More about Kobe

Kobe was once a port that was established for foreign trade when Japan started opening up to the world. Foreign cultures were soon introduced into the city, and it became a cosmopolitan powerhouse with an emphasis on trade. An earthquake in 1995 destroyed parts of the city and crippled trading potential, but it has since bounced back to a full recovery. Kobe is easy to reach with Kobe Airport accepting domestic flights and Kansai International Airport serving as a major gateway to the area.

One of the biggest draws in Kobe for tourists, especially domestic tourists, is the collection of Western-styled houses called Ijinkan. These were the homes of the foreign traders, and the offices of the trading companies were built in the area known as Kyu-kyoryuchi which includes Chartered Square and the 15th Building. If visiting Kobe in the spring, Fruit Flower Park will definitely need attention as more than 10,000 tulips will be in bloom, and Nunobiki Herb Park is an excellent complement to make for a refreshing day out. For views of the city, head to Kobe Tower near Meriken Park, visit the City Hall Observation Deck, or take a nice hike in the Rock Garden of Mt. Rokko.
