“Beautiful Hotel, Rough Area, Rooms Have Minor Issues”
The hotel is near many of the major tourist attractions, walking distance from the old city and Albert Hall Museum, but it’s down a long alley my driver told me never to walk down at night. The Main Street at the end of the alley might be a bit scary to traverse for those uninitiated to India’s pedestrian quirks. But there are usually tuktuk drivers right outside the hotel, and some of them are pretty honest. The grounds are lovely, the pool is very nice, and the building definitely has a classic mansion type feel. Given its conversion to a hotel, they did great work with it. But the rooms are anything but soundproof, the harsh hallway light bleeds right through the thin curtains, and every lightbulb in the place is the harshest pharmacy-like bright white lights. I had to put a shirt over my table lamp just to get some decent light. I went in January, which got rather cold at night - the heater provided in the room was woefully inadequate for the job, but after a few hours of scrambling, the staff managed to get me a more powerful heater. Lastly, the showers are incredibly finicky, and the slightest adjustment will make the water scalding or freezing, and finding a middle ground is fairly challenging. The restaurant was a bit pricey, but the food was decent. Definitely better to go find food outside the hotel, but it’s perfectly serviceable. 100Rs for chai, or 800 for the breakfast buffet are certainly more than you’d pay at a nearby Dhaba, but you’re definitely paying for the convenience. The laundry service was good, my clothes came back later in the evening, and everything was in good shape. The staff are warm and friendly, and a big shout out to Wilson, who’s a real gem.
