A 5 star hotel experience”
We took the free shuttle bus from shimoda station to the hotel. From the first moment we arrived, we were struck by the friendliness of the staff. Everyone from the front desk to the bus driver, strived to make our experience there a pleasant one. Aya, the front desk manager communicated with us in fluent English, and patiently gave us all the information we needed. I was also pleased with the cleanliness of our room. The breakfast buffet (Japanese & western) is to die for! I love the variety of food available,e.g fresh sushi, etc.! The spa had a little outdoor pool with a lovely view of the ocean. It’s a little arduous getting to the nearby beach, which is down a flight of long winding steps from the outdoor pool (8mins walk) . The hotel is located quite a distance from the center of town (10-15 mins bus ride); but because of its location (atop a hill) , the panoramic view of the ocean from the garden area is breathtaking! All in all, we had an extremely enjoyable time!!
Service is commendable... very accommodating staff!”
5 Star-style reception in the hotel - very nice French-style ambience!
Beautiful ocean view”
I travelled with a friend and we stayed one night in an ocean front room with a fantastic view. The location is a bit out of the way and not really walking distance to the town and shops. We had dinner in the restaurant because we didn't want to venture out in the dark, but it was very expensive and the grilled fish didn't even come with soup or rice - we were still hungry afterwards. The onsen spa facility was very nice and I think summer would be best for swimming and walking around beach area. The room was very clean and comfortable and breakfast was good.
Staffs are very polite and helpful
Nice stay for a getaway”
Great service and breakfast. The location is actually pretty convenient - it is located up a hill, but the shuttle runs every half hour or so until just after 5pm. After that, you can easily catch a taxi from outside the train station back to the hotel for about 1000 yen.
Very nice sized rooml & excellent view from hotel!”
This is a very nice hotel with dining on-site and most excellent view of sea from the hotel. Our room was a nice size & very friendly staff. There is a shuttle bus to/from train station 9a-5:30 (ish) but close location to town if you wanted to walk or taxi. Beware- the walk home is uphill :-) but we didn't mind.
Great Hotel at a great location”
This was our second stay here and we have been very satisfied with the room and the service. The restaurant "Ma Cher Mer" had a very nice atmosphere and served a super delicious dinner. Morning buffet was also great with a large variety of tasty and healthy dishes. We reserved a rather compact room, but that was our choice, because we wanted to have a wonderful ocean view. The mattress was so comfy and good quality - and the hotel even arranged foam pillows for us ! The staff is very kind and helpful: we asked about a good Sushi restaurant for lunch on the day of our return, and the staff immediately knew a good place to go - and they even reserved it for us. We will definitely stay here again. We can recommend this hotel to everyone.
Pristine Hotel in a Beautiful location ”
I would definitely recommend this hotel to others. The facilities were immaculate and you could not beat the view from our room. The breakfast buffet was one of the best I’ve had here in Japan. The staff were courteous and were very helpful on their recommendations for places to eat dinner and recreational activities in the area. Good Job Tokyu Shimoda. I’ll be back for sure.
Lovely views & terrific staff”
Top-notch staff were very welcoming, and seemed to enjoy goofing around with my 4 year old son. The views were amazing, breakfast was expansive and yummy, and the pool quite nice, although only open 8am to 5pm. However, we went to Shimoda specifically for the beach. The 181 winding concrete steps down to the street, followed by a few minutes' walk to a tiny 'locals' beach covered in seaweed and broken glass and pottery, was very disappointing. Shuttle bus service ending at 6pm was also a bummer, but we caught a taxi from the main train station for ¥1000 (about $10).
Friendly staff, value for money”
The staff was nice and friendly. In particular, there was a bell-boy (who was actually more like a greeting manager) and he was very friendly and spoke OK English. The hotel was located in a nice environment, somewhat like on the top of a small hill. The sea was so blue and the palm trees gave a warm tropic feel. I later found that the hotel was already 50 years old and would be closed to receive a major indoor renovation coming autumn. For this price, it is rather a good deal. 'Tokyu' is always a reliable hotel brand name in Japan.
Beautiful View ”
nice comfortable stay. Had a sea-view room, which has excellent view. Nice walk down from hotel along the sea towards town, but quite a hike on the way back. Shuttle bus to Shimoda Station are not frequent and ends at 5.30pm. If you want to eat dinner in the Japanese Restaurant in the hotel, suggest to reserve in advance. Buffet breakfast is good. Onsen is nice, with one indoor and one outdoor. Front Desk staff can speak English, but those in Japanese Restaurant hardly speaks any English, though there is an English menu which is not very descriptive. Overall nice relaxing stay.
All staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly the shuttle bus drivers. The hotel is a little out of town but the shuttle service is good and there are some great little restaurants a short taxi ride away (around Perry Road) - the walk to the hotel is very steep - too much after dinner! Buffet breakfast is good with a mix of western and Japanese foods. Rooms are large and clean. We had a beautiful ocean view. Would definitely stay again.
Absolutely awesome. Miles above the competition. ”
I'm 35, Canadian, my girlfriend is 25, Japanese. The bed, and the room is big, clean, and comfortable. Prior to booking this room, I read the other reviews- and noted guests complaining about the age of the hotel. Let's not forget that some of the finest hotels in N.Y., for example, are more than 100 years old. Age of a hotel does not render it 'old' or unsavory. This place is top class for what it is. It is very clean. The service is top level (you're in Japan- its hard to find poor service- as long as you are respectful yourself, and don't act like a typical 'What do you mean you don't speak English!?' type foreigner. The view from the room- I felt like I was in Koh Samui, Thailand. You won't believe you're only a 3 hr local train ride from Tokyo. It looks tropical, exotic, and literally- like you're in one of the southern islands off the coast of Okinawa. Maybe even better (seriously). The hotel is very close to the city center (15 min walk through beautiful traditional Japanese countryside alleys, homes, temples, etc). Along the way you'll see gorgeous little shops, restaurants, etc. They provide a free shuttle every hour- but seriously- the area around the hotel is so cool, it'd be a waste not to walk. The onsen (hot traditional pool) is open until 1 am every day (even in low season), and it is outdoor, overlooking the incredible ocean view. TIP: If you are coming from Tokyo: take the ITO LINE back to Atami. Trust me on this. It only runs a few times a day, its a brown colored train. But it's a special line that runs directly along the coast, the entire way, from Shimoda to Atami (from there you can take another local train or Shinkansen back to Tokyo). The scenery on this 90 min train ride is the best I've ever seen in Japan on any train route. Believe me, if you take the Ito Line back to Atami- it'll be one of the most memorable and romantic train rides you've taken in Japan. ;)
Lovely hotel but no way drive from Tokyo”
Very excite to the room with Pacific Ocean view. Outdoor onsen is excellent and the most impressive is seeing sun rise during outdoor onsen in the early morning at 6:00am. It is a bit to rush to stay only one night, better to have a good rest with 2 nights next time.
Perfect! Everything’s just perfect. ”
I don’t think we will book any other hotels when we are in Shimoda. Everythig is just perfect: friendly staff, rooms are very clean, the buffet breakfast is so so so good and the last but not the least, the outdoor onsen would wow you. This was our second time staying with Tokyu hotel, and we will for sure go back to this hotel again.
Perched up high the hotel has commanding, breathtaking views up & down the coast. Hotel staff were very helpful in making a restaurant booking for us for Saturday night & helped negotiate with a taxi driver a visit to a surf beach about 15 minutes away. Shuttle bus was also great.
very quiet place, wonderful sea view and all staffs are very kind, breakfast is good. Shimoda is a very interesting town, worth to visit again.
Beautiful location with fantastic views. Staff were very attentive and answered all questions. Onsen was lovely, especially the outdoor area.
That magnificent view ”
The hotel is located high on a headland overlooking the southern end of Shimoda Bay. The hotel is older but lovingly cared for and renovated with a large pool and good Onsen facilities. The rooms are very large, by any standard but particularly for Japan and these, along with the view, give you a real feeling of being on holiday. The buffet breakfast is superb with a wide range of Japanese and western style offerings, and also, wine. Because you are on holiday. Apparently. In any case I was driving each day so could not indulge but I did love the idea! It was great to stay in a hotel used largely by Japanese people exploring their own country as we got a feel for what the typical Japanese holidaymaker experiences when visiting the beach - as you might expect, comfort, hospitality and sophistication are all present in abundance. I highly recommend the hotel.
A beautiful hotel. There was a mixup with Agoda and our seaview room didn't get booked. It took the hotel quite some time to sort it out for us, but when they did they really came through for us with an upgraded seaview suite. The hotel is up on a hill, but there is free transfer into the town. We chose to walk down the hill and walk along the ocean into town. It's not far and a really lovely walk. An easy/cheap taxi ride back to the hotel at the end of the night. Beautiful hotel and helpful service.
