"This has to be one of the best hotels in Hakodate. Convenient location just beside the JR Hakodate station. There are shops and restaurants nearby and it's just a few minutes walk from the morning market. Great onsen, too! The breakfast choices was great and very filling. We had a great stay!"

La'gent Plaza Hakodate Hokuto
Hokuto,Hakodate - View on map
"This hotel is located directly outside the train station. It is a short 15min train ride to Hakodate station. Some hotel staff are able to converse in English. The hotel is fairly new and the rooms are quite spacious for two people with 4 large luggages. There is a souvenir shop located on the ground level of the hotel and a ramen shop which makes it easy to access food and purchase of gifts instead of buying it from Hakodate - the gifts (eg. Biscuits and chocolates) cost exactly the same from this souvenir shop as the ones in Hakodate and Sapporo. The only difference is some shops are able to sell these souvenirs tax free if you spend over ¥5000. The rooms are neat and clean and the onsen is very enjoyable especially the one on the semi terrace. There is a washer/dryer combo machine on every floor. It takes a number of hours for the dryer to completely dry the clothes so it is advisable to wash thr clothes earlier in the evening. For hotels that provide a separate washer machine and dryer machine, the dryer tends to be more efficient. I had to set my clothes to dry for over 2 hours - the machine was only half full. All in all this hotel is highly recommended!"

JR INN Hakodate

"すごく良かったんです。駅からの近さ、おしゃれなインテリア、スタッフも優しいし、赤レンガ倉庫にも近し... 悪い点はまだ見つかってないです! 次のお泊りをワクワクしております。お楽しみです! JR Inn Hakodate is super great. I've used their hotels in Sapporo and Chitose several times and they've always been my go-to hotel, despite the price. JR Inn Hakodate is only 10 seconds away from the station (only if there are no strong winds! Otherwise you will need to go through the main entrance and not the side door that's close to the hotel). Once you enter the building you can see that the hotel is very up to date and following for COVID-19 regulations. Hand sanitizer sprays from the entrance door, temperature checks, distancing, restaurant buffets (with the plastic gloves and guests having masks on when not eating). Kind of wished there has the alcohol sanitizer sprays on every level nearby the elevator, but that's just me (and probably costs the hotel more). The onsen is lovely. Its a moderate size, with a washing area, inside and outside pool. If you go to the outside pool you can see the train tracks and maybe even see them depart! There is also a parking lot nearby for 600 yen with usage from 14:00-12:00, unlimited. If you're lucky you can park in front of the hotel, otherwise there's a close by parking lot that is just a few minutes away around the corner. Definitely worth the money and stay. Kind of also wished they were more in the central area close to the red bricks but... can't complain since they should be next to the JR station. "

"A fairly new hotel that opened only in October, facilities are clean and new. Onsen area is clean and spacious and the water is extremely hot and comfortable. Located just a 5mins walk from Hakodate station and about 5-10mins walk to the Morning Market, this hotel is ideal for visitors who wish to stay near to Hakodate train station. Value for money."

Hakodate Kokusai Hotel
Hakodate,Hakodate - View on map
"Nice hotel in Hakodate. Less than a 10 minute walk from the JR train station (even in the snow, with suitcases)--a straight shot when you exit the station to the right. The hotel isn't the newest but it was very clean and it did not smell of smoke. The bathroom is larger than the one's we experienced in Tokyo. The Japanese breakfast buffet was delish--who wouldn't love to try a little bit of everything--from sashimi, curry, miso soup, omelets, Hokkaido potatoes/milk/yogurt, etc. The morning market is right between the hotel and the train station, too! The one con was the uncontrollable heating. As someone who is a hot sleeper, I found the room unbearable at night. There is no thermostat or window to open."

Traveler impressions of Hakodate

More about Hakodate

Like Kobe and Yokohama, Hakodate was one of Japan’s first cities opened to trade. It later became the capital of the short-lived Republic of Ezo. Today the city is a popular retreat for domestic tourists, but the culture and history is worth the attention of international travelers as well. It is served by Hakodate Airport, and train services are also available to reach the city.

A top destination for tourists in Hakodate is Motomachi, the historical district. A mix of sites showcase the early days of foreign trade and their traders. A walk from the Higashi Honganji Temple to the Foreign Cemetery makes for a pleasant day and passes by a number of historical consulates and churches, including the Roman Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church. Those interested in the time of the Ezo Republic can visit Fort Goryokaku and the viewing platform of Koryokaku Tower. For the natural experience, head to Mount Hakodate. Locals here say that views of the city rank as one of the Three Best Night Views in the world. Exploration outside the city is offered with an express train going to Lake Onuma which has a mid-sized ski resort adjacent to it. And a scenic drive to Esan makes for a great day trip, especially if heading there in June for the Tsutsuji Festival.
