Best hotels & accommodations in Kandy

I’ve been unhappy with Kandy hotels so far until my stay at Ozo. It’s up the road from the lakefront, and has a lovely relaxed look and feel to it. This is a really beautiful hotel and is even better in reality than in the photos. From arrival, you are looked after so well by the friendly staff who cannot do enough for you. The reception area opens into the bar/lounge area which is open fronted overlooking the lovely pool and river....an amazing vista. The room was very comfortable and quiet with a nice private balcony and well equipped bathroom. The buffet breakfasts and dinners were really good and the presentation of food especially the cold starters, fruit and desserts was just perfection. We had breakfast included but paid extra for the dinners which were fantastic value. We took tuk tuk's from the hotel into kandy a few times which was a very interesting 15 minute trip. In fact the hotel location is great, away from the hustle and bustle of Kandy. Overall a fabulous hotel and from what we could see, the best hotel in Kandy!!

Food was exceptional with a variety of choices. Walking tracks around the mountain leading to the top of Hantana was an excellent experience with picturesque views. Inside the hotel with its grandiose ancient looks and spaciousness surrounded by lush green forest creating a calm peaceful environment for anyone who would know how to enjoy the beauty of nature. Best hotel in Kandy for Kandyan experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed 6 nights in Kandy and our choice of Hotel made our stay VERY special. The facilities, the ambiance, the quality of food, the friendly staff, and the views were SUPER. We also appreciated the Live Entertainment each evening. Being visitors from Australia we enjoyed seeing the Sri Lankan Weddings that were taking place in the Hotel. Our stay in this Hotel truly enhanced our Kandy stay, and we were treated as though we were special. (Which of course we are!) I need to mention that the gift shop in the foyer was really worth visiting as well. The towel animals on our bed are also worth mentioning. There were 4 of us in our group and we would all highly recommend this hotel to our friends.

I will eventually buy a house on the outskirts of Kandy in the hill country where it is even cooler, this is where I went to on this visit! I stayed in the Yala National Park at a fabulous hotel called the Yale Park Hotel. Absolutely amazing place with infinity pools outside all of the rooms. The rooms without exception were all massive and really well thought out. A Chinese guy called Wesley bought the place a few years ago and has invested a fortune in making the place awesome! There are even horses there as well as fish ponds and visits from the local monkeys, a white boar and a white buffalo. The views from every aspect of the hotel were awe-inspiring and memorising! So good to wake up and unpack the entrepreneurial stress with a long distance gaze into the far off mountains! Gods creation at its best and in full affect, you cannot help but to be moved by the view. I will look for an old colonial tea plantation house to renovate rather than a new build! I love the Sri Lankan colonial architecture as it is pretty much intact from the Victorian era from when it was built. Probably cost a small fortune but my philosophy and belief system will take care of the finances! I do believe that when you think of something, write it down, unpack it from though to words and then focus positive energy onto it, the subject matter in mind and on paper will begin to manifest itself into reality, you do have to feed the thought pattern with positive affirmations and a focused belief-energy – knowing it is already real and its only the time-line that has to be traveled to make the initial thought into absolute tangible reality. Please check out my Sri Lanka Blog post: http://www.brianroe.co.uk/sri-lanka/ for pictures of Yale Kandy Park.

Stayed at this Kandy City Hotel for 1 night during a recent holiday trip to Sri Lanka. It is a new hotel and has just been in operations for a few days when we stayed there. Everything is still new and even our room had a fresh smell of paint when we first entered it. Locationwise, it is located at the heart of Kandy City, so it offers close proximity to the lake, the Tooth Relic Temple, Kandy City Center mall, as well as restaurants and supermarkets. I think location is the best thing about this hotel. Breakfast was also very tasty and well prepared, for which we greatly appreciated. In general, accomodation in Sri Lanka is expensive if we compare it with the rest of Asian countries. So, at the rate we were given, I really have nothing serious to complain about this hotel. If I need to mention 1 flaw, I think the bathroom in the room is too small, while it is obvious that the room itself still has a lot of unused space. So, I was wondering why they didn't make the bathroom a little bit bigger than it is now. Also, the drain stinks badly so I think the hotel needs to do something about it immediately.

The best thing however was the SPA. I went twice and had different girls with different programs. They were very well trained, with re right pressure on either the relaxing or the deep tissue. The products they use felt great and smelled nicely. The music in the background and the brand new steam room that reminded me of the European steam rooms that I know made the whole experience very relaxing. A bit in the higher price side, but for those who come to Sri Lanka to relax, this is the place to go. (Tried one Ayurveda one downtown, but it's nothing in comparison to Ceylon SPA in this hotel)

I heard about this place from social media and most of them call it Paradise of honeymooners. While our stay I realized how they deserved that name. This is one of the best hotel and places in Sri Lanka. I think at least you have to visit this place once. About our stay. The road to this place is not that easier, but as we all know difficult roads leads to you into beautiful places. They welcome with us with brilliant Kedondong (Ambearella) juice and it was so refreshing for our ride up into hill. The rooms were excellent and they layered luxurious carpets all around the hotel and improve the hotel appearance. The bathrooms were so good and they are equipped with bathtub, hot water heaters worked well. You can do number of free activities while your stay including tennis, badminton and pool access, should mention this was one of the well maintained and best pools we experienced at a hotel. Also they have cycling, boat ride and pool table but those come with extra charge. They have well maintained golf ground, but don’t know whether it was free or comes with cost as we didn’t play golf. About the place and garden, it was like heaven in earth (you will see beautiful captures from my photographs). Staff at this place were exceptional, they were really helpful and respecting to there clients. We really enjoyed the foods they made and they were mouthwatering. You can get anything you like they have wide range of verities of food options. At last as improvements the air condition units controllers were bit old and they seems out of control. That was the only thing we have seen as negative, other than that this hotel is amazing peacful place to enjoy your holidays with beautiful seeneries, joyful activities and lovely staff. Appreciate your great service Amaya Hunnas Falls.

my partner and i stayed here for 5 nights. we wanted to be away from city life of kandy; we made the right choice - the hotel’s location is exquisite. our driver did an excellent job in locating it – not particularly easy but, if you make sure you have elegant’s telephone number, he can call them for directions. the rooms are spacious clean and comfortable. we opted for one without ac and a private balcony. the views are utterly stunning with tropical green mountains in all directions. standing on the upper veranda, we felt like we were in the forest canopy listening to an orchestra birds. a lot of love has gone into this business. the building is modern and maintained very well. the staf were friendly and attentive without being over bearing. they just leave you to get on with it if thats what you want. the owner, has been in the hotelier business for over 10 years and his hotel reflects the very best that he has learned. the service, his employees and the hotel was the best we saw in sri lanka. they can also organise professional drivers to take you anywhere you like. our main driver, charminda, was a very careful (a rarity in sri lanka), considerate and thoughtful character. we very much appreciated him looking after us when it was needed it. over all we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely come again next time were in the country. the only thing i would suggest would be a more varied menu for vegetarians.

We had wonderful time at Swiss Residence Kandy. Peaceful place and easy access to the hotel and very short distance to Kandy city. The parking is good and security guards are helpful to park vehicles. Welcoming is good with welcome drink. The room quality is excellent and way better than we expected. Doorbell and door access panel of hotel room is modern and love the way they arranged bathroom and toilet separately. Bathroom well cleaned, and quality bathware use. The hotel staff professional and helpful. The view we get from the hotel was excellent. Day time, and night time both were amazing. The room quality, bed, air conditioning unit all were perfect. We only had the breakfast from hotel and really enjoyed the meal, buffet included all craving food options including English breakfast and Sri Lanka meals. The hotel swimming pool is well maintained and clean, the place that pool located also great. At last this is underrated but one of the best hotels in Kandy to me. Only concern you should remember, there is sudden steep hill while accessing to the hotel and better you put sport mode/ power mode of your vehicle when you near hotel.

We stayed at Mt. Havana for four days and it was the last stop of our first visit to Sri Lanka. For anyone who would like to have a break from any kind of noise, city stress, etc. we can definitely recommend this extraordinary villa boutique hotel. Our stay was as a family with two children (7 and 3 years old) and despite the quite location the kids had tremendous fun exploring the huge gardens with all the fresh fuit(Mango, Jak, Starfruit, etc.) and just liked the fact that there was pure nature around with squirrels, monkeys or just a cow happy to be fed by them during a morning walk. So for us, living in Shanghai it was exactly what we needed. Regarding service we were in the comfortable situation of being the only guests in an already small establishment (only 5 rooms in total). So after all we were perfectly being looked after by Mr. Soranga and is team in an almost colonial and somewhat decadent feeling, each time we pressed the "butler bell" whenever we needed something or just to tell the staff an what time we wanted to have dinner or breakfast the other morning. Food was delicious in large portions and definitely worth the price. It should be mentioned that when choosing Mt. Havana principally the guests depend on the catering on site since there is not much restaurants or other outside dining places in reach. However, given the quality of the food and fruits/vegetables coming from their own gardens this is not a disadvantage at all. To summarize we have no negative points to tell for this stay. At last, the hidden location does not mean an overall disadvantage for further exploring the Kandy area and upper hill country regions such as Nuria Elya, etc. Mt. Havana in this way is even located pretty much between all these locations and day or half-day trips by car can be organized very well.

It is a typical four-star hotel, big and popular with tour groups. The service is good, as is the breakfast and dinner buffet (catering for western and sri lankan tastes). The WLAN is shaky (the hotel claims that it's better than in most places in Sri Lanka. Which doesn't make it less shaky). We found the staff professional and friendly, the lower in the hierarchy the friendlier. Location is good, in that one can walk to the city center and is fairly quiet. But be aware that walking takes 20 minutes. Tuk-tuks are neither faster nor more comfortable because traffic in Kandy is horrible. Our large room was on the fifth floor and had a balcony with a view over the lake. On several days, we had no warm water in the morning. Apparently too many people had showered before us - no such problems in the afternoon or evening.

From the moment we entered we were greeted with a warm welcome and juice. The room was big and very clean, facing the pool. The staff are so good and friendly that I would want to stay here again. We travelled as a couple and had a wonderful, relaxing time. We were met by Mr Sunny at the train station in Kandy as pre-arranged with the hotel. The ride to the hotel was a bit arduous as we had not expected the narrow, bumpy roads cum dirt tracks and it was by car and tuk tuk. Our first evening meal was a bit of a disappointment as I now realise that we arrived late and were probably the last people to order and that the kitchen had perhaps already closed. The soup was lukewarm and so was the curry. Staff bent over backwards to compensate for this failing by offering a breakfast of our choice for the next morning. There was a fair choice of meals at breakfast, lunch and dinner. Plenty of fruits at breakfast, a selection of dessert at dinner. Delicious Sri Lankan curries. The accommodation in the tent/lodge was very comfortable. Plentiful hot water and powerful shower. Comfortable beds with duvet which kept us warm during the night. Strong winds at night - Bring your ear plugs if you are a light sleeper! Do bring at least a cardigan for the evenings as it gets very droughty and cold in the dining terrace. Beautiful scenery all round. We tried the spa on our last day which was good and had such a beautiful view. We opted for a tea picking talk one day and went amongst the tea-pickers which was very informative. All the staff are extremely polite and friendly. Perhaps a "fine-tuning" is needed - they need to be consistent with what they do but perhaps that is what the charm is about staying in Sri Lanka at a tea station. All in all, we would come again and would thoroughly recommend this beautiful place in this part of the world.

We really enjoyed our stay here in Kandy and a part of this was staying at 360 View. Its clean, homely and welcoming. Newly built and all facilities are top class! We would definitely stay here again if we return to Kandy. The roof top pool and observation deck are just the icing on the cake!!

Our first night in Sri Lanka was spent at this little hotel on the hill...a totally unassuming enterprise, until you wake up in the morning and hear the birds outside, open the balcony doors and you are struck by an awesome view of the Mahawali river meandering down below, against the green lush backdrop of the opposing forest. On the river, slowly moving fishing boats and the peaceful lull of soulful lonely flute playing. The view is peaceful and restful for the soul. The rooms were clean and well equipped - bar fridge, kettle, toiletries, clean towels and clean warm bedding and a super large comfortable bed. Air-conditioning that worked and above all a large shower with hot water. There are no decorations in the rooms but you definitely do not need it when you have an awesome view of the river! Staff were always available to assist and the front desk staff were pleasant and helpful. Special thanks to Dennis and his team for making our stay in Kandy such a pleasant and memorable one. Hotel is well located to Kandy central and temples. They even kept our luggage for free over three nights while we toured to Pinnawala and Sigiriya. Breakfast was excellent and restaurant staff were always willing to explain the different local dishes on the menu. Do not expect Italian coffees or any other coffee other than proudly produced Sri Lankan coffees - the Sri Lankans are proud of their home brews! A friendly bunch and in true spirit of Sri Lankan hospitality they ensure you experience Sri Lanka in its truest form...Thank you Emerald Hill Hotel for making our stay so memorable and for accommodating all our wishes and requirements, we wish you all the best and wish your hotel grows from strength to strength. Highly recommend Emerald Hill Hotel for your stay in Kandy! From Proudly South Africa!

Staff was friendly and helped us book train tickets. The location is only a 5-10 minute tuk tuk ride into town. There is a good Chinese restaurant (Slightly Chilled) with happy hour and balcony with lake view about a 10-15 minute walk away. We didn't have the hotel breakfast so can't comment on the food, but would highly recommend Viyana Boutique.

The room was beautiful and clean (again incredible views) the staff were outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. They even picked us up from Kandy train and took us on a tour to an elephant sanctuary at a far cheaper rate than any of the local tour operators. Can't think of any single bad thing about this place, a real gem, highly recommended.

The staff were by far our favorite of all that we met in Sri Lanka, and were super helpful when sourcing our train tickets to Ella, as well as helping us with a driver to be our tour guide! The food was amazing, from Delicious breakfast served in the stunning gardens at sunrise, to curries in the evening in the restaurant. We stayed in one of the cabins, which i would highly reccomend over the main house rooms- they were very high spec, and clean and right in the jungle with all the noises and trees looming over us! we totally loved it and will be going back!

Staying at the Samadhi Centre was a truly memorable feature of our time in Sri Lanka. The location means you have to do a bit of driving to see the sights in the Kandy area, but it is worth it for the feeling of true escapism each afternoon when you return along the windy road, to the cool, shady, tranquility of Samadhi. Travelling with small children meant we had to keep a very careful eye on them along some of the windy narrow paths around the hotel and they didn't fit in well with the meal times or food on offer, but the staff were wonderfully accommodating and had special meals prepared in advance of the evening buffet, and were very patient and kind to our children. The food was amazing - some of the best we had in Sri Lanka.

I stayed at the Queen's hotel in Kandy in July 2012 before the Perahela Festival. The hotel is an old colonial heritage, with quite charming old-school decorations. Rooms are old but very clean and carefully tended. The service is friendly. The restaurant provides local as well as international cuisine at a value price. The location is very convenient for Kandy tour, just in the north western end of the Kandy lake. Besides there is also a shop providing high quality Sri Lankan souvenirs and tea (you have to get out of the gate and turn right, 50m). One of the drawbacks is guests might be waken up by the 6am temple chanting by the loudspeaker on the road around the lake.

Room is super-practical and has a perfect size. Bathroom was well organized. Everything was at the right place. First thing we saw was swimming pool. Even though it was very late we could swim and enjoy evening in the backyard. It was great. The place was so nice and comfortable and friendly, we regretted staying there for only one night. Each room has a unique name. Even shower gel smells amazing in there ;) The breakfast was same as in other places. We could ask for eggs or a toast and it was prepared for us. Fresh fruits, juice, coffee/tea, eggs, white toast-bread, sausages (taste awful everywhere on Sri Lanka ;) and jam. In general, Sri Lankas’ breakfasts are not impressive :) We definitely recommend! Stuff was very nice and friendly.

we stayed in theva residency for 2 nights in the middle of june and it proved to be the best bit of our very short sri lanka vacation. we had airport transfers arranged with the hotel directly (at rs 10k each way) - it seems to be above the 'market rate' but it was a safe bet as the private chauffeurs may not be familiar with the hotel location. it's a flat 3 hour drive from cmb to kandy, single lane dual carriageway and absolutely chaotic! after a long journey we were pleased to be welcomed by the staff at theva, all smiles and ready with refreshments. we were shown to our room which is one floor below the lobby - it was lush compared to what you would find otherwise in kandy. some notes on the room and theva: 1. outdoor bath - because it was very windy, it was almost impossible to fill the bath which had a fixed shower head (as opposed to a tap) 2. we could hear every thing that is going on in the corridor so sound proofing is not the best - but i reckon it is only our room that has this issue. 3. wifi didnt work on our floor but works on every other floors 4. very relaxing and chilled location, it wasn't busy either so we have the infinity pool to ourselves and sometimes the whole restaurant! 5. best food eaten in kandy, definitely compliments to the chef! 6. soft and clean sheets, hot water, tv.. almost everything you need. only that the safe provided is not fixed to the wardrobe so it can be moved! we left valuables in the safe nonetheless and nothing was taken. overall a very pleasant stay and definitely the place to go if you are not going to rough it out and just want to take it slowly!

We booked here for a night after an awful night in a hostel on the other side of town and it's the best decision we made! The owner is so friendly and had a long conversation with us about what we wanted to do and gave us amazing advice. The owner is Sri Lankan but lived in Australia for 7 years so understood what westerners and locals wanted which always helps. We asked about sapphires and he got us a driver (free of charge) to take us to recommended jewellery stores that also gave us cheap prices compared to others simply because we knew the hotel owner. The hotel itself is a really nice hotel with all the facilities you need. It's clean and the staff go above and beyond their duties to make you feel welcome. We were disappointed we only had one night here, we'd definitely come back if we stayed in Kandy again. The breakfast is amazing as well! If your looking for a hotel, look no further... this place is a steal at the prices they charge!!!
Cheapest hotels in Kandy

The hotel is absolutely clean, maintained and well managed. staff are friendly and helpfull. The location is slightly off the main road but that is exactly what I needed. The owner of the hotel is a wonderful person - I lost the key of the room and he would not accept from me any compensation for the key... Truly Srilankan hospitality.

I was very happy about staying here. I just booked one night but extended to two nights. It has a great placement, not in the middle of Kandy, but it only takes 10-15 minutes (a bit up the hill - but that just counts as a nice little butt-workout. Or else the tuk-tuk drivers will happily bring you there!) and then you would be in the middle of the city or back at the ...

For the price it is definitely good value and the host, Prabath, is so nice and will literally do everything for you, and help will what you need help for! There is a nice little terrace seated on the back of the house, where you can enjoy a little jungle-alike kind of look! So again, if you’re looking for a cheaper solution close to the center, this is definitely recommendable! :-) Thank you very much for a lovely stay!

Had fun reading the graffiti left by fellow traveler which has a lot of positive comments on this place (plus politics, jokes, memes, etc.). My only complain is the bed is a bit too thin for my aching back, they should consider changing them soon. No air conditioner but I do not have problem sleeping since Kandy is at higher altitude and is cool at night.

A travel friend told me about this place & I am so thankful that they shared the knowledge! The staff are super friendly & helpful, it is soo clean, walking distance to supermarkets, ATM or restaurants. Wifi was strong and there is a big kitchen with everything you need if you want to cook. I stayed longer than I was going to because it was so great!

They also serve u with amazing breakfast. I stayed for three nights with them and everyday they would serve me with deilicious breakfast. I wish I could stay there for a month so that I could try all the Sri Lanka food. I had my birthday on the day I arrived at their hostel and they gave me a surprise on that day. They also cooked BBQ for the guests. It tasted very nice. They also have a bakery which they don't share about much with the guests. But do ask them for it, because everything is made fresh and tastes very good. I would highly recommend this place. I am sure nobody will regret staying at this place.
Located a 30 minute walk from the train/bus station it was nice to get away from the noise of Kandy. The owner is awesome - friendly and honest, views are spectacular and the dorm is a steal for budget travelers. I actually considered leaving after 1 night because I thought it was a bit far from the city but quickly realized this was a blessing in disguise.

Bus station nearby.(5 minutes walk). Train station 10 minutes walk. All shops, restaurants, tempke, museum, commercial center, walking distance. The staff and the owner are very kind. This is an old colonial house, very nice and clean . Nice atmosphere. I recommand.

Didnt have high expectations of this hotel. Boy is this place underrated. Safe to say the best hotel we stayed at in Sri Lanka. Staff were super friendly and accommodating, the manager was really great to speak to, enthusiastic about great service so he commands his staff around and gets stuck in himself. Gave us some great cooking tips too! Pool is smallish but really clean. We did a tour of Kandy with a guy the hotel has used for years. We saw some great sights and were left to decide what we did and didnt do. We even paid him twice the amount we should have by accident and he came back to give us the money. Unreal. Kandy is a noisy, busy place so to stay 5 mins from the lake is well advised. Unless you want to sleep with cars honking and people shouting all night. stay here.

Restaurants are quite a ways off, so if you want to eat at the house, make sure you do a take out. Alternatively, the grocery is about a 5-minute walk, so you can buy food and use the kitchen to cook. The house is very spacious and very clean too. The rooms are comfortable and you can choose the room with the balcony overlooking the Mahaweli River if it's free. Vikram, the manager, is very accommodating and he helps you go around the city. If you have any questions or need any help, just ask him and he'll go the extra mile to answer you. The breakfast that he prepares every morning is very good too! We'd definitely book this house again in the future.

And the atmosphere of the hostel just made people feel at home , so comfortable and relaxed. That's Probably the most important reason that I stayed there for 3 nights. Especially the boss Manoj is suuuuuper helpful , friendly. He Gave me a lot of good advice about my rest 13 days traveling in Sri Lanka . And even I arrived at another city and stayed at another hostel , when I met some problems , he's always helpful. And I also Wish he'll recover soon and hope when I see him next time , his leg is totally fine . For sure, if you wanna a super stay and get a lot of useful traveling information in Sri Lanka , definitely The Best Hostel will be your NO 1 Choice. ( Used Agoda so many times and this is my first time to write the review for one hostel . Then you can see How much I love this place and How good impression I had on this Hostel 💓 )

I came for 3 days and have spent another 5... And I am not here for the last time. Excellent place especially for a photographer, close to the centre of Kandy (7 minutes by public bus) and kind and helpful family. In fact is a homestay... Highly recommended!

Overall, it was a good stay and I would recommend this place. We booked a double room with private bathroom but it wasn't private at all and there wasn't any hot water in that bathroom. The only hot showers are located behind the kitchen. So if you are a couple and you want some privacy, you may want to choose another place to stay. It didn't bother us that much but I...

The only hot showers are located behind the kitchen. So if you are a couple and you want some privacy, you may want to choose another place to stay. It didn't bother us that much but I can imagine some people could be a bit disappointed. Also, I did see a cockroach in the kitchen on one of the counter tops, it's probably mainly because different people leave their food on the shelves rather than in the fridge but hey: it's Asia. Even in 5 start hotels you can see them! Now good things: girls running the hostel are friendly although they have not been there for long and they may not necessarily give you the best info. For example we asked for a price of taxi or private car to go to Sigiriya and Dambulla and the price they told us was way much higher to what we've paid. I would probably suggest to go into town and ask around. They also try to organise some social evenings which is always a good thing. In my opinion, the location is good. It's close to the lake and it's a bit on a hill which I found very good. Kandy town centre is very busy and smoggy! Hostel is clean, you can do your washing (you have to pay for it) and the break-out area is pretty cool (inside and outside). It's good value for money and I would probably stay in this place again, although I must say Kandy was my least favorite place in Sri Lanka.

That is likely what you get when you have an actual mother as the host. As a single travelling women with backpack - the most important thing for me was a safe and comfortable space. Ginza rest surpassed the expectations above. It almost felt like I've known the family from before, they treated me like a daughter visiting from abroad. if you are looking for a kind and local host (mind you - super clean and large room, feels safe and at home). then Ginza rest is where you should book. it located slightly away from city center, away from the busy Kandy town - but you'll appreciate that it's away from the mad rush in the city center :)

You can see the monkeys swinging in trees and bouncing off rooftops in the mornings and in the evenings watch flocks of birds fly overhead. Extremely clean room and facilities. Slept like a baby in our firm, comfortable bed and a fan that works so well I had to drop it down to 1. Really helpful and friendly staff who made us feel like we were at home. The bar/restaurant is a great place to catch up with fellow travelers, talk about experiences, and swap tips on your other Sri Lankan destination. Good food, a free pool table, and a beautiful, giant fur baby called Hustler. X. Highly recommend.
Dorm is strange, seems to be in a basement, but is ok for 1 or 2 nights. Location is good, in the city center, near the temple and restaurants. The place might be difficult to find if arrive at night. The owner is amazing. I threw up all night and by the morning he gave and yogurt to get better.
The hostel is clean and the bathroom in good shape. The beds could be a bit more comfortable. The location is not the best but walkable from the railway station and there is a supermarket and some baking shops nearby. The breakfast with 3 slices of toast, omlette and a banana is good enough. All in all good value for money

Comfortable bed, walkable if wanted from the city center otherwise a short trip with tuk-tuk, clean rooms and bathroom although share with quite many others. And breakfast included, which makes it more practical and worth the price! The staff will also help you out regarding plans in Kandy, order taxi, help with directions and recommendations, etcetera.

We went on a tour too with the owner in his Tuktuk he took two of us all the way to Sigiriya and Dambulla and back for 6000rs. A really good price and he added in a few stops on the way too. The place is about a 20 minute walk to Kandy Lake but you can get dropped by Tuktuk for a very cheap price and within 5 minutes. Thank you to Mountain View for a wonderful stay!

Amazing! And thank you so much for the staff and the amazing service.

Overall a fabulous hotel and from what we could see, the best hotel in Kandy!!

my partner and i stayed here for 5 nights. we wanted to be away from city life of kandy; we made the right choice - the hotel’s location is exquisite. our driver did an excellent job in locating it – not particularly easy but, if you make sure you have elegant’s telephone number, he can call them for directions. the rooms are spacious clean and comfortable. we opted for one without ac and a private balcony. the views are utterly stunning with tropical green mountains in all directions. standing on the upper veranda, we felt like we were in the forest canopy listening to an orchestra birds. a lot of love has gone into this business. the building is modern and maintained very well. the staf were friendly and attentive without being over bearing. they just leave you to get on with it if thats what you want. the owner, has been in the hotelier business for over 10 years and his hotel reflects the very best that he has learned. the service, his employees and the hotel was the best we saw in sri lanka. they can also organise professional drivers to take you anywhere you like. our main driver, charminda, was a very careful (a rarity in sri lanka), considerate and thoughtful character. we very much appreciated him looking after us when it was needed it. over all we really enjoyed our stay and will definitely come again next time were in the country. the only thing i would suggest would be a more varied menu for vegetarians.

Best night on Sri Lanka! Very nice hotel. Great design and comfortable furniture. We had best night-sleep over there. The bed was better than at my own house!

It was through Agoda that we found Villa Shenandoah, and based on the previous reviews booked on the spot, as well as the incredible price that was on offer at the time of my booking we were fortunate to secure a nights accommodation. We are almost hesitant to share our experience for fear that we may not be able to secure a future booking when the word quickly spreads about this incredible place! A stunning family run villa, from the warm welcome with a cool refreshing drink (we arrived from a long and dusty 7 hour train trip from Ella to Kandy so that was a wonderful treat!), we were shown our private and beautifully appointed villa and asked if we would like to dine privately on our balcony at a time to suit us. How wonderful and special and very romantic for us, and the food was spectacular - we book chose Sri Lankan cuisine which is one of the highlights of our trip, but could have chosen a variety of other superb dishes such as seafood, or meats with an International flavour. Topped off with a bottle of Australian wine, we had a fantastic night and wished we could have stayed another night, however time did not allow for this. The following morning our charming host personally took us on a tour of Kandy and even indulged our desire to visit the local markets to purchase spices to take home. They organised a driver to take us to Colombo and our farewell from them was as warm as the welcome. We cannot wait to return to Sri Lanka and have more time in Kandy and Villa Shenandoah will be our frist choice.

On the first night I had booked a Duluxe Room with Balcony and the room was perfect, clean, guest amenities and a clean comfortable bed. Very clean bathroom and linen. I had my meals from Room service and the food was perfect. Great taste, quality and quantity were just right. The service staff "Dammika" who brought my meal was very professional with excellent Cutomer Service skills which is rare to find todays hospitality world. I was at the Bar and was served by yet another great staff with excellent cutomer service skills (I coudn't ask for his name) but he was the one behid the cocktail table mixing the cocktails and serving the guests. I ordered Western and Sri Lankan breakfast on each day and the food was great and huge. All staff that I came across with during my stay were great from Housekeeping to the Concierge. The second night I stayed in a Standard room as the hotel was full and yet I receieved a great welcome back and had a very comfortable room. I would definetly recommend to all and would stay at Hotel Suisse on my future visits to Kandy.

Hotel is clean, staff friendly and helpful. Rooms were new looking and nicer than most in Sri Lanka. Hotel location was a little far to walk from the main lake in kandy but a short 5 min or less tuk tuk ride and you're there. In my opinion it's better to not stay right in the middle of the chaos anyway.

Very friendly helpful staff, specially Rajitha at the reception. Clean quiet rooms. Comfy beds. A reasonably good breakfast buffet. More than anything the calm and tranquil surroundings, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. A little advice- Though the GPS will take you there ultimately, it can direct you through narrow scary tiny roads.

The staff made us feel incredibly welcome right from the beginning and could not do enough for us. The room was absolutely beautiful, very clean and stunning views. We did write the names down of the two members of staff but seem to have lost them on our travels .we were two sisters staying here and hired our own tuk-tuk to drive. The chef was absolutely amazing and cooked the best meals we ate all through Sri Lanka. We even ended up booking one more night because we loved it there so much and we really felt at home, despite being the only guests we were always made to feel welcome. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay and we would highly recommend anybody going to Kandy to stay here. Gemma and kelly x

The breakfast they made me was the best I’ve had in my time in Sri Lanka, and the home made passion fruit and mango juice was delicious. Would 100% recommend, and would definitely stay again if I’m Kandy.

Sweet Cinnamon Guest House is a hidden oasis a few miles outside of the bustle of Kandy center. The rooms are elegant and inviting. We stayed the first 5 nights in one of their “simpler” rooms, which we thought was lovely. Upon returning to Kandy and again booking with them, we stayed in a room that blew the first away. The custom bathroom had huge windows that looked out into the jungle. Bird watching from the bath was a rare treat. All rooms have both air-conditioning and ceiling fans. The grounds have tall trees, tropical flowers, herbs and spices that find their way into the delicious meals prepared for breakfast and dinner. Both the patio and library are great places to lounge with a book as you enjoy the sounds of the jungle. Breakfasts are multicourse affairs with tropical fruit, eggs, either pancakes or waffles, fresh squeezed OJ, and either potatoes or sometimes fried onion rings. Dinners (upon request) are traditional Sri Lankan dishes – the best we had during our visit. Both Chalani (owner) and Lawrence are skilled chefs. They cook beautifully presented curries that have layers of flavor and texture. When Lawrence discovered that we were curious about jack fruit , he prepared a special jack fruit curry for us that night. He did the same when we asked about where to find good kottu - sure enough there was what seemed like an endless bowl of hand-cut kottu ready for us the next dinner. We definitely left there a few pounds heavier! I cannot say enough good things about the owners, Chalani and Priyan, and their staff. They are warm, helpful, knowledgeable, available when you want to chat, but also very respectful of your space. Chalani and Priyan have lived many places, so have a keen understanding of both western and Asian cultures. They helped us navigate Sri Lankan cultur

Nature around is magical, on our first breakfast we had a monkeys as a guests. They provide free room for our driver as well. Minus: location is a bit far from Kandy around 50 min - 1 hour drive, but for that price you'll not find anything in Kandy with the same quality, warm atmosphere and beauty. If you are traveling to Nuwara Eliya after, location will be as a plus. No wi-fi.

They offered us three meals a day with meals made up of exciting fusion style choices cooked to perfection by world-class chefs. You can go for nature walks in the day, swim, attend yoga classes or sign up for spa treatments. We opted to sleep early, wake up early to watch the sunrise. The journey up to the secluded spot can be a bit hard but it is all worth the effort. Go and unwind and heal. There's nothing else you want to do.

Great size, tasteful decoration. Air Con in all bedrooms which we were not expecting from a house designed to be open and air flow always present. Bathroom amazing. Biggest bath we have come across. Turn down service in luxurious bed with 4 poster mozzy net quashed any bug woes from house being lovely and open. The house = the whole house for use was simply beautiful. All open and so well designed. It really is like a Palace and plenty of room if it had been at capacity. Staff = Very professional + there but not there. They seem to arrive when needed + always at hand. Food was sublime + small menu delicious and professionally served. Running out of space for this review but what a place + what an experience. We have spoiled ourselves with hotels but this place was a wonderful experience

Lovely resort hotel with stunning views and a clean infinity pool. Almost at the top of a hill so about 15/20 mins tuk tuk from town but this is what you want! We paid for the landscape view and was so worth it, sweeping landscapes and perfect balcony to watch the crazy Sri Lankan weather/night storms/sunsets. Big, clean rooms. Ample staff. Spa and gym on site and their food is good - al la carte better than breakfast buffet though (we ate in a couple of different places in Kandy and found you could pay more for less quality/freshness). On reflection, we did think £80p/n excluding breakfast was abit much though- we were unaware of this so when our first morning generated a £20 bill for 2 omelettes, some cereal and fruit it seemed rather annoying! given the room price I think this could've been included. Would still recommend it though!

Spacious rooms and bath. Bed was comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were buffets. The buffet wasn't very large, but options were diverse enough. Food was delicious. They charge 500LKR per person per hour for bike riding, which I felt was a little on the expensive side for locals.

We spent 4 nights at the Tourmaline during our trip to Sri Lanka. Staying at this hotel really made our trip to Sri Lanka the success that it was. the front desk executive was superb and took care of us like we were the only guests at the hotel. He not only helped us coordinate everything from going into Kandy for a beer to a rafting and cycling trip, but he ensured we had a good experience and saved us money in the process. The driver met us at the Colombo airport on time and took us to Kandy (about a 2 hour drive in heavy traffic and windy roads). We were welcomed by candles, tea and a cold cloth. Our room was beautifully decorated with flowers congratulating us on our anniversary. We also received such decorations during our stay and on departure. We had a huge basket of wonderful fruit in our room as well. We were also provided a fantastic cake for our anniversary. The room was impeccably clean and maintained, even on the day of checkout. The bathroom had a shower/bath with plenty of hot water (takes a few minutes), shampoo, lotion, bath gel, toothbrush, shaving kit, robe and slippers. Bed was large and comfortable (beds on this side of the world tend to be harder in general). The bedding consists of a sheet, but the ac worked so well, I had to grab the blanket provided in the closet. The minibar was extremely reasonable as was the drinks in the lobby bar. I highly recommend front desk staff for all your needs. He was the most professional and efficient individual I have ever encountered. He met us each day with a handshake and the arrangements all sorted out. Whenever we needed anything he was there to assist. Our rafting/cycling trip and local sites tours were wonderful. I can't thank him enough for making our trip to Sri Lanka fabulous. I also want to thank the staff in general. Everyone was amazing.

We enjoyed the luxury of having the entire bungalow to ourselves, whilst at the same to time we enjoyed the little walk up the hill to use the restaurant and swimming pool. The service was excellent, and the bungalow was immaculate. We would love to return to the bungalow and share it with a group of friends - it would be the ideal location to share a few days together.

This hotel is highly recommended for those, including families, looking for some peace and quiet in a mountain setting. In our case, coming from the Arab Gulf, we were not interested in staying at a beach resort and staying in the city of Kandy also did not appeal to us. If you are in the same position, this is a great choice. To be clear: this hotel is not in Kandy but around 17km away in the mountains, which is nice in terms of atmosphere but less so for the 50 minute one-way trip into the city, which practically speaking requires transport arranged by the hotel. Hotel staff are very accommodating and went out of their way to make our trip and enjoyable one. We were traveling with a two year-old child, and they were good sports about her messes at breakfast/dinner and so on. Overall, if you're looking for some peace and a base from which to undertake excursions in and around Kandy, this hotel is highly recommended.

We have stayed at several large hotels throughout Sri Lanka for the past 6 weeks and this Boutique Hotel is by far the best. Situated about 10 minutes out of Kandy (no way I would want to stay in Kandy) it was quiet and clean and easy to find on Google Maps. The staff are by far the best asset of the hotel, especially the managers. Nothing was too much trouble for them and you can tell they are trained for international guests. We ate several meals at the hotel and the food was great. Beds were comfortable and the rooms decorated beautifully. When we head back to Kandy in the future we will definitely be staying here again.

The road around Kandy is tricky and it was difficult to find Kandy House, definitely need additional signs on the road with phone numbers. The landlord family is very welcoming and kind. The house was great, but breakfast was very very poor - tiny omelet, little bread with some fruits place and and 3-in-1 Nescafe cup. Had to go to breakfast in another places.

We were looking for a high end, boutique hotel with outstanding customer service. We got all of this. We only stayed a couple of days and this was about R&R - if you're looking for something lively this isn't for you but if you are looking for somewhere to relax, read a book and enjoy fantastic customer service then this is the place

Traveler impressions of Kandy
Two days are fine to reach the general sightseeings in the city. Food is good and many options to fit your stomach.
This was our least favourite city in Sri Lanka - it's hot, very busy and congested with traffic, very few decent places to eat for the size of the city and our visit to the Temple of the Tooth was spoiled by it being so busy and overrun with visitors that it was impossible to enjoy the experience there.
We were glad to get way from Kandy although our lovely guest house that we stayed in up in the hills above the city was one of the highlights of our stay in Sri Lanka so it wasn't all bad!
Kandy is a super central location to do short trips or launch your trip to other parts of Sri Lanka. I recommend visiting the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Tooth.
In MHO, the Pinnawella Elephant Orphanage has gone down in quality and become much more commercialised in recent years but many people still enjoy a short trip there to view the bathing elephants. From Kandy, you can catch the Badulla line train that takes you through amazing views of the hill country. Reserved tickets get sold up quick so try to get your tickets as early as possible.
Kandy is a nice city with a cool hill-station like climate, ideal for 1-2 days stay, homestays here are very comfortable and worth experiencing, there are places of religious interests and overall a nice place to visit in Sri Lanka
A fun place with lots of variety and set in the mountains where the climate and scenery are agreeable.
Nice city, less chaotic than Colombo. Good shopping in comparison to other areas, decent mall. On the way to, from Kandy there are leather goods shops, good for picking up poufs, chairs, bags etc, haggle for a good price.
Nice lake tho very dirty. The sacred temple is good to see, don't go on a Poya day or you'll squished. Wear white and cover up shoulders, legs etc. Helgas Folly is worth a visit, a tuk can take you, really interesting and has lots of monkeys about. A night or two is all that's needed. The train rides in and out are good and in Nuwara eliya you can pick up cheap outdoor clothing brands like north face, Patagonia, burton etc, normally seconds from stalls around the back of the Main Street. Bargain hard. Best place I recommend staying is Ana Shanti villa in Kandy, immaculately clean, lovely staff, fab breakfast, good price and they can arrange drivers etc for trips etc. it's also walking distance to the city, maybe 20mins around the lake, to the mall, temple, Kandy dancers etc. The garden cafe is close by too for a nice local lunch or dinner.
overall boring place. nightlife near to zero. you can spend time at botanical garden, kandy lake with Relic temple.
i also wathced cultural show near relic temple which was not much enjoyable. few people like Pinnawala elephant orphanage but i did not like to visit there
A beautiful city situated around the lake. Has good eateries and bakeries. The Sri Lankan cultural shows in the evening are really very good and depict the history and culture of the country.
Kandy is a nice and clean city compared t the other cities in Sri Lanka. There are plenty of places around for your shopping needs.
Beautiful breathtaking sights are the most precious part of the Kandy tour.
We enjoyed Kandy but it is the second largest city in Sri Lanka and the traffic is horrendous. Shopping was nothing special but there are some very good local places to eat.
Kandy is a bit more touristy than Colombo so some prices are inflated. There are numerous scams from tuk-tuk drivers that occur everywhere but beware of the Ayurvedic massage as your driver may take you to a place that is well below standard. Tea factories, gem shops, the standard tuk-tuk stops abound in Kandy. Getting around from the hills takes a tuk-tuk. Staying in town, many things can be seen whilst walking. It's a good place to spend a couple nights and explore the surrounding areas. Mountains around Nuwara Eliya are spectacular. People, as with every other part of the country we visited, were so eager to smile and say hello. The highlight of our journey was the people of Sri Lanka. Always friendly and smiling as well as helpful.
It was a bit of a disappointment for us. We were expecting more, especially that everyone always rave about Kandy.
They shops close very early at night. There are some great restaurants but they also close around 9-10pm. Not much to do with small children. Of course the views are great and we enjoyed our visit to the bathic and wood carving factories. The people are very friendly and of course the Golden Temple was great. I will not recommend a tour guide there. They do take advantage and tries to make as much money as possible. We enjoyed it but expected more.........
Kandy is good for a get away. The weather is ok and there is site seeing in the city as well as just outside of kandy.
Specially the tea plantations.
Nice green city with a lake in the middle. Sacred tooth relic temple is the main attraction of the city.
You can plan to go to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Paradiniya as they are worth a visit. A nice vantage point to see the temple, lake and the city in general.
Beautiful place . We stayed by the lake . The temple was good to see but men wear long trousers or you will find you will be wearing a sarong as my husband & son had to !!! If you want to eat plenty to chose from if western or local food though I must say the worst meal we had during stay in Sri Lancaster was in 'the pub' in kandy .
My husband ordered chicken sandwich but it was paste . Not good & the most expensive we had aso so avoid .
Very interesting and lively town with good shopping, pubs and restaurants - Victoria Pub and Restaurant especially good for a meal and a few drinks.
The Royal Hotel and Pub is a an old colonial style building with a courtyard pub area and restaurant upstairs - worth a visit just to see the character building. A warm welcome and excellent service in both - good places to relax in the evenings.
Kandy is an enjoyable place to stay for a couple of days, to see places like the Temple of the Tooth, Tea Museum and so on.
It's easy to walk around and our experience was that tuk tuk drivers were generally fair in their pricing, given a little negotiation. Places to eat at night seem limited, but we really enjoyed the rice and curry at the Empire Cafe - though you need to eat early as were were told they close about 8pm.
Kandy itself is nothing special. Lots to do outside the city though so I would advise you book a driver or tuk tuk and go and explore.
Trains around Kandy are a good way to travel and cheap with interesting views of the tea plantations and countryside
We really enjoyed our short stay in Kandy. We visited the obligatory tea factory and herbal garden and enjoyed both.
Goods being sold at these places are priced pretty high and I believe what is offered in central markets is pretty much the same at greatly reduced prices. There is fantastic scenery all around this area and we got a driver and vehicle for a day just to show us around. It was well worth the price of about 5000 rupees we paid. Be aware however they will want to take you to certain sites were they get commission on what you spend. We just declined politely if we did not want to go there. We enjoyed traditional Kandy dancers one night. Probably a lot more than we originally expected to. Some of the dancers showed a high degree of acrobatic skill during some of the dances which got the entire crowd whooping and applauding. I reckon Kandy is a 'must see' on a tour of Sri Lanka
One must visit a place called Embakka Temple. It has one of the most beautiful wood carvings. A visit to the DaladaMaligawa at 6:00pm when they carry out the night rituals is a very interesting experience.
If you have seen other temples I wouldn't bother coming here unless like us you needed to due to the travel time.
Kandy is so old and charming and civilized. Kandy lake is a divine place to go, and the tooth relic. This city is unforeseeable beautiful.
..I never know in a world there is a magic mixed place: European style buildings, Sri Lanka style temple, peaceful lake and mountain, huge buthda siting on top of the mountain, India food....it suits you any dream to go there...and the bunch of elephants swimming in the river....
The city is overrated and I would not vivid it twice. The location is beautiful; the city is hidden among the hills.
It lacks however the basic ingredients to make a touristic success. The traffic is horrible and air filled with diesel particles. Restaurants are mediocre at best. The tooth temple is basically the only place worth seeing. 3-4 hours is everything you need to get a good impression of Kandy.
Kandy gives us a better impression than Colombo because of the great amount of things to do, see or discover.
The temple of tooth visit just before a nice walk around the lake is a must-do in Sri-Lanka.
Famous for the Budhist temple of the tooth Kandy has this stunning temple and lots more including the historic Queen's hotel.
This is the area of ancient kings and Kandy masks as well as drums, dancing and even its own special way to wear the sari. A very colourful and historic town especially if you can visit during the perahera when the town moves to the procession of gaily attired elephants, fire eaters, fire dancers and other colourful pageantry. A very special place but with dreadful traffic congestion.
Kandy is very much a busy city, but if you're staying out of the city centre as we were,it was worthwhile stay for the 2 nights we were there.
The purpose of us going to Kandy was to get the train to Nurawa Eliya
Very quirky town, nice people, beautiful mix of culture and scenery. However, the concierge at the Queen's hotel wasn't among the nice people we met.
We came in to inquire about dinner and availability for August then sat at the sofa in reception area to wait for our car. He insisted we had to get out of the hotel (which we did gladly as by that time the damp and worn out furniture of the place started to dampen our mood too).
Kandy is a must of you are visiting Sri Lanka. The people are friendly and welcoming. The scenery is amazing.
The city is surrounded by lush green rolling hills with some spectacular views. I would recommend staying up in the hills and using the cheap taxi services to the city centre and lake area. watching the traditional Kandy dancers is a must if you want to see some traditional and cultural aspects of this region. 3 days / 2 nights is long enough to visit. Highly recommend a visit to Kandy.
Peaceful place with nice atmosphere, perfect for relax and some sightseeing. Nothing special or great around just a nice place to visit.
You should dress your self in proper clothing when visiting temples. There are good places to eat and shop within the Kandy City.
There is ample parking at the city car park which ajoins the only shopping arcade/mall. You can have a peaceful walk around the Kandy Lake or even take a boat ride. Places to visit would be the temples, botanical park, war cemetery, knuckles mountain range for hiking.
You can enjoy the city in all aspects , all sides , it's an UNESCO heritage site , the best time to visit I beleve July to August , finding the tooth festival pagents at royal palace , the city relax you all the time , botanical gardens & temple of tooth relic are most attracted , lot to explore there during you visit , it is good , search on Internet about the city & beware of took took drivers !! As they charge different rates unless they are not a meter taxi !!!

More about Kandy
The city is easily accessible by bus or train, so international travelers arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport can arrive in Kandy via taxi, bus, or rail. Once in Kandy, travelers will not be short of things to do or places to see.
As the home of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy hosts many people who visit as tourists or religious pilgrims. The temple is believed to be one of the most holy places for those in the Buddhist faith as it houses a tooth relic from the Buddha. There are many hotels near the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, making it convenient for travelers to get to the temple relatively easily. The entire city is easily navigated by walking or using the city bus.
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a favorite among most who visit Sri Lanka, but even more so among those traveling with children. There are many elephants that roam around the grounds, and watching them eat or splash water around can provide hours of entertainment. Hotels around the elephant orphanage are located near the Knuckles Mountain Range, for a convenient access into the area as well as seeing the surrounding sites.
There is a lot more to see and do in Kandy, and the interactive map on this page is a great way to explore where the rest of the hotels, landmarks, and other must-see destinations can be found.
