Excellent stay”
This hotel is superb, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It is located in Kinugawa-onsen area which is very close to the Kinugawa-onsen station (walking distant), and the hotel is situated by the river. It is super relaxing here, very tranquil. The rooms were spacious, clean, most enjoyable. Staff are very friendly. The onsen are definitely one of the best, the hotel also provide free parking space. The food is amazing.

Great staff and experience; sorely overpriced”
Here is what I wish I knew before booking Kanaya Kinugawa: Pros: -the staff are the sweetest and go to great lengths to communicate and serve -the food is superb, some of the best we had in Japan. Things we had tried in other restaurants and didn’t enjoy, the restaurant at Kanaya converted us into fans of that dish. Truly everything we ate was beyond delicious. -the views are beautiful. Not breathtaking but beautiful -the open air private onsen is memorable and something worth experiencing for 1 night Cons: -it is FAR. not in Nikko at all (30min train ride away) and 2 hours from Tokyo and it’s not worth it. It is in a deserted resort town. Don’t waste your time in Japan making this trek, you’ll be disappointed. -it is EXPENSIVE. Despite paying $750 USD/night they will upsell everything from beverages to even changing your dinner dish if you don’t like a particular protein. -not all rooms have a private onsen - double check Overall beautiful but value isn’t there

In this lonely location the best choice”
Very traditional and famous Japanese hotel. Everybody very polite, rooms very clean. Food very good. However in this hotel class and this price range I would expect a bigger TV in the room, an in room Bath or at lest a private onsen room even if charged additionally. A coffee machine in the room instead of instant coffee usually standard in this class. Soft drinks and coffee (very good) free in the inviting lobby, however I prefer to drink out of real coffee cups instead of paper cups. But overall when being in Nikko or Kinogawa, the best choice.

Great service, staff spoke some English. Meals were well presented and tasty. We went with the japanese meal at Breakfast which turned out to be hearty and delicious. We greatly appreciate the little touches - with the turn down service, the staff left the room with some light relaxing music playing as well as a little snack. The view from our room (deluxe japanese) was serene and mountainous. It was certainly a relaxing experience and exactly what we had needed following a long and busy day exploring nikko. Kinugawa Onsen Town in comparison was quaint.
