I really love this old historic town. It saddens me to see the main street business district look a bit shabby with not many signs of vibrant activity.
The old Niagara cafe seems to be on its last legs. I first visited here as a child in the early sixties and there hasn't been much progress since then in the town. The (relatively)new MacDonalds and Hungry Jacks have really had a detrimental effect on the dining opportunities in town as people travelling on the Hume no longer need to detour into town for food. I feel that the State Government should inject funds into these old towns as they provide an interesting wayside stop for travellers. I would love to see the od railway put back into operation as it would provide employment and business opportunities for the town as well as making Gundagai a destination point instead of a wayside stop.Perhaps a rail trail for cyclists from Gundagai to Tumut would be a cheaper option and would spawn businesses such as cafes and cycle shops as well as increasing tourism to the area.
