Guests had a comfortable and authentic traditional Japanese experience staying in a Japanese townhouse. The property is located in a great location, just a short walk from the Higashiyama Subway Station, the Gion district, and other attractions. The staff is excellent and friendly, ensuring a memorable stay.

Some guests mentioned that the toilets are located outside and on the main floor. A few guests felt that the cleanliness could be improved, especially in the toilet and bed area.

    “Not highly recommended.”

First of all, I felt an unfriendly atmosphere even before checking in, and then something unbelievable happened. As mentioned in P1, when sending messages before checking in, it is necessary to emphasize that the trouble caused to the homestay is due to the pneumonia in China. I wonder what the landlord's reaction would be if he carefully looked up the relevant information and found out that the novel coronavirus did not originate from China but from another country (I won't name which country here, otherwise I would become like the landlord and be disrespectful to others). Secondly, the facilities and handling methods for dealing with emergencies were very poor. Even though we had a companion who was good at Japanese, we didn't find envelopes with our names in the mailbox on the day we arrived (twice, once at noon and once in the evening) despite being sure that we didn't go to the wrong place. We had to call the landlord twice, and the problem was solved slowly (during which time we were constantly wondering if we had gone to the wrong place, etc.). Otherwise, we would have had to sleep on the street. After communicating with other netizens who had stayed at this homestay before, I found out that this homestay had also been unfriendly to Chinese people before, saying things like they don't welcome Chinese people who don't speak other languages. Although the price-performance ratio is relatively high, the hotel environment is just so-so. Moreover, it was the first time I encountered such an impolite store in Kyoto. If it's because you had some unpleasant experiences before, I hope you don't project your negative emotions onto others. Such behavior is very stingy and makes people speechless. It would also deter people from any other country from staying at this hotel.

“A century-old house within strolling distance of Gion? Who could resist?”

It may depend partly on the room you get — they have five in the home, all different — but staying in this house is quite an experience, and it was probably the one we will recall with the most fondness. Only one shower, but it is large and easy to use. Two toilets, but they are kept clean. The kind of peculiar layout you might expect when a century-old private dwelling is adapted into a hostel, but it offers a genuine look into Japan’s past that you are unlikely to get anywhere else. Not easy to find (it opens into a shopping arcade) but you step into a unique experience which is within walking distance if Gion to the south and the Philosopher’s Walk in the north, two of the must-see areas in Kyoto, which is growing so fast that it risks becoming just another large Japanese city (thankfully, Nara is only forty-five minutes away).. my advice: try it, and ask for room 1201.

“if U like to experience living in a 100years old vintage style Japanese house”

We would recommend if U like to experience living in a 100years old vintage style Japanese house... N the location just next to the subway n 15mins away from the Gion district Due to the wooden structure, you hear every movement from upstairs or the staircase, going up n down, literally U would hear the next door guests too due to the very thin "paper" wall... There is only one shower, and two toilets in the little courtyard... everything was kept as clean as possible and staff seemed to be nice, we only saw them coincidentally sitting there... You get your key in a box and have no room service, so you barely see anyone, U were all left by Urself but it is cleaned and trash is taken out daily.... They do provide limited porridge on some mornings thou... The only hassle is to go up n down to the toilet, esp in the middle of the night...

    “Traditional Japanese-style room”

It's a nice place to stay. I really like it because there’s no need to communicate with the staff. They provide a detailed paper that recommends everything, and you can store your bags if you arrive before check-in time. It's not suitable for people who dislike noise, like the sound of footsteps, because the place is made of wood, so there will be noise when walking. I stayed on the second floor; the air conditioning wasn't very cool, but it was really cold in the morning. There are separate bathrooms for men and women, and one shared shower room with hot water. However, the price doesn't match what you get. You have to buy your own toothbrush and towels, and I was charged an extra 800 yen for something I don't know. But it's okay, I like this place and will come back next time.

“Very clean, great location, great price”

Tatami mat rooms were very nice, don’t let the low cost dissuade you, this is a small but incredibly valuable hostel. Check in was a tad confusing at first, but if you arrive after 4 they should have a paper for you in the box by the door with all the instructions. We were able to check in a little earlier because the host was there around 1 doing some cleaning. They are not always at the desk however. Definitely recommend this place if you want to stay near Gion.
