More about Hat Yai Central

Hat Yai is the most popular city in the south of Thailand, welcoming vacationing Malaysians and tourists on overland journeys between Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur. It’s the fourth-biggest city in Thailand, and it’s set inland from the area’s quiet beaches.

There was a time when hotels in Hat Yai saw large numbers of Western tourists, but now they’re outnumbered by visiting Malaysians. The exception is for international tourists based in Southern Thailand who need to extend their visa with a border run. They often stay a night in Hat Yai, then take the two-hour drive to the Malaysian border to renew their visa.

The Hat Yai Rail Station is a major stop along the Bangkok – Kuala Lumpur route. There are multiple arrivals daily. The cheapest accommodation in Hat Yai is found here around the train station, while more comfortable mid-range options are set back from the terminal.

The major attraction in Hat Yai is Hat Yai Nai temple, with its reclining Buddha, museum and mausoleum. Bullfights are a popular pastime with Thais who gamble on the outcome. These are held in a regular basis in the city center, and the front desks of hotels in Hat Yai can arrange tickets for tourists.
