The town needs improvement. The roads are in poor condition. There aren't many supermarkets. When the temperatures are high, one would like to shop in a place it's not very hot.
Excellent and perhaps the only coast in Sri lanka for Whale and Dolphin watching. Avoad the months of April to July when you experience strong winds and rough seas
Its a difficult journey to come up North to kalpetiya, but worth it. A Kite Surfers paradise. From Dec - Mar one gets a steady 11-17knots breeze from 1000-1600hrs.
The beaches are clean and waters provide for reefs and Dolphin Watching. Recommended that guests stay in the better hotels located in South Kalpitiya rather than the Dutch bay area. Do ensure that you carry some of your snacks & emergency provisions incase you are attempting to rough it out in the Dutch Bay area where the best kite boarding sites are!
Easy to reach via local transport. The people of Kalpitiya in the town were friendly and helpful to the few tourists that stayed there.
Beach properties were expensive to stay in and very remote. Delightful walks in the area to and along the beautiful empty beaches. Very few eating places but everyone very friendly and helpful. Would recommend for a different non touristy experience.
The Kalpitiya Town itself is not much to see. It's rather a place to buy the things you need because that is where all the shops are.
All the hotels and places to go are to the west of Kalpitiya Town. That is where you find the Kalpitiya Lagoon with the sports activities and beautiful nature.
Kalpitiya is a great place for ocean activities such as scuba diving and kite surfing, if you go at the right time.
We missed the scuba diving, snorkling, fishing, and dolphin watching by going in July. Would not recommend July as the time to visit.
