In a much more recent past, WE( USA/CIC/Congress) carried out secret bombings of Laos 40-50-60 years ago, ostensibly to stop/interrupt the Ho Chi Minh Trails , used to support the freedom fighters in the War with Vietnam. The best place to stay/overnight which you can fully learn about both significant events is the Maly Hotel. The restaurant has an excellent menu and can easily sustain life for all customers. The building itself is large, rising some four stories from it foundation; the room (#5) was huge—three rooms (one bathroom which actualyhad a bona fide tub) a smaller room with a single bed and a larger bedroom containing a queen sized bed, remote controlled TV, & closet. You can also view an an hour long video “The Most Secret Place On Earth”, created partly at the behest of Mr. Sousath Phetrasy, now deceased co-owner of this historic site. GREAT!

I stayed at this hotel on two nights in a one-week period both before and after I visited Sam Neua. I have stayed in Xieng Khouang previously to visit the Plain of Jars, and Muang Khoun. My stay at this hotel was enjoyable although the room on the first night was better than the one on the second night. This is because there was a problem with the toilet flushing, and the worker was never able to fix it. However, for the most part, the staff were very helpful. The breakfast was great, and the room had many amenities to keep the customer comfortable and happy. The hotel is within walking distance of a laundry, night market, day market, good restaurants and an internet cafe. It is also very close to a mini-bus station used to go to Sam Neua and back.

Very good hotel if you’re visiting the Plain of Jars. Less than 10 minutes walk into town. Very good hotel if you’re visiting the Plain of Jars. Less than 10 minutes walk into town. Booked my tour at a tour office in the town which is connected to Nice Guest House which is on the right hand side of the road as you are walking away from the hotel. The guide/drivers name was Van Koh his English was very good and easy to understand. We used him for a driver only but he was quite happy to answer any questions and the thing I liked most is that we never felt under pressure. I would certainly recommend him. We did have someone at the hotel who wasn’t connected to the hotel who tried to sell us a tour when we arrived which was very expensive. Glad we didn’t have him. The hotel also arranged a complementary pick up and drop off at the airport.

This was a lovely hotel with enormous rooms (separate sitting room and bedroom, plus large bathroom, immaculately maintained. The food was generally excellent. The hotel provides a free bus service to drop you wherever you want whenever you want and will also collect you, either at a prearranged time or if you call them. Free airport pickup and dropoff. The hotel will arrange tours of the Plain of Jars and other attractions - not the cheapest but probably the best quality of all such tours. Ask for Tey as your guide, if possible. Only a few reservations: service can be a little haphazard at times and WiFi is only available in the reception area - the only hotel we stayed in in Laos where WiFi was not available throughout.

We loved our 3 nights here, this hotel is on a hill overlooking phonsavan so suggest a Tuk Tuk to get you here from the town if you have bags, otherwise it's only a 25 min walk into town ,so unlike other reviewers we walked in and out with no problem. They are little wooden chalets, with a sitting area which has the fireplace and the staff will give you as much wood as you want for no charge, and even light the fire for you. We loved this, every night when we got back from town after dinner, to sit next to a real fire reading a book in what is best described as a Swiss chalet on a hill overlooking the town.the dogs are super friendly ( and numerous) and will walk around with you if you walk in the Forrest, they know the best paths. The breakfast is one of the best in Laos. Can't recommend this place enough, you will love it if your not to fat and unfit. Don't mind walking. Or have your own transport. The two young lads who seemed to be running the place where fantastic and couldn't do enough for you..great place to stay.

We had a lovely stay at Kong's. Good, clean room with everything you need. Very hot shower as mentioned in previous reviews. Now to Khong himself: such a friendly, incredibly funny and well educated person! We did the plain of Jars tour (hills of jars ;-)) with him and it was one of the best guided tours ever. Don't even think about doing it somewhere else. He knows all the details, but the best part is that he has a way of telling you things, that you simply enjoy listening and do not feel tired of being lectured. He also answers all the questions and really offered some insight knowledge in terms of Lao culture and behavior. Thanks a lot for the great fun and hospitality! Also recommend to buy the onward bus tickets from him.

Best customer service I've had yet in Laos! They picked us up from the mini van/bus stop (had my name on a piece of paper!) - all 100meters away from the hotel - and drove us to the front door. Check us in and walked us to the room. The room was simple but clean with waters and the basics. A/C isn't necessary, the weather was so much cooler than anywhere else we've been. Would stay here again if I ever came back! After we relaxed, someone from the hotel explained the pricing for a tour of the plain of jars. A bit out of our price range but they came down a lot on the price, I guess because it's the slow season. Make friends with people on your bus ride and try to organize a "group" tour together. It was hard to find random people on the street and restaurants to form our "group" but we did and it was way cheaper! The town is small, not much to do. Ate at craters for almost every meal. The free movies at the MAG office are good-very educational and if no one shows up at the playing time, they'll turn on the movie for you if you ask.

We stayed 2 nights during January and would definitely choose to stay there again. It is as you would expect a simple guesthouse. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and although he didn't speak a lot of English, did his very best to engage with guests and make us feel very welcome. The location is a little way out of town but easily walkable to the main places to eat and only about 300m is on an unpaved track, the rest is on the path by the main road. The breakfast significantly exceeded our expectations. You can buy a beer from the owner and sit on the terrace upstairs and relax after a hot day at the plain of jars. The hot shower was the best we have had in 3 weeks of travelling in Lao including some rather expensive hotels.

PROS: Really good value for the price. Centrally located: 10 minute walk from bus station to Vang Vieng/Vientianne and local markets.. Within 5 minute walk to Cranky T's Cafe, Lao Falong, Bamboozle, and local restaurants. About 4-5 travel agencies within 5 minute walk that can arrange tours or rent you motorbike. Within 5 minute walk to Cranky T's Cafe, Lao Falong, Bamboozle, and local restaurants. About 4-5 travel agencies within 5 minute walk that can arrange tours or rent you motorbike. Hot Water - I actually had to turn the water heater down because the water gets hot. Super quiet - rooms are in the back off the main road. Free filtered water - you can fill up your reusable containers with free drinking water. Wi-Fi - very strong in room and throughout. TV - Plenty of channels, including CNN for international news. No need for air conditioning if you're staying during dry winter months.

However, the city of Phonsavan goes to bed by 10pm, we couldn't find transport of any kind to take us back to the resort. Walking back to the resort, through a pine forest in the dark was not so fun. There is no dinning facilities at the resort so don't expect breakfast even if it is part of the hotel package. The hotel itself is very pretty, Swiss influenced wooden style chalets. Each chalet housed 4 rooms. We had rodents visitors in the night though, we could hear them scuttling among our luggage - they ate an apple and left poo in the bathroom. I guessed that can be expected since the hotel is located in a forest. However, we took our rubbish with us when we left the hotel as we discovered that rubbish was being dumped on the hillside just outside one of the chalets. There is no wifi or internet connection but that was OK with us. The hotel staff depends on their mobile phones for communication and this includes hotel bookings. They were not expecting us since we did our reservations online. The resort is rather nice and have lots of potential. If there were no rodent visitors and easy access to transport, we would have stay for a few more days.

Located almost directly across from the bus stop it was less than 5 min walk to the hotel. Check in was super fast and staff were very polite. We had a room with a view from the back of the hotel but it was much better than the front view of the road. Could see for miles and the fields/trees were very nice to look at. We had a room with a view from the back of the hotel but it was much better than the front view of the road. Could see for miles and the fields/trees were very nice to look at. The bed in our room was one of the most comfortable beds in Southeast Asia that I have ever slept on. Large room with a good size bathroom/shower. Turn on the water heater switch when you arrive, takes awhile to heat up. Tv in our room but no fridge. Floors were a bit dusty/dirty but this was a minor issue. a/c worked well, you need to get remote from staff. A market across the street. Went to see Plain Of Jars and the Lao memorial and Vietnam War memorial, rent tuk tuk because it is further distance than you think. We paid 100,000 Kip for tuk tuk to take us to both memorials, and 120,000 Kip next day for a trip to Plain Of Jars. They will wait for you to get visit and then return you to town. Hotel is located on a long straight street, several types of shops but not a lot of places to eat near hotel. We walked about 20 mins towards the town centre and found a great restaurant called "Bamboozle", made entirely from bamboo. This place had awesome food, great prices and very friendly staff. We stayed in Phonsavan 2 days and ate there 3 times, highly recommended. Located just down the road from the Xieng Khouang hotel, same side.

The hotel is located away from the Xieng Khouang main street and getting a ride back to the hotel after 8pm is almost impossible. Very difficult to catch a tuk-tuk to and fro from the hotel. We had to walk back to the hotel and it was about 5 kms. The rooms are comfortable. Only an Engish speaking receptionist was available. Other staff don't speak English at all. They...

The hotel is beautiful and the location is great, but to tell the truth I won't stay here again. There are other hotels next to the river in much quieter areas. We stayed in another building some meters away from the main one, so I had to walk to the main building for breakfast or to ask for something (no telephone in the room). The area in front of this building has been chosen by some drunkards to play loud Lao music and drink and sing in a terrible way but luckily they get drunk enough by 20:00 and then leave. Other than that, it's an agreeable place to stay, but I'll try another hotel in my next trip to Luang Prabang.

It was one of the worst hotels i have ever stayed. Staff was rude, towels was dirty, very very dirty, toilet was very rundown, mattress was hard, pillow stinks badly, no daily room cleaning if you are staying for 2 nights, nothing much to walk about around the hotel at night, morning market is about 5 - 10 minutes walk away from this hotel. Overall was bad!

This is the second account where our Agoda booking of Laos accommodation did not register with the guesthouse. We didn't have a booking printout because we booked from Chiangmai using my mobile phone. The staff kept showing us the amount on his calculator for us to pay and we kept repeating that we have paid up and will not pay again. My husband was visually upset and finally, we were shown to our room. Of course, we were not happy with our accommodation for we do not know if the staff intentionally assigned us one of the worse rooms. The toilet door was broken and fixed with a plastic cardboard which has detached. There was no hot water as advertised and it was freezing cold at night and morning that we didn't take a shower. Glad it was only for a night! I feel that for the amount we've paid, it was not worth it. I hope Agoda will be more selective with guesthouses in Laos to avoid causing customers such inconvenience.

We got here at about 4 PM and our room was not ready. They made us sit in their lobby for almost 20 minutes before giving us a room in their "STAFF QUARTER". Nobody speaks english in the Hotel so best of luck explaining or asking anything. Hotel featured as wi fi enabled but im not surprised that it was not working. One of the worst places i have ever stayed.

So even though this hotel is 2 blocks from the main center, it is definitely NOT quiet. The only pro is that the rooms were clean and well kep

A nice hotel with wonderful large bedrooms with very comfortable beds. the hotel is about a 5 minute walk from the middle of town and the bars and restaurants. the hotel is a little odd as it is on the old airport so things are a little more spread out than normal. overall it a nice clean and very quiet hotel for a vist to the town or the 'Plain of Jars'.

Ok, Laos is still developing, so I've learned to find real value in places, especially places that are just beginning to develop a tourist trade like Phonsavan. At first, I was merely impressed at the size and type of facilities for the price at this guest house. I was expecting much less and it was great, if not typical, for a guesthouse in Laos. I have seen some complaints about this place on here because of the roosters next door and want to address this. Yes, there are many chickens and at least one rooster next door. Yes, there will be crowing at about 4:30am. Yes, they are loud. I had my window open, and was woken up by them, but was able to go back to sleep and honestly have found roosters to be a part of the package for many rural places in Laos and Thailand and Cambodia. If you are somewhere even vaguely rural, you will probably hear roosters. So please don't let that stop you from staying here. Close the window and/or use some earplugs. It will be fine. You have to get up early to go to see the Plain of Jars anyway! Stay here and try to get to know the folks around. They are wonderful!

We stayed 2 nights during January and would definitely choose to stay there again. It is as you would expect a simple guesthouse. The owner was very friendly and welcoming and although he didn't speak a lot of English, did his very best to engage with guests and make us feel very welcome.

GREAT!

The hotel is located away from the Xieng Khouang main street and getting a ride back to the hotel after 8pm is almost impossible. Very difficult to catch a tuk-tuk to and fro from the hotel.

If there were no rodent visitors and easy access to transport, we would have stay for a few more days.

excellent whole view and nice staff!! the transportation between hotel and city is hard cause the hotel is on the top of hill(so you can see the whole view for the phonsavanh.) all of staff did not know english,so difficult to communciate with them in loas speaking. however, the manager is polite and passion to take us to the city and had our dinner by his own car. ...

This place is a good hike from the main strip, so think twice if you don't have your own transport. The reception staff are disinterested and casual, even by local standards. The rooms are big with good showers but badly maintained overall. Views are fantastic. Breakfast is served in a restaurant half way down the hill, which the reception staff will not tell you. Bett...

Traveler impressions of Xieng Khouang
Xieng Khouang (also known as Phonsavan) was completely destroyed in the war. Nothing in town is much more than 40 years old.
At this point it's a rapidly growing town that is very short on tourist facilities. For someone interested in seeing how people actually live in today's Laos, it's fascinating. For someone seeking charm and atmosphere, it will be a major disappointment. The "jars" that give the Plain of Jars its name are worth a visit, and the Hmong New Year celebration (November and December) is colorful and enjoyable. Otherwise, unless you enjoy just walking around in a new and unfamiliar place (as I do), there probably is no reason to stay longer than a couple of days.
I already did this in the other section about the hotel area, but I will repeat that Xieng Khouang is pleasant, friendly and interesting.
Best restaurant to eat at was Bamboozels....Tour of the Jars Site was Excellent...also visit UXO Centre very interesting but sad
The town of Phonsavan itself is not much to look at, and there's not a huge amount to just stroll around and see, though it's a good base for seeing the Plain of Jars sites, the old city of Muang Khoun, and various other significant sites related to the Second IndoChina war.
Mostly an interesting place to learn a little bit about the tragic history of Lao - the MAG and QLA centres (on the main strip, two doors apart from each other) are definitely worth visiting as well.
The town itself has a lot of rubbish laying around and that stood out a lot from having left Luang Probang where the streets were clean.
The only thing going for the town is that the Plane of Jars are nearby, but personally they seem to be over rated. Access to the town is by a very winding rough road where the mini van could only average 40Km/H so be prepared for a long drive in and out.
A typical "passing-through" town if you are not interested in visiting the Plain of Jars. There is nothing special about this town aka Phonsovanh.
The city is new since it had been destroyed by U.S. bombs during the Vietnam War. There are many worthwhile sites within easy reach of the city.
It is a friendly place, but the rain can be intense.
Phonsavan is a small town, Plain of Jars and the war memorials are located on the outskirts of town so you will need a tuk tuk or car to get there.
Several markets scattered around town that provide local food. Limited places to grab snacks or water. Several places to eat but mostly just serve soups or noodles. Found great restaurant called "Bamboozle" on main road, in Phonsavan Market area. Great food, great staff, and great prices...western food available, which was a nice treat!
Xiengkhoung area is really nice, not just plain of jars. u can enjoy hill side area with beautiful sceneary.
Basically there is nothing much in Phonsavanh unless visiting the "Plain of Jars" and "Hmong Village".
It's a laid back town and a bit bored at night as there is no night markets or pubs around. Spending 1 night there will be just nice. Do drop by at Mines Advisory Group (MAG) - an UXO information center and do a little donations to help out the locals who are still suffering from the bombies during the second Indochina wars.
Xiengkhoung scenery is very nice. It is not just plain of jars areas, other tourist attractions are also very nice.
Recommend to stay on the hill.
Main attraction is the Plain of Jars (mysterious, though about its history). Visit MAG to know more about the UXO & the life of people there.
Overall, great place for the fresh cool air & superb scenery. Very relax environment, with almost no traffic except for nights where buses & lorries pass by the main road.
It reminds me of the 60's, an outback mining town with a single main street. Almost expected the theme music from " the good, the bad and the ugly" to be playing in the background as we arrived and Clint to be on a horse at the other end of the street.
However, as one of the most bombed places on the planet it survives and visiting the"Plain of Jars" was one of the highlights of our trip to Laos Due to UXB, wandering off the beaten track is not recommended. Truly worth visiting if you have the opportunity.
Plain of Jars - worth seeing at least 2 sites with an English speaking guide. Tuk-Tuks not easy to come by.
Restaurants not easily found and the food was somewhat average at best. In general, the lack of willingness to assist tourists was what really let this place down. Used a mini bus to leave Phonsovahn as recommended by our guide to Vang Vieng, never again. Recommend the coach service instead! We stopped so that the driver could pick up his overnight bag and stopped to get fuel for the mini-van and stopped a further four times for him to do his grocery shopping along the way, all before our designated meal stop. The driver left the van and motioned for everyone to get out he had a meal and a beer. We were not told how long or what reason there was for the stop. Very glad to get to Vang Vieng in one piece.
There is a lot more to see here than you will find on the internet, the only thing being advertised is the Plain of Jars, I have started to document some of the sights we saw on another travel sight as well, there are tour groups available in town and there is a choice of what to see & do.
A very quiet town with plenty of places to eat and drink. there are many different local tours on offer to keep you busy for many days.
we went in April which is very hot and dry but the 'Plain of jars' is not awash with other tourists so you can get a much better feel of the place.
Phonsavan is a very dusty town , I think the only reason to go there is to visit. The plain of jars.
Which we really enjoyed, but was a long drive from Luang Prabang. It took us 6hoursof winding roads to get there, very tiring, then 6hours back ..
A small town and a place which has nothing to do. If not for 'Plain of Jars', there is nothing to do in this town.
As it is not comfortably accessible except for an arduous journey through the mountains, not worth visiting unless you are transiting this place.
In our experience, the only reason you would visit this city was to see the Plain of Jars. We found the people rude to foreigners, especially women.
I had shorts on when we arrived and no one would speak to us, even if we said hello. They didn't become any friendlier wihen I wore a long skirt either. Having travelled in the south of Laos for a week prior to arriving in Xieng Khouang this surpised us as we had no issues with this regardless of what I was wearing (within limits of course). We ate all of our meals in Crater's as the family who runs it is extremely friendly and the prices and food were great too. We attempted to eat at other resturants however we were unable to get served at them so always headed back to Craters!! On our last day, while filling in time before our flight, we went to Mulberry's. It was interesting to see how the silk was made. The scarves were a bit more here than in other cities but having seen them being made, it was not a bitg issue.
It's really boring, but the Jars are interesting. Ask to skip the Russian Tank - there's nothing to see.
The only reason brought me there might be the plain of jars, and I liked the trip and I still like it.
And I saw relics of war there. It gives me a chance to think more about meaning of life.
The Plain of Jars is fascinating, but it is the current and recent history of the area that is most powerful in my opinion.
How resilient are the local people of this region! To have withstood, and then continued to thrive after the carpet bombing of the late 60s and early 70s is both humbling and inspiring to see and experience. It is well worth the time to visit the MAG place, the other one 2 doors down from it, and the cafe to the left of the Orchid Guest House that shows nightly screenings of the heart wrenching, mind boggling, documentary on the CIA bombing of Laos. The locals of this area are to be admired and are very worthy of whatever support we wealthy tourists can offer to them.
The only reason to go to Xieng Khouang (also known as Phonsavan) is to go to the Plain of Jars and ethnic villages and Vietnam war associated sites, the town itself is rather dull looking.
The trip from Luang Prabang took 8 hours by minivan, but it is a short plane trip to Vientiane.
Xieng Khouang (Phonsavanh)is a dusty little town with not a lot to entice the visitor other than the heart-wrenching stories of the bombing of Laos (must visit the Mines Advisory Group shop in the main street).
However, around Phonsavanh there are many interesting places - the old city of Muang Khoun, the Hmong villages and the amazing Plain of Jars.
Not a lot to see & do apart from the Plain of Jars World Heritage site. With good timing one day there should be enough.
We weren't sure either to make the journey to Phonsavan, to be honest the town has a strange feel about it and the only things to do are the tours to the jars, villages, caves etc.
in hindsight we would give it a miss, it's 5-6hrs to get there from Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang and the tours are not worth what you have to pay, you spend most of the time in the minivan, the jars are no better than other sites/ruins, the "villages" are no different to others and the hot springs are nothing remarkable. Phonsavan appears to be trying to put itself on the backpacker map but for us it wasn't value for money. The real reason to go is if you're interested in learning about the work being done to clear unexplored bombs dropped during the war.
We went to Plains of Jars Site 1 only but we were told the rest of the sites are approximately the same.
Try to do some trekking into the forest and villages and the waterfalls are beautiful but beware of leeches.
