I rarely write review, but this ryokan is deserved to be known. This is the best ryokan that i have stayed so far. Attention to detail, great facility, and very kind and helpful staff. The view from river view suite was very astonishing and the kaiseki dinner was delightful . Will definitely come back again in the future.
We had a wonderful stay here for one night. Don't get me wrong - it's expensive. But the staff could not have been kinder, the dinner and breakfast were both a wonderful experience, and the rooms felt as traditional as we could get. We loved this part of our trip to Japan!
Disappointed Kaiseki Dinners ”
In view of the high value charged per night to include both Kaiseki dinner and breakfast either in Japanese or Western style, it is not worth every penny. The Kaiseki dinners were just OK, the taste of the food was just normal. Kaiseki dinner should be presentable (which is OK) but the taste should be much much better when reflecting to the price of stay but it isn't at all. Some of the food was not very hot and one of the night even had a missing course (should be served half way of the meal) which came very late near the end of the dinner. For foreigners who have little experience in Kaiseki dinner might find it very interesting and tasty. With lot of experiences in enjoying Kaiseki dinner all over Japan, this is the last one in the list especially taking into account of the pricey stay. The open air hot spring facility for man always have mosquitoes in daytime and at night. Perhaps if the temperature is much colder (below 10C), there might be less or none.
Everything is excellant.
Expensive but Excellent!”
The location is very good, near site seeing locations and easy to find, but not too close to JR. The room is very traditional Japanese Style, staff are polite and one of them could speak Cantonese. Our package included dinner and breakfast. The dinner was good, served with a staff in your own room. The breakfast was excellent, the staff would guide you to a room and only 3 rooms guests would have breakfast at the same time. The room scene was super nice river view. You can select Japanese or Western style breakfast, both were good. You could have your own toaster if you chose Western! We enjoyed the public hot spring, indoor and outdoor both available. It was not crowded, we enjoyed the hot spring alone. Private hot spring is also available with extra fee. In the room you could dress up in Japanese pajamas. A small bag and hair band would be given.
Held up to the high standard of traditional japanese ryokan. In-house breakfast and dinner were superbly prepared that give us an authentic and rich feel of local flavour. Public Bath is also a pleasant experience as the ryokan is not crowded. Overall a great experience, but slightly costly though.
One of the best Hotel we stayed in Japan during our CNY Trip with every amenities n service provided all top notch. Unbeatable location and definitely would opt to return and stay at this property again
Refind Japnese Beauty we are familiar to .”
I visited this area many times ,but this was the 1st stay. I found the silent river soothing my feeling in front of the ryokan which sometimes turned raged and was in danger of flood. Early in the morning some people strolled alone others walked with their dog, and some birds siwmmimg on the river which reminded me of Ukai , u ,birds swallowing fish and being made to vomit and ushou, fisherman. The hills over the river would have attracted me if it were late fall. I enjoyed typical Japanese air and everyday life in Arashiyama.
i love this hotel”
the location of this hotel is amazing, the hotel has private outdoor onsen, that i can look at the beautiful peak of arashiyama and enjoy my hot bath with summer wind breeze. food is great, they hired Taiwan and HK staff to help international asian guests, i think that is fantastic.
Excellent location ”
Perfect location, very clean, excellent services, enjoyed the tranquility there. Food and Onsen are lower than my expectation, room is rather small. Overall it is a very traditional high quality hotel.
Hotel and room are very clean in a traditional setting. Room is facing the river and hill with magnificent view. Excellent Japanese food served inside room (dinner). Though expensive, it is all worth it!
Good but very pricey experience”
The location is perfect, right across the river and within walking distance of tourist spots, shopping and restaurant. Based from reviews, I was expecting red carpet treatment but I didn't get that from the welcoming committee, it felt stiff. I had more luck with the servers coming to our room for the warm welcome.
Very Nice Japanese Traditional Accommodation ”
It was an excellent experience staying at Benkei. Staff is super nice and make you feel like back to home. Welcome board & greetings in the room, dinner & breakfast are very surprised and feel warm in this stay. Place is clean and big enough. Traditional Japanese food and breakfast is good to experience as well. Highly recommend to my families and my friends.
Absolutely fantastic ryokan stay in Arashiyama!”
My stay in Aarashiyama Benkei Ryokan was absolutely perfect!! The ryokan is a 15 min walk from JR Saga-Arashiyama Station. On reaching the ryokan, my name was displayed on a chalk board outside the main door, nice touch! The ryokan was situated RIGHT next to the river and a 2 min walk from Togetsu Bridge. The staff alsowiped our luggages clean and actually tied on small decorative notes. Such attention to detail, very sweet! On checking into our 12-tatami room with half board (incl dinner and breakfast) on the first floor, we were absolutely wow-ed. The room was very spacious for 2 (can fit 4) and had a wall-to-floor glass door with a small garden outside. The indoor onsen was essentially a small bathtub that can barely fit two regular-sized people, so don't expect much. We paid 2100Y for a 45-min soak in the private outdoor onsen and it was wonderful. Fits two with lots of room. Dinner was served in our room, course-by-course. Each course was so delicate and delicious. When we were done eating, the staff proceeded with setting up our super comfy futons! The yukatas (Jap casual kimonos/bathrobes) came with inner pieces (4 sizes provided), and outer pieces in 4 different colors! Breakfast was served in the dining room, which only had 2 tables, each by the window, with a view of the river. Needless to say, breakfast was also very enjoyable and sumptuous. I didn't try the public baths, but the outdoor one looked really great too! There was also a free-to-use massage chair that really hit the spot on my back. Check-in and check-out was totally hassle-free. I only produced my booking in softcopy during check-in, and paid my extra charges on check-out. That was all. I really loved this place. The staff were attentive and also watched us for a good 2 min as we made our way out, making us feel really cherished as guests. Though this place was slightly more expensive in my opinion (about 50,000 Y), I will definitely recommend this place to EVERYONE!
We stayed just one night in the self-service western style room (which included a private onsen) as part of our honeymoon, and even during such a brief stay which skipped some of the ryokan's most distinctive features that other reviewers can comment on (such as the meals and attentive service), we had such a lovely time at the hotel. The private bath was super fun and relaxing...we ended up dipping in it 3 times in that one day. Also, the room was incredibly spacious, definitely bigger than what we expected and more than enough for 2 people. The location was very convenient. On the morning of check out we walked right next door to % arabica and had a nice cup of coffee overlooking the river. Definitely a splurge for us, but 100% worth it and a highlight of our trip to Japan
A great escape”
A beautiful and comfortable facility in the perfect location to absorb the beauty of Kyoto nature. We stayed in a JR suite for a night while stopping through town and found everything about it thoughtful and comfortable. From the in suite hot tub to the delightful bed and Japanese pajamas, our stay was ideal and worth the cost.
Beautiful historical stay”
My fiancee and I had the privilege to spend one night in this beautiful Japanese inn, also known as a ryokan. The service was exceptional, and we were able to store our luggage before check in so that we had a chance to explore the area without the obstacle of carrying our luggage around. The building overlooks the river and mountains, giving our hotel room an indescribably memorable view. The private onsen is well worth its price. Everything you'd want to see in Arashiyama is within walking distance, including but not limited to: the bamboo grove and monkey park. I can't comment on their meals since we did not choose to eat at the inn. I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you want a memorable opportunity to stay in a traditional ryokan.
Beautiful little hotel”
We stayed in a villa. It was just the right size with all amenities provided. Very clean. The bathroom was excellent . Close to town and attractions. Lovely staff. Highly recommend this hotel.
We have wonderful time in Benki, the hot spring is nice, great breakfast and dinner with great service. just one confuse point, i.e. when I booked on agoda web page, it shows that our room is free for 0~4 kids, however, when I arrive the hotel, they still need to charge both kids, although one is only 3years old. one more thing, the facility is a bit old, need to refresh, e.g. the roof of private hotspring in the room, very old and I think i can see the spider net on the roof!
It's a super nice Japanese Ryokan with hot spring located just along the riverside and foot of Arashiyama with a nice view from the dining room. Staff are also approachable, nice and can speak different languages. Service is supreme. Def a good place to relax and enjoy the hot spring and the nice view at Arashiyama
