Lille is a nice city with many historical buildings esp. Lille Grand Place and great shopping. Grand Place has a Printemps, Galleries Lafayette as well as many small fashion boutiques.
Lille is a handy place to start out on your first visit to France, not a big as Paris. It is also a good place to start or finish a Battlefield Tour.
You can catch a train to other location in France from here, I caught one to Boulogne.
A very nice city center, very flemish-y: a mix of Amsterdam and Paris. The people are said to be the friendliest in France.
Do not miss the waffles at Meer, which where de Gaulle's favorite (de Gaulle was born and raised in this city).
This was our first time at Lille. We went to the Museum (Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille) which was great.
Really recommend to go there. The cathedral was also nice. There were also other sights and markets due to the bad weather we were unable to see them all. Lille is a really small city so couple of days would be enough. The station is really close tot he city center. We went to one of the tourist restaurant called Le Metropole near the square. I would suggest you avoid it. Really bad food and we felt sick after wards. It was also great for shopping. Unfortunately the shops are closed on sunday.
