More about Ubon Ratchathani

Ubon Ratchathani is the name of both the province and the city, located 600 kilometers from Bangkok and sharing a border with Laos and Cambodia. Ubon for short, the city is sometimes referred to as the Emerald Triangle due to its dense forests.

Ubon is rich in Isaan culture – a confluence of Thai, Laotian, and Cambodian cultures. The food of the Isaan region is a favorite all over the country. As one of Thailand's poorer and less developed provinces, Ubon also provides respite from the bigger cities and gives travelers a more complete picture of rural life in Thailand.

For sightseers, Ubon's attractions are mainly related to Buddhism. There are several wats around the city, some of which take up residence in the forest and are popular centers for meditation and vipassana. Wat Ban Na Muang showcases some beautiful craftsmanship with an assembly hall appearing as a boat and an ordination hall shaped like a royal barge. Though Ubon is a relatively small and laidback city, there are some luxury Ubon hotels along the Mekong and the Khongjiam rivers. The city center and national parks host a collection of accommodation options as well.

Activities in Ubon center mainly on the national parks. Hiking and forest trekking are worthwhile pursuits, and Phu Chong Na Yoi National Park is home to waterfalls, mountain trails, rock formations, cliff lookouts, and hot springs. Ubon can be reached by bus from Bangkok or via Ubon Ratchathani Airport.
