Colonial Relic with charm
Princess Alexandra planted a plam here in 1961
No glitz, fuss or pampering here! The former NCO mess and bachelor quarters of the RAF base, Gan (1956-1976), transmogrified into a sleepy, but quite comfortable budget inn (for those who find the orderliness of a military upbringing calming). Nice (overgrown) gardens, (former parade ground), and photos of Royal visits past adorn the walls... I was the only guest and looked after royally. Good breakfasts. Best thing is the bar - fully stocked, well-priced and you have the whole place to collapse soporific into an equatorial stupor. Lovely!

Rather intersting that Royalty such as Quenn Elizabeth had been here when it was a RAF base !

Sweet summer week in January
Very pleasant and polite people, Great nature and scenery, Close to airport and diving school
Last winter my husband and I spent a great time here. Tropical flower-trees and palms are everywhere. All staff is kind and polite, english speaking. Local and european food was good. Our room with great garden view always was fresh and cool. At the day and evening we were sitting or laying just beside the sea, looking at marvelos fish, crabs. In the hotel we took bycicles free, also we rented moped to go through next few islands with a great nature. To get to the village on the next island or to the airport by foot takes 10 minutes. Just 100 meters from the entrance - Diving club and souvenier shops. If we will have an opportunity to visit Addu Atoll again - we will stay only here :)

Excellent Value Option
Very attentive and personable staff that are eager to please
We chose this hotel based on price and were pleasantly surprised. This hotel is located next to the Equator Village and comprises the other half of what used to be the British RAF base. It is located within walking distance to the airport although they provided free airport transfer. There is an excellent dive school just past Equator Village (5 min walk) through whom you can schedule snorkeling or scuba trips. A few restraunts are near the hotel serving simple, local food. Gift shops are just across the street. This hotel is in a rebuilding stage. The new management was very eager to please. Without our asking, they upgraded our room to the ex-president’s villa and gave us breakfast with no price increase. They also drove us around town, showed us all the sites, gave us two home cooked meals and took us night fishing – all at no expense. Our best times were probably just sitting and talking with the manager and staff who were all very personable. Rather than luxury, our goal on this vacation was to relax while getting to know the local people and culture. We were very pleased to have chosen this hotel as it fullfilled those desires

Great place with no one there
Good location, rooms
Our room was huge and very clean and had a great outdoor bathroom. The whole place was huge and right by ocean and next door to equator village and diverland dive shop so it's easy to book snorkeling/dives. Internet was $10/hr but good connection, laundry very expensive. Staff were very friendly. Restaurant had good local food but very poor western food but this was kind of the norm for local restaurants. A 2 min walk to a different cafe will give you 5x the selection at less than half price. You can rent scooters for $25/day from souvenir shops in front which will give you access to lots of great cafes on the different islands. There is no where to rent a bicycle. Biggest complaint is we were the only ones there for the whole week. According to people at the dive shop there is rarely any foreign tourists staying at Gan island retreat. Seems like they don't advertise as its good value for what you pay in Maldives, especially after seeing equator village which is much more expensive and very similar except for having a pool.
