Beautiful location away from it all”
Yunishigawa is in a pretty remote area but the scenery is exquisite. This ryokan is really traditional and has a really authentic feel of old Japan. The onsen is larger than others I’ve been in Nikko and the outdoor one is nicely perched next to the river. Dinner in the shared dining area was a little disorganised and the courses took a long time to be served but it was much improved when we had it in the private dining area. We would like to commend Minami-san for being kind and helpful throughout our stay as we were not great with our Japanese. She definitely made our stay a memorable one.

Magical!”
We are so happy to have made this special trip to Honke Bankyu. We went in early December 2019 and what a treat! The food is amazing, the place has history and the area is relaxing. You must experience for yourself.

One of the best ryokan. Amazing experience”
I have experienced ryokans in several places and so far Honke Bankyu has been one of the best. Staff is friendly and can speak English fairly ok. A few points is that the location is very far, abt 3 hrs from Asakusa station to the hotel. The last bus is abt 6pm so be careful. Also, the private bath charges extra ¥1080 per person for 45min but they dont have facial cleanser, body cream and other stuffs as they have in the public bath. However, overall, its still very nice to experience onsen and ryokan at Honke bankyu. You will be amazed by the view.

Great experience ”
For first time travellers to a ryokan like us, this was a great stay. If time allows it, I highly recommend those who are interested in staying at the ryokan to stay there at least 2 nights. We stayed there for 1 night only, and I honestly feel that it’s a bit too short, we arrived at the ryokan around 5pm, after dinner and hot spring it’s already time to sleep. Check out its right after breakfast the next day at 10 am. As such I would recommend a 2 nights stay at the ryokan for those city dwellers who want to experience a complete winding down experience. there isn’t much around the vicinity of the ryokan, however this can be a plus for those who want a very peaceful environment. The ryokan interior is awesome, very traditional, it gives off a sense of travelling back in time to the era of samurai. The food is excellent, though it’s not of the highest Kaiseki quality, and there’s more food for 1 person to consume, by the end of the course dinner pretty much everyone in our group felt very full. The buffet breakfast is excellent too in terms of spread and food quality. Take note that all food served at the ryokan were traditional Japanese food. The private onsen (to be reserved in advance, 45 minutes per session) was superb as well, mainly becoz of the river view, there are 3 private onsen that guests are allowed to choose from. To be honest, we booked this ryokan becoz we were captivated by the photos of the onsen overlooking the river. Our room was beautiful, and there’s a massage chair in it which were a surprise to all of us. The staffs will lay out the futons while guests were having dinner, and the next morning while the guests were having breakfast the futons will be stored neatly by the staffs back into the closet , they gave out some sort of ninja vibe due to the way the discreet manner they function in laying out and storing the futons. I am not sure if other ryokan do the same thing as this is our first ryokan experience. Of course the p

Amazing place, I haven't been impressed for a while”
If you look at my reviews I am not easy to please. LOL but Honke Bankyu is just great. The atmosphere, the decorations, the mood, top notch food and amount. Price is a little on the high side but compared to other Ryokan it is cheap. Location is a bit tough to get to. We drove but it was worth it. Staff were nice but had difficulties communicating in English like every other Ryokans. Room were spacious and nice. Facilities are very good. I love it.

Fantastic Japanese Style Ryokan!”
Journey to Honke Bankyu Hotel was difficult and the last bus to the hotel depart at 5:45pm. If you miss this last bus, you'll have to take a taxi. Staff was polite and friendly, briefly introduce about the hotel and welcome us into our room. Private onsen are available for couple who wanna have their own time together at affordable rate. Food served was excellent! Room is clean and beautiful. Will definitely wish to revisit them again in the future. Not really advisable for traveller with big luggages.

Perfect ryokan experience”
We had the best stay at Honke Bankyo. The ryokan is situated in a small town deep in the mountains so it was quite a long journey to get there. The scenery along the way was beautiful so it made the trip very enjoyable. The staff at the ryokan were all very welcoming and helpful. Our room was on the top floor and had an amazing view overlooking the river and the suspension bridge. The room itself was very spacious and beautifully set out. Dinner and breakfast were both wonderful. I particularly enjoyed dinner, which was one of the best dining experiences I had during my trip. While we were out at dinner, the staff had prepared our futon beds and left us drinking water, which I thought was very thoughtful. The private onsen, which you can book when you check in was a great way to wind down at the end of the night. All in all, we loved our stay at Honke Bankyo and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Amazing experience”
It was an amazing experience to stay in Honke Bankyu. We took 3 hours from Tokyo to reach the hotel, but it is worth the traveling. The town in winter time is covered with thick snow and offer superb view. The hotel staffs are great and helpful, the only downside is that they generally can't speak English. We also the private outdoor onsen in the snowing night. Real gem!

Great ryokan for authentic Japanese experience”
Off the beaten track but worth the effort to get there. Old ryokan building, hot spring and atmospheric dinner makes it a great Japanese experience I'd recommend to anyone. Unlike some of the other reviewers I thought the dinner was good, perhaps not 5-star quality, but still good. Overall a little pricey perhaps, but not by Japanese standards and for what you get. Staff very friendly and helpful.

We were amazed and delighted by Honke Bankyu. They were extremely accommodating in all respects, in particular to our request for vegetarian food. The food & presentation of our 3 dinners was incredible, each night different & creative. A marvelous place.

Fun and worth the visit. It's tucked away in a far away location but is totally accessible by timely and available transportation. Pricing is reasonable and the springs were amazing.

A gem in the outskirts of Nikko”
One of the best weekends I've had so far traveling outside of Tokyo! The ryokan is off the beaten path in a very quiet village. Great place to renew the soul and the spirit. Loved the service, the food and their Onsens especially the private ones

Great food, great onsen but...”
The hotel is rustic which is great, we didn't expect it to be modern, but we did expect it to be clean. There was mould on the bathroom walls and on complimentary bottled of lotion. The dining experience was amazing and the private Onsen fantastic but there is literally nothing else to do in town and it's a long way from Nikko
