Best Japanese breakfast ever. Authentic experience”

The staff, especially floor manager, could not have been more friendly and accomodating. The ofuro (baths), both public and private, were lovely, especially the outdoor ones. The breakfast - WOW!

Hotel Tsubakino is near the station at Yudanaka. Charming inside and out. Impeccably clean, with wonderful flower arrangements, and staff who were discreet but incredibly friendly and helpful when needed. We arrived on a lunchtime train from Tokyo, and were able to store our luggage with the hotel while we went off to see the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani (a short bus ride away). Prior to dinner we had used the public and private baths in the hotel, and especially enjoyed sitting outside looking out to the snow-capped mountains. We dressed in the yukata and geta they provided, and we all clip clopped up the street to the restaurant. Our rooms slept 4, and were tatami with futons. Both rooms were very large, with shower and separate toilet. Lots of extra bedding was supplied in case you needed more padding, but we had 2 futons each, so very soft. For breakfast we had a private room for the 8 of us, tatami with a cavity under the table for dangling your legs. THE MOST DIVINE Japanese breakfast ever!! Our friends had the Western breakfast, and that too, was amazing. Our main regret was that we had not stayed there for dinner also the night before, as the food looked incredible, and we would have been more comfortable, and smoke free (many restaurants allow smoking in Japan. A complete turn off!) We checked out at 11, and stored our luggage whilst we walked to Shibu Onsen via the great Kannon statue( a pretty walk up behind the town through some woods. We were able to purchase some very lovely gifts in their little shop, and get a cup of coffee before catching the local train back to Nagano. Would definitely return, perhaps even to ski at Shiga Kogen. We are keen to try their dinner menu also! We thought the town of Yudanaka would look much better once the blossom has started in mid April - it was still a little bare and folorn looking in early April. A really fun and AUTHENTIC Japanese experience. Highly recommended.

Very Relaxing”

Fantastic Onsens, Proximity to Jigokudani, Lovely View

My friend and I stayed at Hotel Tsubakino for two nights. We were looking for a place to relax in an onsen and enjoy the snowy weather. Hotel Tsubakino was a perfect choice. The hotel is a 2 min walk from Yudanaka station which is incredibly convenient for travelers wanting to go see the snow monkeys. The staff was attentive and friendly. They were able to direct us to a charming izakaya down the street for dinner which was super reasonable and had photo menus and an English speaking chef (always helpful even though my friend and I speak Japanese). The room was very nice - nothing special but exactly what you'd expect from an older ryokan. However, the onsens were FANTASTIC. The ladies baths had a massive indoor bath, a medium sized rotenburo (outside bath) and two smaller tubs outside. It was very luxurious sitting in the spa with the snow falling on us. For shy guests or couples, there is a rooftop onsen that can be reserved by the hour - a really nice touch. Our stay included breakfast and we were able to chose western food. It was a rather odd meal, as western style breakfasts in Japan usually are, but there was plenty of food and it was tasty so we were very pleased. Overall it was a perfect stay, I'd definitely recommend this hotel. P.S. There's also a Lawson within a few min walk, for snacks, alcohol, $, etc.

Beautiful ryokan, wonderful staff and facilities ”

Tsubakino is a beautiful modern ryokan in yudanaka. The location, only two minutes from the train station, was perfect. The staff were wonderful and attentive and the room and facilities were excellent. It was my first time staying in a ryokan and I would definitely come back again.

Amazing & cozy stay”

Service was good and the staff always tried their best to accommodate to our requests. Upon arrival, the kotatsu was already warm & ready to use- very thoughtful gesture in cold winter. Room was very clean and comfortable & well equipped! The food quality was excellent and i'd definitely recommend to give the Jap bfast & kaiseki dinner a try! Location was 3 min walk to Yudanaka station, very convenient. Easy access to monkey park & ski resorts from yudanaka stn. Only minus point was our room toilet bowl had a very foul smell, & there was sometimes sewage smell at the hotel corridors. Overall would still recommend this hotel!

Lovely modern ryokan”

Private outdoor bath was great

this hotel is quite close to yudanaka station (5 minutes walk) but it seems far on a dark winter's night. the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. our room had a great view of the surrounding mountains, but this may not be the case for room on the lower floors. the room was very nice, but seemed to smell a little bit when the windows were closed for a while. the huge flat-screen tv was great and didn't get in the way. free wi-fi throughout the hotel was very useful. we were provided with a lot of useful tourist information, which made organising our trip to the nearby snow monkey park and travel after checking out quite easy. the western style breakfast provided was tasty, however the combinations were a bit odd (cornflakes on the salad!). we paid extra to have the japanese dinner (plan a as described on their website). it was varied, delicious and filling. we also used the karoke booth, which was a little bit expensive (charged per hour), but the convenience and privacy made up for that. the private outdoor bath was awesome (may be extra, depending on your package), especially as it was snowing when we were using it. the public indoor bath is free to use anytime, if you don't mind being naked with strangers. the outdoor public bath is not open during winter. we really liked the yukatas (japanese cotton gowns) for wearing around the hotel. we would stay here again and recommend it to others.

Great way to see Jigokudani”

This is really conveniently located just down the hill from the Yudanaka train station, and a 20 minute bus ride from the drop-off point for Jigokudani. There's an onsen on-site (on the roof, oddly enough), with a rentable private onsen as well. The breakfast is a great take on the Japanese interpretation of western (or can be authentic if you're braver than us). The staff were extremely friendly and helpful with helping us navigate the area. All in all, wholeheartedly recommend this place

Superb location, great food, staff, private onsen ! free boots to loan and transport in snow!”

Super good location, few min walk from the Yudanaka station. Friendly staff who will happily offer to drive you and luggages to the station in heavy snow and also, free rental of snow boots for those who need! So needed when the snow fell suddenly and heavily when we went to the snow monkeys park. The breakfast was also much needed and appreciated for the hike at the park. Food was great and filling. Private onsen was also available for booking which was impt to us (: can’t recommend more!

Great for kids!”

Had a great time there. I went with my family (3 year old and 1 year old) and some friends. I can confirm that the sound proofing is great since our friends next door heard none of the crying or screaming we had to deal with. We also had a great time in the Onsen with them. The staff was super accommodating for them too. The staff was pretty solid with English, just be careful about how you ask for things. Be direct and simple and they will bend over backwards for you. Great for post train ride too. We had zero patience for just about anything after our long trip from Tokyo with the kids. The hotel's proximity to the train and the best restaurant in the area (GOEN) was a lifesaver (my kids lives). The hotel was really well configured for kids too. Put both in the bath while we showered next to them. Made things super simple. Breakfasts were super tasty as well.

Private Onsen, Closeness to the Train Station and Good English-Speaking Personnel

the hotel is very near the yadanaka train station, only a few minutes for walk. the guest reception is superb and very warm welcomed. the english-speaking personnel is very hospitable and makes my wife and me feel comfortable. the private onsen is very fantastic for us who don't want to be naked in front of other people. the dinner was a bit too much but great. the spectacular view of the yadanaka town from the room window also makes us stunned with the very much snow cover. it was beyond our expectations, indeed.

Staff was very friendly, he picked us up personally even after 10pm. It was actually when he was on the way home! this place has the best onsen in area because onsen is on 5th floor and u can see the spectacular view, especially when having it outdoor. it also has outdoor private onsen which is perfect for couple!! downside of the hotel is only it is a bit old and thus aircon heater was not working well. some corners of the room need some renovation. location is good as it is located only 3 minutes away from the bus and train station. however this is not city center so need some time to commute. overall this place is recommended!

No bar”

Really great room Japanese style. Closer to the station than you think but directions took us the very long way round. There was no bar in the hotel and they would only serve you food if you booked 24hrs in advance. Great place to eat and drink however directly opposite the train station. The Ongsen in the hotel was good and the staff helpful. We wouldn't however rush back as the lack of food and drink and having to brave all weather to find some was a bit of a pain.

Efficient & friendly ”

The staff are always helpful & try their best to cater our needs., including the transfer & crab meals. The location is excellent. It is very closed to the train station & the convenience store. We will definitely come back again.
