In the United Arab Emirates is Liwa, a collection of villages and oasis on the edge of the country’s most impressive desert region. There are two roads winding down from the north that ushers travelers into the region. The E11 motorway is lined with settlements and ends in Mezaira’a which is the center of the area.

is the most impressive dune in the Emirates. In July, it hosts the Liwa Date Festival with air conditioned tents featuring many types of dates, competitions and shows, Bedouin handicrafts, and information and displays about the area. There are also 4x4 competitions held here. The route alone to Tal Mireb is an attraction unto itself with the landscape offering photo opportunities along the way as well as an ideal setting for a sunset picnic.
