"This was our honeymoon and we went during the month of June 2013. The best part of the resort is the entry through the back waters and the warm reception. The room which we stayed was the heritage mansiona nd it was truely done in a very detailed way keeping in mind the old tharavadus of kerala. The lighting and the extensive use of the wood add to the ambience. Another attraction we really enjoyed was the open bathroom which was attached to the property. That is a really great addition to this wonderful property. Since the room is not with a TV you are forced to stay outside during the daytime and let me say that, it was great to explore the property. There was absolutely no noise and it was hard to hear the honks once we were coming out after the vacation. The concept of not using plastic any where in the propert was really great. For me this was a really great vacation and looking forward to visit there onece more soon. "

"We stayed at this resort for 3 nights in December 2016. The resort is near Kumarakom town on the backwater (Lake Vemband), and is less than 2 years old. We were warmly greeted by Jubi with a garland. While we were sitting at the reception waiting for the check-in process to complete, we were greeted by the owner Prashant Chawla. We struck a nice conversation with Prashant and he was kind enough to upgrade our normal room to a villa room. Later, we were escorted to our room by Lekha. We found the whole check-in process nice and efficient. Our villa room had a nice sitting area facing the long swimming pool that stretches across all the Vilas. The room was very spacious with all the amenities. The bathroom had a rain shower bathing area open to the sky. Complimentary Wi-Fi was provided with no device limitation. The Wi-Fi did have some issues, but was manageable. The resort has an open air restaurant and a cocktail lounge. The management is still waiting for its liquor license. We had most of our meals at this restaurant. The manager Surej was always there to make sure our needs were met. One evening we had invited our friends from the adjoining resort to have dinner with us. Surej made sure our requests for dishes (not on the menu) were catered to. Some of the other restaurant employees Nikhil, Nidhish & Riju took very good care of us. They were always there is make sure our dining experience was nice and enjoyable. The three hostesses, Jubi, Lekha and Priya were always there to make sure all our needs were catered to. Every evening the resort provided complimentary tea/coffee and snacks. They also arranged a complimentary boat ride (Shikara) in the Vemband Lake. In the evening, the resort presented short classical dance and music programs. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the resort. The resort is beautifully kept and run by a set of very professional folks who go the extra mile to please the guests. Both the owner Prashant, and his wife Anu, a"

"Traveled as a couple, the drive is a little confusing with very few direction signs throughout. The turn to the resort from the main road is easy to miss. However, the moment we entered the property we knew it was going to be nice. There's ample parking and the first sight you see at the reception is the beautiful pool ending into the view of the backwater. The check-in was smooth and we got our room upgraded to a Lake View Cottage for a nominal charge. The room is spacious with a porch where you have the fabulous view of the lake. The only problem we had was a minor A/C leak but it didn't bother us much. The bathrooms are open air and even though it was a little weird at the start, we welcomed it as a good change. The room is furnished with a comfortable double bed, a coffee maker, a spacious wardrobe, flat-screen TV and satellite connection and a fridge. The best part of the stay was the pool which is pretty big and is filled with fresh water every day. No chlorine or irritants and nestled among palm trees which makes it very pleasant for swimming even during the afternoon. However, the pool was only accessible till 7 pm and you cannot take your drinks next to it. The food at The Granary was pretty straight forward, nothing too special there. We read reviews here and took our own liquor with us, and we would recommend the same. The sunset was so romantic and the hammock right outside our room was a nice addition as well. The whole resort was so quiet for the most part adding to the romanticism. In short, this was one of the best weekends we've had in Kerala. We wished we could stay for another day when we were leaving. If you are in Kumarakom, you should definitely check this place out."

Traveler impressions of Kumarakom

More about Kumarakom

Kumarakom is a unique city on Lake Vembanad and leads India’s backwaters tourism industry. The backwaters are a network of lakes and streams that connect the entire region. A fascinating subculture has evolved here, and tourists to the area are shuttled around in long cargo boats that allow them to experience the villages, temples, and churches along the way.

The most evocative accommodations in Kumarakom are the kettuvallum or houseboats which laze along the lakes and maintain a perpetual itinerary of slowly changing sites.

These houseboats are simple, but the experience can be intoxicating. Powered by solar panels and equipped with a captain and cook, they offer an all-inclusive experience. The crew expertly leads passengers to the best places to drop anchor and explore. For many, the highlight is the streamlined simplicity of scheduling a day around the area to do some bird-watching, reading, and watching breathtaking sunsets.

The city’s famous bird sanctuary bustles with activity from November to March, when migratory birds are most active. It's a mesmerizing time to visit Kumarakom.

Between the houseboats and several luxury accommodations, travelers to Kumarakom have several options for exploring this fascinating city.
