Amalfi is a smaller town than the more popular Positano and Sorrento and as such provides a less bustly experience than the larger towns.
The range of hotels is broad, as it is all along the Amalfi Coast, including hotels in the town centre and hotels up the hill out of the town. The beaches are typical of the surrounding coastline, but the spectacular views right along the coast are worthy of exploring for a few days. Amalfi is a good launch site for day tours to Positano and Capri (Blue Grotto). The bus trip from Sorrento (6 euro, 1 1/2 hours) is the best value entertainment south of Jungfrau.
