The pictures in Agoda looked like a very warm and welcoming place and indeed, the area is very nice when you walk in.

If you stay at Fern Resort I really recommend you to do the hiking tour with the local guides (dogs from the resort).

We booked through Agoda at 1500 baht per night and were upgraded to a suite on arrival. Peace and tranquillity resonated throughout our stay at Fern Resort. Our cabin was spacious, clean and bright and we loved the rear balcony that looked out into the jungle where we sat and relaxed each evening with a cold drink listening to the sounds of nature. The room was adequately furnished and contained a very large double bed that gave a good nights sleep. Facilities were also available to make a cuppa but note that there are no televisions or fridges in these cabins and also no safety deposit boxes. Complimentary WIFI is available but we did not make use of it. There is a lovely pool on site just across from the restaurant where we went each morning for breakfast. I would describe the breakfast provided as adequate, eggs cooked to your preference with small sausages, pressed ham and toast. Cereals and fruit are also provided. We had dinner in the restaurant one evening and the food was excellent; a dish we highly recommend to try is the northern Thai (Shan) curry, it was delicious. It must be noted that there are five dogs who roam the resort and they like to hang around the restaurant area in particular. This won't be to everyones liking but we loved them all, Nin, Puy, Numtan, Dum and the little cutie Snow White! If you have an aversion to dogs or don't like them around your feet when having a meal then you had better book elsewhere. These dogs are also provided to customers who wish to go on the jungle treks outside the resort. Fern also provides a free return shuttle going into Mae Hong Son three times a day at scheduled times. If you want to make use of their transport outside of these times then it will cost 200 baht. The staff at the resort were friendly enough and they will happily provide you with information on day trips.we are very happy to recommend the Fern Resort to fellow travellers.
A Fine Place to Stay”
I enjoyed my stay at the Fern Resort. In wish I could have stayed longer. The food was good, and even better kitchen existed in the Fern Restaurant in Mae Hong Son to which the resort provided a free shuttle service. The staff were friendly, attentive and gave a good level of service. The accommodation was good, the cottages arranger around the pool or arranger around streams and garden like rice paddies. The resort dogs provided a guide service to take guests on walks. We were adopted by a simply excellent dog or possibly companion animal called "Lost" in Thai who had an excellent temperament, impeccable manners and exhibited a high level of canine intelligence. All the resort dogs were gentle, well behaved and quiet. I would happi;y stay there again.
Fern Resort - a rural idyl”
I chose to stay out of town, and picked the Fern Resort from the half dozen or so options. On reaching Mae Hong Son airport I phoned for a shuttle bus and it was there within 15 minutes. The resort is a complex of simple wooden buildings all blending in harmoniously into the lush greenery that is the hallmark of this resort. Check-in was swiftly accomplished and within minutes I was taken to my simply furnished hut with balconies to front and rear. The bed was fine with a good hard mattress and sheets that smelled very fresh. Sitting on the front balcony with rice fields immediately in front and a small wooded hill rising up in the background, I knew I had made the right choice. The swimming pool was of a decent size, and being unheated, it was somewhat breathtaking for the first minute or so, but then wonderfully refreshing. Drinks were available from the adjacent bar, and the restaurant was a few steps further on. There is another bar at the far end of the estate, perfectly situated for sunset - a couple of margueritas there as the sun went down and all problems seemed to fade away into the crimson haze. Breakfast offered more than I had expected given the simplicty of the resort, and was deightful to eat to the sound of the bamboo water shutes clunking rythmically. All in all, wonderfully relaxing, and I look forward to returning as soon as I can.
Amazing setting 7 km out of mae hong son”
This place was extremely difficult to leave - set up in the middle of rice fields with lovely rooms just outside mae hong son. Swimming pool was great, people were lovely. If you want night life that does not consist of drinks whilst watching the sun go down looking over rice fields and the sound of frogs and crickets - do not come here. But if you want to a slice of heaven within easy reach of the town and other attractions, this is the place ! Nature walks are right behind the resort - we started to do the 2 hour one but ended up doing the 4 it was so nice - an extra plus it was just the 3 of us and our guides are the hotel dogs ! Cannot imagine wanting to stay anywhere else within the city comfines.
The Fern Resort is a hideaway outside the town of Mae Hong Son. It is situated a,one the rice paddies and is surrounded by natural plants and wildlife. The rooms are a good size and are adequately furnished. It was quite a walk form our room to the restaurant and the pool, which would not be good for people with difficulty walking. The restaurant food was very tasty and the service good. There is a hiking trail on the property which offers a two or a four hour hike. The distance to the town itself is about 6 kilometers and a shuttle service is provided but following a schedule. I think the resort offers a better staying experience than one would find in the town.
A wonderful find”
I was intrigued by what I'd read about the Fern.My first night in Mae Hong Son was at another entirely forgettable establishment( same price as the Fern). I'm so glad I decided to try again the next day. I then had 3 wonderful, tranquil, peaceful days exploring this amazing area and the charms of this resort. It is a long way from anywhere, but well worth the journey.
Exotic location ”
Spent three nights here and felt it was the best location we could have chosen, even after having scouted Mae Hong son. Its a beautiful town and area, but there aren't a lot of accomodations. That being said, there are few things you need to remember to make this successful. Bring a sweater... it's chilly in the morning, although it gets hot by noon. Also, the rooms are quite shady so they can be a bit on the cool side. The resort is on a rice paddy, which makes it very atmospheric --but there will be a few bugs. Make sure you take the time for a sunset drink on the rice terrace. It's unforgettable.
a great resort! the pictures on the website can't describe well enough how beautiful the place is. with the rice fields and the water flowing through. they even built a new infinity pool. the location is 15 minuets drive from mae hong son, but they have shuttels to town. the only thing that can be improved is the food which was a bit average. the resort is located just inside the jungle - which was fantastic for us, but if you are not a fan of jungle sound and animals then you might not have so much fun as we did.
fern restort, mae hong son”
Fantastic hotel, with super-friendly and helpful staff. The hotel offers charming and clean eco bungalows in a jungle setting near the town of Mae Hong Son. The ambience of the hotel is fantastic and the food is highly recommended, as they also run the Fern Restaurant in town.
the resort is set among gorgeous rice paddies and beautifully laid out. the shan style huts are luxurious - best of all, we were upgraded upon arrival! location is great, just outside mae hong son town and very near a trail to the mae surin national park. only complaint is that the restaurant is rather expensive and the food so-so. otherwise, we had a wonderful stay and would definitely recommend to others!
I can recomend this place to anyone who wants a peaceful vacation . The grounds are beautiful and the rooms are very comfortable .There is a nice pool and a lovely restaurant that serves very good Thai and Western Food . It is quite a distance from Mae Hong Son , but there are 3 free transfers to and from the resort to the town centre .One of the best resorts i have stayed at 1 I would love to return ....
Perfect place in a perfect setting”
We checked in with 10pax in 5 rooms and it is a goergeous place, lovely bungalows. a wonderful warm service, great breakfast in a breathtaking setting between ricepaddies and mountains. It's neccessary to have own transportation if you want to take a stroll around town, its 7 km out of Mae Hong Son
This resort is on beautiful grounds just outside of Mae Hong Son. Staff are friendly and helpful and I would strongly recommend visiting the view which is a rough ride uphill but the sign says 7 km away. We were on scooters. Definitely recommend staying.
Relaxing hotel, great as a base for mae hong son”
Fern resort is a great base to explore mae hong son. just a few kilometres outside the town (you can get the hotel shuttle, or rent a scooter from town) it very tranquil and relaxing. The nature walk on the doorstep is a ggod way to spend a few hours.
This is probably the best place to stay in Mae Hong Son. Loved being in the middle of nature, taking the short nature hike behind the hotel, and relaxing by the pool. The staff were very friendly as well. Having said that, as a solo traveler without my own transport I did feel a little isolated-- did not see other solo travelers at the hotel. There was a shuttle into town but it only ran at odd times. The staff did not speak English very well and did not advise on tours I could take, although I probably could have found some in town. The setting was also a bit rustic. All in all, I would recommend this to couples who want to spend a few days in nature or for people who want to relax in a jungle-like setting. If you have your own transport there is also a lot to see in the area.
Relaxing and Relaxing”
A wonderful weekend. After driving from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son, the Fern Resort was a great destination.
Absolutely fantastic and memorable stay ”
Highly recommend to all who want a bit of relaxation time in nature. Beautiful rooms and grounds and lovely staff. Really enjoyed our stay. It is a couple of kms from the city, but there didn't seem like much in Mae Hong Son anyway.
Lovely resort between forest and rice fields”
the resort is located around 10 minutes from mae hong son. the area is verly lovely with its bungalows in the forest and on the side of the rice fields. the deluxe bungalow is large and has a balcony. there is no television or any other electric staff in the room except a air condition. that was perfect for us than it would disturb the silence of the resort. the room was clean, the bed unfortunately a bit hard. the swimming pool looks a bit old and is not so clean. however, it was still ok for a swimm. it is very nice to enjoy sunset in there bar at the top of the rice fields. the breakfast was good and rich.
Beautiful resort ”
A very nice nature resort. We only stayed for 1 night on our Mae Hong Son loop bike ride. Staff are very attentive and the villas are super clean. Set in a very serene spot, surrounded by nature. The best place around!
Beautiful location, very good service”
we found the fern resort a very relaxing place. the lush green shrubs and trees and the little stream running along the resort added to the owerall atmosphere. the staff were very helpful and polite. the shuttle to town was very convenient. our suite bungalow was spacious and clean, from balcony we could watch the sunset ower rice fields. we ate at the resort's restaurant every evening. the food was excellent and served with a smile. the wi-fi worked well around reception and in the restaurant. we went for a short walk with one of those friendly dogs, he certainly knew the way! the long (4 hours)walk was worth doing, although we would describe is a trek, and no easy - rather moderatly difficult (we are fit and used to trekking). we would like to come back to fern resort in the future and certainly will recommend it to our friends.
