My personal thoughts about Ubon is that it is fast growing city. I came here 5 years ago and I have seen the difference.
There were no taxis, only Tuk Tuk's or motor bikes. Now it is a sprawling city, not with skycrapers, but many new developments going on and more to come. So it is a good place to visit as it is close to the Laos and Cambodia borders if you decide to make a trip to those countries. As for Ubon there really is nothing to see but shop and some good night life. You would have to travel outside Ubon for sightseeing, but not hard to do. Enjoy folks.
Ever since my first visit in 2009 till now I never regretted to go back there as the food and people are so nice to others.
Of course, the city is clean too and night bazaar really good during the year end Nov-Dec periods. Enjoys life while you can...life is so short....
visiting temples in the city center is very interesting , after that you spend your time with beautiful nature of this province with Sirindhorn Dam, Kaeng Tana cascade on Mun river and along the way to Khong Jiem : Pha Cha Dai to see the first light of sunrise
Not much to offer but a nice town by Thai standards, extremely friendly people. Not much to offer in terms of "attractions" apart from the National Park 60 km away.
Ubon is well known for its friendly people and that is no exaggeration. A bit short on the ground as far as other attractions.
Still attractive city though Spread Out, so you will be using lots of taxis. Bring a Thai/English map, and point to where you're going as few people speak English in these parts.
It's very humid and hot. Many people are from vietnam which they have been living there since the war in Vietnam.
There are restaurants selling vietnamese food.Famous Vietnamese pho or noodles in soup. Well known and very good delicious. It has mince pork in balls, pork sausage cut in slices, fried shallots and spring onions and white noodles.Must try!.They called it Kuay Chup Yuan.
Ubon Ratchathani is very quiet looked so lifeless, easy to go about by Taxi and its all in meter. It's also cheap to travel by Taxi.
Sunee Plaza has a hotel, supermarket, shopping center and banks.
Ubon Ratchathani is a very nice city. The river "Moon" runs through the city. One should try to sit or dine by the riverside in the evening.
It's a very nice pleasant weather and atmosphere.
Quiet town, spread out a bit in parts. Not over westernized (no 7-11 or Mc Donalds on every corner) But has what you need.
Taxi's start at 30 baht and everywhere in town the meter never went above 40. With connections by bus, train or air you can easily get just about anywhere from here including China, Vietnam, Lao and of course around in Thailand.
Ubon Ratchathni has lots of historical places to visit. There is an unseen Thailand sight which lies in this town.
The attraction is called 'Sampun Boke' with the lava stones. It is a great area for children to learn about history and enjoy walking in the forest and learn about the ancient drawings on the cliff at 'Pa Taem'. Food in Ubon is North Eastern food with somtum and sticky rice and is a must try for every travelers. Enjoy the countryside scenery with the paddy fields in Ubon whilst in the car traveling. Have fun!
Very good mix of many thing such as cultural, nature, religious and traditional. also mix of both country Thai's and Lao's
Great little city, laid back, friendly, everything within walking distance, not yet sunk under the weight of back-packer hostels.
Relaxing.
I've gone to Ubon 4 or 5 times and everytime I was completely unable to find any nightlife whatsoever.
Of course, being a foreigner, the local townspeople don't want to be seen associating with you.
Ubon is a small city. Easy to walk around and not many tourist. People are nice, but I did not see so many things I could be doing there.
However, we did meet several people who live there as expatriates and love it, as well as some people who stayed a week or two just for the relaxing ambiance.
There are so many temple in the city but I hear about outside the city have so many famous places to travel
Interesting looking city. But my hotel was too far away to enjoy all this vibrant city has to offer!
We have visited many temples in town there were interested and inspired us to find out more information of Ubol in the old day.
We enjoyed most of the food, especially, noodles we plan to go back in August for Buddhist Lent.
I have traveled many parts of the world and this town is honestly one of the strangest places I have ever been.
In almost every thing you see and do you will have to be cautious about not judging performance, service, and actions...I have never seen a people so proud of what they do and how they do it that they would refuse to make simple changes to better themselves, their service or their products. Don't confuse negativity here with honest as I am not a negative person but must remain honest and open about my repeated experiences here...There are so many obvious ways to improve things here, even by the world's standards yet they hold on so tightly to the seeming idea that "We are Thai and this is just how we are mentality," that it borderlines magnified ignorance at times. If this kind of thing bothers you, it is best to check your brains in and leave them in storage while visiting this city especially. Again, been in Thailand 3 months. This town is very, very different than the rest.
Ubon is still 'real' Thailand, with the 'pros' that its not farang crowded, people did not forget how to smile yet, normal life going on around you.
And the 'cons' that you are virtually helpless without knowledge of Thai language. Even at the reception of the - probably - best Ubon hotel nobody is able to speak more than a few words (only exception: the hotel my Thai wife worked before. Coz she speaks good and fluent English:-)
It is a Big and very nice City to visit. A must see for all. Great food and site seeing. In July is the Candle festival, a very great event to see.
Great shopping for cheap cloths and food. So many thing to see and do.
I am going to travel Ubon Ratchathani with my parents, around 12 peoples. We are staying 3 days 2 nights.
We rented a van to travel all most attraction places especially temple. U must try to visit Ubon then you will know the amazing of Thailand. Recommend to visit.
Personally, I'd never go back to Ubon. It is not my kinda town. I only stayed there two nights and wish it were only one - or none.
GET A CAB TO TAKE YOU TO 3 OR 4 TEMPLES TO SEE THE WAX FLOATES. MAKE SURE TO GO TO SPAGO RESTURANT AND PEPPERS BAKERY AND RESTURANT.
Ubon Ratchathani is a nice town for a short stay with a few nice attractions outside the city. Hence be prepared to drive for quite some time around the surrounding landscapes.
In addition you can also easily access Laos from Ubon.
We come to Ubon very often, as my wife is from there/here. It is growing very fast, this can be good and bad.
Bad because the traffic is getting worse, but more good, because they are about to open Central Plaza and a few other shopping places...the more shopping venues that exist, the more of everything else you can find. Ubon is a great place to visit and I'd highly recommend anyone to see the "Heart of Issan".
Ubon is gettinh more busier everday, the aiport is very good. giving t a great start to touring greater issan.
Ubon's a nice enough town. Like all Thai cities, it's no oil-painting, but it makes up for it with a few interesting areas.
The central park area is nice to wander around, and the Moon River is impressive. Better still, hire a car and take a trip to the surrounding national parks.
