Highly recommended. Good value for money.”
Great First Cabin as advertised. Highly recommended for young and old thrifty traveller, do-it-yourself traveller and last minute booking challenge. The place is safe and secure, clean and in order and quiet on the floor where you sleep. Breakfast reservation required. English communication with the staff was excellent. The staff was cooperative and accommodating and trying there best. The location has quick access to local Shoji Station subway and the main Kyoto Station and the local bus. The area is surrounded with a variety of restaurants, shops of all kinds and services for example the banks, ATMs, bike rentals, massage, organic food etc. And yet despite the hustle and bustle, it is isolated from traffic and noise. The First Cabin Kyoto is not suitable for families with young children or people with mobility challenge. Come and see Kyoto with First Cabin Kyoto-Karasuma you will be quite surprise. My experience with First Cabin Kyoto-Karasuma was so good that when I went to Tokyo on a short notice, I made a reservation to First Cabin Tokyo-Tsukiji again. Now, I just wish they have First Cabin Sapporo!
Excellent location, friendly staff, clean bed”
First cabin is very suitable for solo travellers looking for affordable and clean hotel stay. It is 1 min walk away from the Shijo station (exit 5) and approximately 15 slow walk to kyoto station. Kawaramachi and karasuma is walkable from the hotel as well, though it will take at least 30 mins. The walk will take you through the shopping streets. The hotel room is clean and comfortable. If you have large luggages, do opt for the bigger rooms. There is a security locked cabinet beside the bed to store valuables. There is ample space to put my backpack and hand carry luggage on the bed. Rooms is segregated according to gender and I felt very safe throughout my stay. There is a ladies-only floor where the female rooms are located. Will definitely be staying at First cabin again!!

I wanted to stay at a capsule hotel atleast once during my trip to Japan, but i was struggling to find one for women. Luckily i found the first cabin kyoto-karasuma, which offered a women only floor to experience the truely japanese capsule cabin. The bathrooms were amazing with everything a female traveller could want - High pressure showers, lots of mirrors, fancy facewashes and great lighting. Obviously staying in a capsule is not the same as having your own room, but if you aren't a light sleeper you should have no issues.
Nice concept hotel in a good location”
The hotel is located about a minutes walk from Shijo Station (Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line) if you take exit 5. When you come out of the exit, take a left turn and an immediate left into the street and you will see the first cabin sign. Exploring Kyoto and accessing Kyoto station is also very easy as its along major bus routes and only 2 subway stops from Kyoto. I stayed in a first class cabin and it was very spacious and other guests were very considerate so i had no disturbances at night during my four night stay. All in all, I had a great experience at first cabin and will recommend it to anyone who is considering staying in a capsule but wants to be able to stand up in one. But definitely worth paying a little extra for the first class cabin.
Nice hotel with great location.”
I stayed in first cabin Osaka before and enjoyed my stay there, so is with First Cabin Kyoto. Both are similar in design of rooms which are comfortable to stay in. The hotels have very good facilities like shower rooms and very nice grooming room which you can use after shower. The location is great too, near Karasuma station which the station on the intersection of two main railway and subway line in Kyoto.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone going to Kyoto! My stay was welcoming, comfortable, and pleasant. I will definitely revisit this hotel some day. I found the staff really helpful and friendly. For those who have not stayed at a capsule hotel before, they should really consider staying at First Cabin Kyoto-Karasuma.
I stay at the First Cabin Kyoto - karasuma for two days. The hotel is located next to Shijo subway station and 5 mins walk from Karasuma subway which link to train to Osaka. It is also very near the main bus stop which is easy access to all the place of interest in Kyoto. Hence transportation is not a problem. It is also located near the main shopping street, good for those who like to shop. Access to most of the sightseeing is only between 15-30 mins bus trip. There are also a few restaurant within 5 mins walk from the hotel open till 2300 hrs. A copy of them even operate till 0100hrs. Shijo subway is only one stop to Kyoto station which you can access to any part of Japan from Kyoto station. Kyoto is a city that a lot of the traditional house are still well kept. It is comfortable to event just walk along the small street and feel the peaceful and quite moment of the city. This is what I like about Kyoto.
All capsule hotels should be like this!”
I had heard about the big capsule hotel concept of First Cabin on the internet and had to try it out. Got a great deal with Agoda and really enjoyed my single night stay at First Cabin. It's still a new hotel, so everything looks great and is clean. Cabins also have lockers under the beds so you can still keep your belongings safe despite the cabin not having a door (only a curtain, magnetically fixed). The only unfortunate thing is you can't control the kind of neighbours you have in adjacent or opposite cabins. If you find you get a very noisy or loud neighbour, I'd advise to ask the staff if you can be swapped to a different cabin where possible. Other than that, First Cabin has taken the capsule hotel to the next level. The only thing that would make this truly amazing is if it had spa and sauna facilities like some other capsule hotels I've been to.
An absolute gem for no-hassle traveller”
I had a wonderful time with First Cabin, although I did leave early and returned late daily. The location itself is an absolute dream. Right outside the Shijo station on the main JR line (exit 5), it makes getting anywhere a breeze. Great eateries along and around the street. (Generally good eats in Kyoto anyway) The hotel itself has vending machines for cup noodles and drinks, a coin laundry and even a small area for professional massage. The breakfast area is simple and the wifi is fantastic! The cabin area is kept very quiet and most guests are respectful of that but be warned that packing and unpacking of bags can be noisy. Plastic bags of purchases are especially loud, as well as guest with particularly heavy foot steps and snores. Otherwise it is a really comfortable space. Probably not possible to have guests in the cabin area and any kind of talking in the cabin area is just really annoying for everyone. There is enough space in the first class cabin to open and work with a medium sized luggage, but I would imagine that would not be possible in the smaller cabins. Due to laws governing this class of accommodation in Japan, they are not allowed to install locks on the doors, so I pack everything deposit the luggage at the reception every morning. There is a small drawer with a number lock which I found to be very reliable and safe. The shower facilities are well-maintained and stocked with shampoo, conditioner and body soap. Disposable razors are also available as well as hand and face foam wash, toothbrush and toothpaste. The service staff is available 24hrs and are always polite, helpful and are all able to speak English if you're like me and too lazy to pick up Japanese. This is not for everyone (i.e. families) but consider staying here if you need nothing more than a bed at night, but time your schedule properly as they have a late check in time of 3pm and an early check out time of 10am, with nominal charges for extra hours.
Value for money”
I've stayed in first cabin Tsujiki (Tokyo) and the kyoto-karaduma and it's a great concept , make sure to choose first class cabin , it's worth it ! The only negative thing about the karasuma is that at times the heating was too high .
First Cabin Kyoto Hotel, Great value for money”
The hotel was rather easy to find and the check in & check out process was fast and efficient. The hotel is situated rather close to Shijo Station (about a 5mins walk) which makes it excellent for moving about. Stay was pleasant with very courteous staff, their command of English was sufficient to get things done and sorted out. The amenities provided were adequate, a very easy to use washing machine (with a locking mechanism, such that only you can access the machine and preventing others from messing with your laundry). Room cleaning was also provided everyday along with a fresh set of towels, disposable toothbrush and a set of clothes for moving about the hotel which is very convenient. Body Soap, Shampoo and Conditioner is provided in the Shower room and Soap, Shaving Cream and disposable shavers are provided in the public dressing room. Security was good, a side locker for the First Class Cabin which allowed me to put quite a number of things inside. Upkeep of the place was in tip top condition and the Hotel was very neat and tidy. Would definitely recommend for Solo Travellers. . Would definitely go back to First Cabin if I am in the area. 10/10 recommend to any travellers out there looking for a superb accommodation with low cost.
A great place to stay”
Interesting concept of cabin. Nice design, everything is clean. Showers are private and have shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. You will find in your cabin a face towel, a body towel, a pajama and slippers. I stayed for two nights in a first class cabin, it has enough room and feels comfortable, there is a drawer under the bed that can be locked and where you store your things. The only thing that separates your cabin from the corridor is a curtain, but you still have enough privacy and it's not noisy. It's really close to the Shijo station of the Kyoto Subway and not too far from Gion and Sanjo. I would stay here again and highly recommend it.
Very clean, very quiet- definitely not a hostel”
This is a great budget but business hotel. If I went back to Kyoto as a backpacker, I would not stay here. And hence my rating of 5 above. The rooms are very very quiet and the walls separating the cabin are thin. Not only is it not allowed to speak on the phone, I was guilty each time I unzipped my backpack because the sound of the zipper was audible in the quiet corridor. The staff was very very nice and helpful. But as a traveller, I would have liked to meet other travellers, especially in a city like Kyoto. But that mistake ea probably from my side because I did not know what a cabin meant in Japan. Overall, a lovely hotel- for business travellers, and ft backpackers when they are fed up of hostels and feel the need for space.
Compact, clean, comfortable”
It was all I would have wished for in a capsule hotel and more. Your capsule consists of a bed and an about 15cm deep shelf running along the entire length of the bed, a TV and a safety box which is situated in the first 40cm of the shelf. It's not big enough for your luggage, but it can easily fit all your valuables. But the best thing is the location, Karasuma is a great outpost for exploring all that Kyoto has to offer. It's not far from the river, a huge shopping street, nijo castle, the former imperial palace, tons of other temples and parks, and if you want to go further you can take the bus to Kinkakuji (the golden pavilion) or the train station.
I always thought a 'capsule' hotel would be really uncomfortable - however the first class room at First Cabin were excellent! We got a free upgrade and the rooms were very clean, spacious, high tech and private. Although it's separated by gender, it was a great stay! The staff are very helpful and there's a subway stop just outside. Walking distance to Gion area and one subway stop away from Kyoto Station. We loved the stay and I would stay here again the next time I'm in Kyoto!
Great place to stay!”
Had first class cabins which are rather small hotel rooms closed by a curtain - exactly as on the photos. Unfortunately, this means you can hear every snoring cabin neighbor at night but ear plugs are provided for free. The place is very clean and tidy. Luggage that does not fit the lockers can be stored at the reception. English skills of the staff members are limited but they give their very best and in the end you always get what you needed. Quite fast and encrypted WiFi is available for free all over the place, only in the reception area it sometimes crashes. Located within walking distance (~10 min) from the traditional Gion district in a quiet parallel street of the vivid Shijo Dori street.
Good Budget Hotel”
Overall First Cabin exceeded my expectations, had a very good experience (4 nights) at this hotel. First of all it was value for money, very helpful as I visited Japan during the peak season. Next was the amenities and cleanliness of the hotel. All the basic amenities were provided for, the shared bathrooms and toilets were kept clean all the time. Rooms were pretty spacious, beds were good considering its a budget hotel. Also surprisingly secure environment, considering we did not have doors for our rooms (just a curtain). At night it was quiet (for the women's floor at least) and I was able to get a good rest most of the time. Will definitely stay here again the next time I visit Kyoto!
More luxurious than a capsule”
I liked the concept here - the rooms were a step up from a capsule, much bigger and quieter but still quite quirky. Not really a place for socialising as far as I could tell - the cabin areas were shockingly quiet for somewhere with only a curtain as a door between you and other guests thanks to rules put in place to keep noise levels down. Room cards to access single-sex floors and locked drawers for personal belongings. Clean showers with great water pressure. Hotel provides attends to your hygiene needs (body wash, shampoo, conditioner, toners, tooth brush, towels, PJs, toothbrush & paste, sponge etc). Located in a more modern part of Kyoto, just 1-2mins walk from Shijo subway station (Karasuma Line). Some sights are within walking distance if you don't mind walking for more than 20-30mins, however others will definitely require the use of public transport or a taxi. Close to eating and shopping in Shijo-dori and surrounding streets. I would recommend this accommodation. I was happy with the price after the special offer of an extra night made it a bit more appealing. Very quiet and easy to sleep here.
Overall a superb stay!”
I had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. Centrally located in Shijo, that makes it very accessible to all major sightseeing temples in Kyoto. Only 15 mins walk to Nishiki Market, and 8 minutes away from the Shijo-Karasuma bus stop. Also, 2 mins away from Shijo Ext 5 of the subway. Room is very clean & a good size for single traveller. Bed mattress is hard and not comfortable to sleep on so just ask for extra blanket/ comforter. Lacking AC too but overall a good hotel. Will definitely stay here again!!!
