Standard of living is going up as observed in the prices of food and the structural buildings coming up.
However, there is still the other side, which is the population that is not catching up.
Just becareful when you take their public transport (beca) because they do not have a standard price.
Always ask the price before you travel.
Most people in Medan are very friendly and helpful, although there have been a handful of more disturbing people we have met on this trip.
English is not widely spoken in Medan, and when people do speak it, you will have difficulty processing what is being said (especially if English is not your first language). In general it is as safe as any large city, but perhaps because it is a small city it should be a bit safer. Crossing the street may be a challenge for some, as there are no pedestrian crossings and few traffic lights, and the lights are not always obeyed. Traffic flow is determined by everyone kind of co-operating to make it "safe", but having said that, we did see a blind man successfully cross the road unassisted. For families with young children, you will need to keep a close watch. There are enormous holes in the sidewalk that could easily swallow a child whole, there is the aforementioned traffic danger, and there are some crazy people around, plus some people who give off a distinctively criminal vibe. Overall 90% of people have been incredibly nice and friendly, but if you have kids you don't want to let them run amok.
First thing about Medan is their airport is very new, that's really surprise me. Food at Medan is really nice, must try their roasted pork.
We love it very much, as Medan has a lot of Chinese people, it is not that hard to find chinese food. Bakery with big portion but cheap. Their traffic is kinda messy and very busy at peak hour. So if you would to travel around Medan city, may consider to hire a driver as it is not that expensive and easier to travel around. Beside, visit places like Lake Toba, Simalem and Brastagi, you have to come to Medan.
Medan is the 3rd largest city in indonesia with many of etnic and culture. kindly the people is also friendly
Medan is the third biggest city in indonesia. You can find al kst anything here. The traffic and the driving attitude of the most of the citizens is louzy.
..u heva to be xtra carefull. Many great food here....like an endless search of foodism
u should prepare your Rupiah money otherwise its very hard to find the money changer esp during public holiday.
. and its more expensive rather than money changer in Malaysia. be careful with the citizen. some will provoke u to have some tips. also be careful and do not panic or influenced by the seller during your shopping in "Pajak Ikan"-- they try to provoke you as much as they can.
Of the big cities in INdonesia we have visited, Medan is my favorite as it has more religious diversity and the people are extremely friendly.
IF you are adventurous, there are plenty of activities, but most of the outdoor activities are much further than advertised, usually 2-5 hours. Shopping is good for in Indonesia, but customs are so restrictive that imported items are not always available.
A lot of peoples. The road crowded with cars every morning. Sometimes like there is no space for the motorcyclist to be on the road.
Medan was ok!, but our journey to Tankahan to watch the elephants was ruined by a stretch of damaged roads for about 10KM,and when we reached there finally after 5hours ,they collected Rp.
10,000 entrance only to tell us that the show has ended ?????. Wasted one whole day, never ever take a trip there!!!
this city is not a sightseeing city, just for transit,no much good places to visit,a small city, not worth for tour.
Basically, Medan - Indonesia is good to visit because of the food. You can find very nice food, all kinds of food, including chinese, indonesian, western.
Besides, the famous Lake Toba and Brastagi worth to visit as well. They are about 3-5 hours of driving time from City of Medan.
A safe city with friendly people. Its have variety of food and restaurants with eastern and western flavors.
Happened to go to one local shop which doing handmade leather shoes. Bought a handmade leather shoe and slipper. A good handycraft with quality and affordable price.
Medan is one of the biggest cities in Indonesia. You can find everything in Medan, such as food, durian fruits, mall, historical building and palace, etc.
For business, you can rent the hall or room in hotels.
roads are stoney and bumpy. needs major repair. hawker food are very expensive. becak and taxi drivers are not honest with fares.
they could charge double or triple fares which you need to waste time bargaining
Road surrounding and nearby this area is the worst. Full of Hole, like at villages not showing medan is a big city.
The city is nothing special, but the culinary experience is one of the best in Indonesia. And also, in North Sumatera you can find a lot of attractions.
You can just stay at Medan and have fun elsewhere
Medan is third main city after Jakarta and Surabaya. Should at least stay one night stay in city before or after the must-go place of interests-Lake Toba, Brastagi.
Busy place with many cars, becak and motorbikes around. Peoples are driving very closely to each other.
Have to be very careful when going out, because it's too crowded and scares of pick pocketing.
Medan is a very interesting city with many attractions. Lake Toba is 5 hours drive from the city. Two theme parks about 3 hours drive.
Shopping centers around the city.
MEDAN IS A BUSY TOWN. VERY CROWDED NOT VERY CLEAN. NOTHING MUCH FOR SIGHT SEEING. SHOPPING YES THEY HAVE SOME GOOD MALLS.
IF YOU GOING TO VISIT LAKE TOBA THEN YOU WILL ENJOY YOUR TRIP. IF JUST VISITING MEDAN WELL MAYBE FOOD.
the very nice place with friendly ppls here, i think i am gonna stay another few night here in shortly
If you can spare the time, Lake Toba is definitely worth a visit. Gorgeous nature and rich cultural sites around the Lake and Samosir island.
Medan is also nice for culinary trip.
Just remember that it costs a minimum of US$35 for a visa and there is a departure tax of Rs200,000 (equivalent to US$20) when you leave.
The departure tax is NOT included in your air ticket. So a total cost of US$55 if you are going to Indonesia before other costs.
Unique ppl, Good and incredibly tasty street food. Cheap to stay. But traffic is bad as in Jakarta, a bit dusty.
Medan is a city with legendary culinary spot, Toba Lake is the biggest lake in world, brastagi is a very wonderfull place.
medan city can make you remember when you visit the old building , sultan deli palace and the great night life too
third largest city in Indonesia and of course look like soon being a city never sleep where we can spend our night with night activities
I had a very negative view of Medan, the third largest in Indonesia. The taxi ride from airport to hotel cost 170000 rupiah, but the taxi from hotel to airport come up to 220000 rupiah.
Beside that a con man was at the check in counter at the airport, which I thought was the airport customer service staff grab my air-flight ticket and luggage and wanted to check in for me. Medan really give me a bad impression.
medan kota dengan tingkat budaya yg tinggi di mana isyana kesultanan masih berdiri dengan megah.. salah sat kebanggaan masyarakat medan
