Traveler impressions of Paihia
Paihia is a small boring town where the tourist trade is busy. Take a boat trip to be amongst the dolphins but you have to cope with the many dumb tourist who stick a camera in your view !! The Maori heritage is there to see but like everything in new Zealand at a cost.
This is a great base for a fewdays while traveling around N Island. The walks are interesting, but just generally relaxing and enjoying the laid back atmosphere are the clinchers.
warm friendly place with lots to do ...and easy to get to at least half a dozen similar great places in the area
Paihia is the centre of the bay of Islands. A short distance from Waitangi & a quick ferry takes you to Russell.
Great place to relax, good beaches, sightseeing. But very expensive to to do boat tours to the islands.
awesome place for a holiday or for business stay, plenty to do if you wish to, but can also relax by the beach with a good book.
Pahia has two faces: one with a cruiseship and the other without. As soon as a cruisshio arrives the smallcity is crowded of people and very lively, but as soon as the ship as left it becomes quiet.
Paihia is a lovely little town and can be used as a staging area to explore the surroundings such as Russell, Kerikeri and Cape Reinga.
loved paihia, we had a self contained unit so shoped and ate in and also had meals out, every one was really friendly 3 cruise ships were in on the days we were there the markets of hand made gifts were thriving and selling really lovely hand made treasures, but it didn't seem to busy despite all the extra people in town.

More about Paihia
The Maritime Building is the best place to start the exploration of Paihia, as the Bay of Islands information center and the major tour companies are all located at the same wharf. From there, it’s possible to arrange tours such as the Fullers Bay of Islands adventure, offering a huge selection of cruises and tours of the region, including a chance to swim with the dolphins or take a full cruise along the Bay of Islands.
Diving enthusiasts will undoubtedly want to dive the Rainbow Warrior wreck which was once a Greenpeace boat that was sunk in the 1980s by French secret service agents. The boat was then refloated to its current location in the Bay of Islands and made into an artificial reef. It’s now a popular diving destination, mainly operated by Paihia Dive. Considering everything the Bay of Islands has to offer to any tourist, Paihia is a great jumping off point for those looking to explore this stunning side of New Zealand.
