Traveler impressions of Chiang Rai
We thought the Black house was the most interesting museum/temple we'd seen on our entire 3 week trip through SE Asia until we found The White Temple and art gallery! Oh Dear, what fascinating attractions Chiang Rai has to offer! Add to that the warm friendly small town ambiance, great shopping, and really good inexpensive restaurants and you've found the perfect vacation paradise!
There are so many Doi and national park up in the mountain. Visiting hill tribes, elephants, the border market, and so on are also possible.
The livestyle of the people is slower than in Bangkok, the song-teow transporters are sometimes taking advantage from tourists.
You can visit beautiful temples, shopping everywhere. The food are plentiful, can find everywhere, most of them cheap and good.
I travelled to Chiang Mai with my parents. We had a really interesting time there visiting The Golden Triangle and learning about the opium run.
Not much to offer in the City Centre apart from the Night Market and the usual stores. However out of the city there are many attractions such boat trips, and visits to Hill Tribes.
There are many activities in Chiang Rai, not just the natural exploring but also the art and cultural in the heritage province
The Black House and White Temple not to miss. The evening market is great on Saturday. Easy to get around here.
Ban Duu, hot springs 20 mins drive north of town are super relaxing. A must. Best hot springs in C Rai.
The weather is nice, much cooler than Chiang Mai. I visited the Wat Rong Khun (White temple) and Golden Triangle.
A very nice city up in the north. Easy to reach from Bangkok and other places by air. Very nice surroundings.
Chiang Rai is a nice, laid-back city, still - thought unfortunately on the way to becoming another Chiang Mai, which has becoming over-developed.
Chang RAI IS MUCH BETTER SUITED IN OFFERING QUALITY NATURE ACTIVITIES THAN THE BNGKOK AREA, WHITH BETTER ACCOMMODATIONS AT AMUCH BETTER PRICE THAN BANGKOK.
There's not many things to talk about Chiang Rai, cause it's just a little copy of Chiang Mai and on the road to Golden Triangle.
Chiang Rai is a lovely place to relax, has affordable delicious food, is cooler than Chiang Mai at night and less crowded too! However, if you are geared for high octane entertainment, Chiang Mai is better.
The city is small and not very interesting. Charming for sure but apart from the White Temple, it isn't really worth staying long time.
Medium size city, not polluted (except in March-April). Unspoilt, relatively few tourists. Intresting and beautiful surroundings.
Not a big city but with peaceful, traffic problem less, food are nice. overall is the very relax city.
A quiet and relaxing town, close to Golden Triangle and Hill Tribes - who once used opium as medicinal purposes.
Chiang Rai is ideally located for trips to the northwest ot Thailand including the golden triangle area.
Chiang Rai is a quiet place and is rather laid back. The people are very friendly and they go out of their way to accommodate visitors.
Whilst in Chiang Rai visited Golden Triangle, Long Neck Village Tribe, travelled to border of Northern Thailand & Burma Mae Sai, Visted White Temple.
Chiang Rai is very good to see, we went to Maesai the Myamar Boarder was very good trip we enjoy a lot there, a lot of things to buy, a lot of atraction to visit it was a very good trip
Chiangrai is in the northern of Thailand beyond Chaingmai the famous city.the culture of people in Chiangrai is similar to that of Chiangmai.
It is a large enough city with plenty of minor attractions. The real attraction is its proximity to the Border and the last "comfortable" stay before getting there.
It is far from Chiang Mai,be prepared to spend some time driving up north, and make several stops in between.
Protect forest and environment, control smoke from fire forest, promote non plastic use for food package
wonderful laid back city with lots of opportunities to travel or sport activities. awesome walking street but commercial night market.
See the Yet Yot Tempel in the center and also the Wat Prew Kaw. Outside CR go to the White Tempel, the Black House ( Baan Dam) of the national artist Tawan Dutchanee on the way to Rachapan University.
Awesome place, hire a driver for the day to show you the best spots. Spend half day at spa, the shopping at the snake place is very reasonably priced compared to other tourist hot spots.

More about Chiang Rai
Visitors typically spend a night or two in the city center, or Amphoe Muang Chiang Rai, before heading out into the backcountry. With the borders of Myanmar and Laos just over the horizon, there is plenty of culture to explore. The three countries meet at the Golden Triangle, a once lawless land that has replaced opium cultivation with the safer and more reliable tourist trade. Attractions here include the Hall of Opium, Burmese-styled temples, and excellent hill-tribe trekking opportunities.
Chiang Rai’s peak season is in December and January, a time that attracts many domestic travelers to enjoy the cooler temperatures the region offers. The city’s best hotels are located along the Kok River or near the centrally located night bazaar, and they provide excellent assistance in arranging the activities you would like to partake in.
Be sure to check out the interactive map of Chiang Rai for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
