutues to serve food when ordered from ala carte. Would definitely come back here. Its about 5km from the Vishwanath Temple . You can get Auto or Ola very easily. The cost is approx 100-150 inr depending on your bargaining skills. Sarnath is super close , about 20 mins. There arn't a lot of places to eat around this area so you have eat at the hotel itself. The food is pricey but tastes great."

Hotel Madin
Cantonment,Varanasi - View on map
"We opted to stay at Hotel Madin instead of staying at one of the hotels on the Ganges. It's about a half hour drive to the river (45 minutes in traffic), but we were very happy that we made the decision to stay here and would do it again. The rooms are brand new, high-quality, and gorgeous. The food, both buffet and cook-to-order are excellent. There are mosquitos in the dining room which the hotel needs to eliminate, but that's about the only complaint we had. Otherwise, this is probably the best place to stay in all of Varanasi."

More about Varanasi

Varanasi is an ancient city, home to the holy River Ganges, which is one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Varanasi is located in India’s Uttar Pradesh State, and is accessible by train from most other cities, by bus from some cities, and served by Varanasi Airport.

The Ganges River sees thousands of pilgrims every day, as it is a very holy site for Hindus and bathing in this river carry a great deal of spiritual significance. For visitors, just walking around the different steps – known as Ghats - and witnessing the religious ceremonies is an incredible experience. The river is also used as a burial site for those who were able to make it there in time for their death. While it’s a unique experience to witness most of what goes around in and around the river, it also offers a great deal of cultural and spiritual education so it’s important to be a respectful and open-minded visitor.

Spend at least one day exploring Varanasi on foot. The city is full of interesting and mostly ancient architecture and very small alleyways that are often too small for even the rickshaws. Walking among the neighborhoods and watching the activity of people all around is a great way to really get to know the city.

Of course, Varanasi is also home to many temples and places of worship. Near the famously intricate Dashashwamedh Ghat can be found the famous Vishwanath Temple, one of the holiest temples dedicated to the Lord Shiva. It’s an incredibly beautiful structure that carries a massive religious significance, definitely worth visiting.

There’s much more to see and experience in Varanasi, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to find out where the attractions and hotels can be found in this interesting city.
