More about Samosir

Within the huge crater lake of Toba sits the beautiful island of Samosir. The area is home to the Toba Batak culture, and the Lake Toba experience isn’t complete without a stay on Samosir. It is about 5 hours away from North Sumatra’s capital city of Medan. The ferry crossing to reach Samosir goes from Parapat on the mainland to the villages of Tomok and Tuktuk. A train ride from Medan to Pematang Siantar can help reduce travel time, leaving only a 2-hour bus ride to complete the journey.

Samosir Island measures 45km by 20km, making exploring an easy feat. The traditional village of Tomok Village is a major gateway, and features the stone sarcophagus of chief Sidabutar – a site that dates back to the early 19th century. Adat houses colored in black, white, and red color the view and showcase Batak designs. Another popular entry point is Tuktuk. This is where visitors go when wanting to hit the beach or take part in water sports. The cool, fresh air and range of accommodation and dining make it a popular draw for travelers. Other noteworthy villages on the island include Ambarita and its stone furniture as well as Simanindo and the elaborate Raja Sidauruk house which is now a museum.

There are several accommodation options to choose from in and around Samosir, especially in the village of Tuktuk. Be sure to check out the interactive map of Samosir for information on hotel locations, attractions, and must-see destinations.
