“Nice but could be better”
Great location, great concept, beautiful surroundings, needs some improvements. Our second stay here. We chose it again mainly due to a lack of options in the area of a similar standard. This time our experience was better than our first stay, but there are still many improvements that need to be made. Firstly, the rooms. Do NOT stay at the “deluxe” double or twin rooms! They are not deluxe at all. They are cheaper but very small, not nicely laid out and with very thin walls. The villas, on the other hand, are very nice! Some issues with the bathroom - the rain shower is not connected and there is not enough hot water for 2 consecutive showers or to fill the large and inviting-looking bathtub. Overall the room was clean, tidy, comfortable, well designed and good value for money. Secondly, the grounds - they are beautiful and impeccably kept. In fact, the whole hotel is a nicely designed oasis in Bedugul and we have found nothing nicer after many visits to the area. Thirdly, the food - it is ok, but nothing special. Reasonably priced, but quality could be better. The breakfast is average. Sometimes a la carte and sometimes buffet. The a la carte was ok with several western and local choices, but get there early or some items are “sold out”. The buffet was not good - only local options, no western food except for cereals and toast. The self-service toaster is a grill/microwave which takes too long to toast the bread and there were no knives available to spread butter and jam - we had to request them! The service was attentive, but we found the staff often didn’t understand our requests and were not proactive. The breakfast knives were one example, salt and pepper were another. We had to ask for salt and pepper for the a la carte breakfast and it finally arrived in small bowls which made it difficult to dispense. Simple salt and pepper shakers at each table might be an easy solution! We went to the outdoor bar/lounge area at 5.15pm for our welcome drinks and found ourselves alone - by 5.30pm there were still no staff on duty and I had to walk to reception to find someone to serve us. Generally there appeared to be a lack of management in the F+B area. Lastly, the staff themselves were courteous and pleasant but seemed lacking in training to deal with certain things. For example, the in-room telephones are rather difficult to use and this was not explained at check-in. Maybe a simple written guide next to the phones would solve this problem as the distance from some of the rooms and reception can be a bit of a hike, and very inconvenient, especially in inclement weather. All in all we enjoyed our stay but found ourselves wishing these needed improvements were recognised and dealt with by management. We do recommend this hotel and will be back again, but we sincerely hope these issues can be resolved to ensure that all aspects of the guest experience match the beautiful surroundings.
