More about Udon Thani

Udon Thani – nicknamed Udon – is a center of agricultural trade in Thailand's northeast Isaan region. Initially coming to life during the Vietnam War, many US servicemen chose to make Udon Thani their home. Today, the city has a large expat community, plus the supporting social infrastructure of cafés, shops, and restaurants.

Udon is perhaps most well known for its Bronze Age dig site, Ban Chiang. In the 1960s, archaeologists uncovered some of the earliest examples of Bronze Age pottery and jewelry in excavated graves that date back to 2100 BCE. Ban Chiang was subsequently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered the most significant find regarding the Bronze Age in Southeast Asia.

Udon is also popular as a stopover point for overland travelers on their way to Lao. The opening of the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge that links Nong Khai on the Thai side to Thalaweng on the Lao side facilitates easy road crossing.

For a relatively small city, hotels in Udon are surprisingly well equipped with business class hotels available in the city center, close to markets, convenience stores, and tuk tuks. Udon Thani International Airport is located close to the center of town and services flights from Phuket, Bangkok, and Laung Prabang in Laos.
