We have stayed at the Imperial lots of time over the past 15 years. We used to stay all inclusive in a family room, which was great with 2 boys. This was a flying visit but I got a good deal on the room for just one night. It’s always nice to chill in the sauna & jacuzzi & have a swim in the pool. As always the staff are lovely with a warm welcome from Chris & Monica who have looked after us in the restaurant for years.
We were upgraded to the Honeymoon Suite!”
For an overnight stay to break our journey we booked into the Imperial. My partner had a fond memory of visiting the hotel as a child 40 years ago and was curious to see it again. She was not disappointed. Although the building isn't the prettiest from outside it still retains its splendour once through the doors. At reception we were told that we had been upgraded to the honeymoon suite for no particular reason except that the hotel liked to do that occasionally! Room 110 is fantastic! The bedroom has a four poster bed and patio doors leading onto a balcony with a view of the sea; the bathroom with deep bath and separate shower; then comes the living room with patio doors on two sides. One leads out onto your own private sun terrace with lounge beds facing the sea, the other leads out onto a long balcony with the most spectacular panoramic views over the sea. It was more than we could have hoped for. So we decided to really enjoy the luxury of it all and pay a £5.00 surcharge to enjoy supper in our suite. The room service menu is very good. Our meal of grilled salmon steaks and superfoods salad - delicious and was about £13.00 each although we did push the boat out and order a bottle of fizz too. Throughout our visit the staff were fantastic and we would definitely visit again.
After checking in and arriving at our designated room we were very disappointed. We had started a tab to use the room service however the phone in our room didn't work. The wallpaper was hanging off in various places around the room, the carpet had not been hoovered and the bathroom was not somewhere we felt comfortable showering. We did take these complaints to the manager, who in turn was excellent and she gave us another room. This room was great, clean, gorgeous views of the sea and worth the amount we had paid. The staff at The Imperial were fantastic, very polite and helpful. We ordered breakfast to our room in the morning which arrived on time in accordance with the timescale we selected and it was delicious. The robes and slippers available in our room were a lovely added extra touch. The entrance to this hotel is absolutely stunning, however I do believe the hotel rooms require some tlc. The facilities here were great, we used the swimming pool, sauna and jacuzzi and there is a beauty room/spa treatments available too. The swimming area too could benefit from some updating. Overall, we had a lovely nights stay here and we would return in the future.
Good and bad”
A much anticipated stay was spoiled by faults and mistakes: wrong, broken beds, dirty toilet, shabby furniture/furnishings, dirty balcony and indifferent treatment at reception. I understand that this particular room (mezzanine level) is due for refurbishment - that may help the accommodation begin to come up to the standard of the hotel's view and location. house-keeping is a star - if there is ever a next time, we hope it's on her floor! Any issues mentioned here have been communicated to management and we are awaiting a response.
Lovey hotel, but in need of some updating”
Lovely. We have stayed here twice now. Very close to the centre. I cannot comment on the evening meals as we did not eat here, but a superb breakfast. It is just starting to look a bit dated, so could do with a refurb. But would definitely stay here again
Overall it was a very enjoyable stay, lovely room with beautiful views. It was good to have the Games room but in the Snooker room there was no information as to where you get the balls and cues. Pity you have to pay parking charges on top of the room price.
The stay was average but the rooms left a lot to be desired they are looking tired and there was a lack of attention to cleanliness there were stains on wall tiles and mirrors, wardrobes didn't close correctly, tile grouting was dirty in the bathroom We have been staying at the Imperial for several years with satisfaction but the standards are such that we will now review our opinion. We have already booked for a break between Christmas and the New Year but unless things have improved never again
Great Staying experience
Great views. Good surroundings. Reception staff ex”
Reception staff (Mia & Andy) where excellent and a good advert for the hotel. Food well presented. The room we had (147) was clean, tidy, large and uninterrupted views over the bay.
Lovely stay, good food & service. Great views.”
Great Views and Location”
Enjoyed the stay very much, great fitness centre, awesome views and very large room. Balcony overlooking the bay with sea views.
Agatha Christie country”
My wife and I are fans of Agatha Christie, so we wanted to visit the town where she was born and the hotel mentioned in several of her books. And we were not disappointed: the Imperial was within walking distance of all the major Christie sites, including the Torquay Museum. We had tea on the beautiful terrace overlooking the bay just as Miss Marple did. We loved the quiet simple elegance of the Imperial and could not help noticing how many other people there were clearly enjoying themselves too.
Unfortunately, there was a 24hr long party (with band & disco) going on in a property behind the hotel which kept most of us with rooms at the rear, awake until 4.30am. It apparently happens from time to time. Night porter most helpful but couldn't do anything about it. Also, on last morning, there was no hot water in our room for showering and shaving. Apart from that, though, the stay was most pleasant.
Parking charges are way too high, with no clear indications about the rate. A sheltered parking is £15 per night
Our stay was excellent. We booked two standard rooms but was upgraded to deluxe, sea views, balcony, excellent bathroom. The facilities were great and the staff were very friendly. We didn't dine there so cannot comment on that but the breakfast was great and the staff were very helpful and attentive.
very nice hotel”
exceptional hotel for money, views are breathtaking, yes decor is a little dated but this adds to the charm.informative friendly staff, only comment is signage/directions to hotel could be a little clearer.spa very good again could use a little updating
great location and superb service stunning view”
Offered upgrade to sea view room, late check out. Attentive helpful staff who were professional and knowledgable about the area. The gardens are well maintained and I was impressed with the beautiful outside heated swimming pool and decking sitting out area. Some of the areas of the hotel need refurbishing./restyling but this did not spoil my stay. Good car parking and short walk into town.
Good service but the hotel's faded.”
Good points as above, but the hotel feels faded and fading. The bed was soft and saggy; floorboards sagged and creaked; most of the furniture needed refurbishing or replacing. Great views from the bedroom, but not a good place to sleep at all. The outdoor pool and terraces also closed in the evenings despite lovely sunny weather and swimmers wanting to stay in.
Lovely Hotel, excellent views”
Our stay from the first moment was met with a very friendly welcome, staff were lovely. Hotel was grand but could do with a little touch up around the hotel ie paint walls etc otherwise lovely stay.
Booked this for the wife and her sister for a 3 day mid week break (all in with breakfast no treatments). They loved every minute of it, the rooms are always tidy even though the rooms do need a little updating.Facilities were brill and to eat your breakfast looking over the harbour was fantastic. 2 miute walk to the harbour. Please note it is a day to park at the hotel.
