Depends on who you are”
If you are an experienced world traveler, who is not put off by developing world standards, and not overly fussy, this works fine. I am hesitant to criticise the place much because of the very affordable price, and I felt I got fair value for my money. The photo on Agoda is not anywhere close to what you will get, but I was happy and slept well, and the staff was very nice to me and didn't try to sell me anything.

Are the photos the same hotel?”
Unfortunately, the picture of the fresh white bed and open window has nothing, zero, in common with the room we were given. Our windows opened onto filthy ventilation shafts filled with the trash of 100 years. The sheets and towels were ragged, the mattresses, pillows etc. grubby. The walls needed a clean and/or repaint. Smoke drifted in from reception. The bathroom mirror was attached to the wall with sticky tape. Damp and leaks threatened to bring down the bathroom ceiling. The entry to the hotel was filthy, strewn with litter and in an area that was closed to traffic for security reasons. Shops are nearby, it's possible to walk to the Nile and Egyptian museum. Not far from old Cairo. We had a much better experience staying in Giza. Fine for a cheap 1 night stay ( we were waiting for a train) otherwise, avoid. Wifi was just about OK. We didn't use the bath, it had chips cracks and holes. Breakfast was 1 mug of coffee, 2 bread rolls, 1 cheese triangle and a plastic pot of jam. Staff were sullen. Not the best. Such a shame. If they just cleaned up the entrance way, swept and washed the pavement outside, washed down the walls, tidied up the bed linen and welcomed guests with a little enthusiasm, this place would be fine and have a lot of old world character. I'm a professional traveller and travel blogger, I don't give bad reviews lightly.

Decent budget hotel”
The Hotel Royal is a good choice if you're looking for a budget hotel in downtown Cairo that is central to major attractions. Don't expect luxury and don't look too closely into the corners. Although the general areas are clean, the corners are grime- and dirt-filled. The wifi is slow and erratic. The basic breakfast is ok for one or two mornings. The friendly and helpful staff help make up for the hotel's shortcomings.

Bugs”
First, The location is good. It's in a good part of town near metros and some good dining and cafes. It's walkable to Tahrir SQ and the Egyptian Museum and Nile River. If you're brave enough, you can walk to Khan-el-Khalili and the Islamic Quarter as well. These points are the only reasons I would recommend this place to anyone. Second, The price is fine. Third, The staff. The lady who served us breakfast in the mornings was nice and kind. She is both of the stars given to the "Staff" category (2/5). Fourth, Cleanliness. Bugs: flies, gnats, mosquitoes whatever, we were bitten by them. Cigarette burned bedding. "why did you stay? or not complain?" you may ask; well, Cairo is a pretty awful city and we just decided to keep our heads down until our flight left so as not to have to run the gauntlet of scams and thieves in town while finding another accommodation/cancel our current one. Pro-tips: do not take part in the tour packages offered from the hotel, they're WILDLY overpriced and just unnecessary, you can do better on your own, and we did. $60 USD for 2 people for round trip to the pyramids via the hotel, or $20 by taxi? Final comments: Don't come to Cairo, but if you must, stay somewhere better.

A stopover in Cairo”
Location, service and food
We stayed here 2 nights (18/12/15) and (24/12/15). The reason we chose this hotel is the airport service they provide as on both nights our flights were late night flights. On the first night everything didn't go as planned. No airport pick-up. We had to pay LE 300 + tips for airport transfer. The taxi driver went round and round for an hour to find the hotel and obviously we had to pay extra for that. When we finally found the hotel there were no rooms for us despite our booking. So in the wee hour in the morning we had to walk to another nearby hotel but luckily this arrangement was done on the spot by the hotel. But when we arrived for our 2nd night (24/12/15) everything was in order becauseI had phoned the hotel earlier (from Luxor) to remind them about our arrival. No glitch this time.

Not bad by Cairo budget hotel standards”
Location, friendly staff, cheap
The other reviews give a fair reflection. Reasonably clean by local standards for this type of hotel. A little extra effort cleaning and minimal investment freshening up the bathrooms would go a long way to help realise the potential of this hotel's excellent location.

an ok hotel”
location, free wifi, clean beds
centrally located the hotel is in a random building staff was a bit pushy with trying to do tours free wifi clean beds clean shower/toilet. however, the toilet/shower wasn't in a separate room. glass separated the bed and toilet, and the ceilings were so high that the glass didnt go to the top, so you are not a solo traveler you will hear EVERYTHING the other person is doing in the toilet. i don't think i would stay here again.

nice to stay but no TV”
location and freindliness...
checking in and out is easy, free airport transfer is good too, but make sure tips to the driver.. easy to get food as there is kfc and mcd nearby if you want hygiene food, if ur stomach can bear not-so-hygiene food, you can try local food... the hotel tour also is good, they can arrange for you in cheap(around 35usd) for transportation, but again, this is tip country.on top of that you have to tip your driver-he even ask for the tip..he will start a good conversation to please you, then before reaching the destination-he will start a conversation about tip given to him before in order to get the tip from you...this is egypt culture-just beware..

good backpacker option in the heart of cairo”
central, friendly staff, cleanish
A nice little budget hotel run by some very friendly guys in a busy low-end cafe district behind the central bank - well positioned if you plan to spend time exploring downtown Cairo. They've made a valiant effort, and the rooms are half decent with a cupboard, wood floors, and a separate glassed-in bathroom cubicle. Poor finishing work, so lots of cracks, broken panels, misaligned doors, etc. Wifi works fine. The usual unsatisfying breakfast (crappy fino bread with jam & cheese triangle, omelet, yogurt, Lipton tea of coffee), served in your room if you like as there is not really a common area. The room came with free airport pickup, and the contracted driver - a very nice chap- was there on time and smiling. Lots of cafe noise at night, plus the incessant motor of a water pump, but the former dies down around 11 and it's quiet in the mornings. Like other budget hotels, the Hotel Royal has struggled due to the tourism slump since 2011. Their sister hotel is busier and priced accordingly.

Great Price, big clean room, high ceilings, big window
They could charge more and it would still be good value. As it is it is amazing value. The room was big, clean, comfortable, AC, big window, high ceilings. The staff were great, helpful and not pushy for their tours and services. Would stay again.
