Belitung is an island located off the eastern coast of Sumatra. It has always been a beautiful destination, but it was only after a local writer published a novel entitled “Laskar Pelangi” that Belitung was able to gain more international recognition. The novel was successful across borders and turned into a movie in 2008. Once known only for its mining, the island was introduced to the world, showcasing its beautiful beaches and fascinating scenery. Having its
own airport, travelers have easy access to one of Southeast Asia’s most beautiful islands.
Belitung Island is part of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province. It serves as an excellent base for exploring surrounding islands, including the larger Bangka Island and smaller islands like the Lengkuas. Obvious beach activities such as snorkeling and diving can be experienced, but more fascinating aspects of the island create a unique experience. Beachcombing and strolls along the waters edge are simple leisures with distinct granite rock formations gracing the views – some the size of houses and some with short tunnels.
Tanjung Tinggi Beach boasts one of the most scenic granite rock formations and was featured in the Laskar Pelangi movie. The islands history can be studied at the Museum of Belitung, and historic sites include the 18th century Vihara in the Burung Mundi village.
