The staff were friendly and happy to help at all times. Resort always clean and absolutely stunning.”
The staff, in particular Ramesh the food and beverage manager. Ramesh went above and beyond to make us comfortable during our stay. The kindest and most helpful at all times! Ramesh remembered our names, dietary needs and bent over backwards every day! On our last day Ramesh organised a beautiful lunch for us to say farewell! Mary was also helpful and sweet and nothing was too difficult. Mary is always smiling and efficient. The chef - Agus was extremely accommodating to our dietary needs, being a vegetarian was not an issue. The chef organised fresh food each time we attended the buffet specifically for us. Anything we wanted was available. The service was impeccable from all staff. The resort was stunning and always clean. The rooms were cleaned twice a day and were extremely comfortable. Anything we asked for was provided instantly. I cannot wait for my next stay at Gaya Island! I’ve told all of my friends and family they must visit as honestly, my stay could not have been better.
We loved our stay at the resort. The rooms and facilities are beautiful and very luxurious. What makes this place special, though, is the warm hospitality and special attention paid by the staff. My only criticism would be that the food is quite expensive.
Gaya Island Resort is an example of what a wonderful boutique hotel is. We had such a fabulous time. Our children had such a fabulous time, we want to return again next Christmas. My only real quarrel is that the Mainland Chinese visitors are not aware of global resort etiquette. We had smokers next to us and while the hotel was kind enough to move us (and upgraded our view), we were once again moved to another Mainland Chinese couple who were loud about their Chinese shows and general in room communication. We had to knock on their door to make them aware of how loud they were.
Away from the crowds ”
Great getaway from the mainland and only a short 10 minutes transfer by boat. From meeting lovely Eva who welcomed us to the hotel all the staff throughout the hotel were exceptional and super helpful. Room was great and the elevated position rewards you with stunning sea views. Plenty of choice for activities if you like to be active. Rashid and Jamie who took us on the mangrove kayaking and trek to the nearby Tavajun bay provided loads of useful information about the islands wildlife. Snorkeling close to the hotel jetty and to the coral gardens is a must! Also would recommend the sunset cruise and the sunrise breakfast on the beach. Thank Xi for getting up so early to prepare for us and for looking after us so well. Perfect end to a perfect holiday. If we have any niggle it would be the cost of the beer, the cheaper beer isn't always available so you end up paying £5 for a 330ml can. Also the soft seating in the bar could do with replacing as it was quite dirty. Oh and the spa was quite pricy but heavenly if you're on honeymoon or a special holiday and want to treat yourselves. Highly recommend Gaya Island Resort.
A touch of paradise”
Very happy to recommend this resort a mere 10 minutes boat ride outside of KK. Rooms are beautifully set out although the walk to them can be tiring since they are built into the mountainside. The views are amazing throughout the resort and the private beach was the highlight. We were able to see bearded pigs, monkeys and enormous lizards. There are 3 restaurants with a buffet (125rm) the cheapest with a seafood and Japanese option as well. Be aware there is a dress code of long pants and collar for the higher end. Wifi is available via a personalised wifi device. All in all a beautiful resort that is a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu.
Disappointing - Did not meet expectations ”
This was the part of our holiday we were most looking forward to and with the price paid we expected it to be perfect. We had a very smooth check in and arrival, taking us over prior to the scheduled time. We were met at the hotel my Shahrul who showed us to our room, he was very friendly and helpful! Food ordered from the Pool bar upon arrival was not as described and substituted many of the ingredients hoping that we wouldn't notice. Breakfast choice was ok but could of been better, you had to make the tea and coffee yourself which I would expect in a cheaper hotel but not here. We then headed down to the pool... It was literally heaving with no space anywhere! We managed to find a space by the beach and kept looking for a lounger at the pool throughout the day but only found one at 5pm. Next morning a friend managed to save us a lounger at 8am and all spaces were gone by 8:30am! Food on offer was good but the choice is very limited which gets a little repetitive, we noticed others were ordering food not from the menu, we asked about this and they said we could order a pizza but we had to find this out ourselves. Food and drink service was very slow and this was clearly down to a lack of staff. One poor guy on his own making drinks. The room was good, a huge bathroom and dressing area but it was very dark and old in the main bedroom section. I know most of this review is negative but i expected a lot more from my stay, I travel regularly and 9/10 expectations are met or above. This hotel could be so much more. I would like to mention Shahrul and Erom as two very friendly and capable members of staff. Overall, I wouldn't recommend staying here for this price.
Nice Resort to stay for a few nights. staff were all very friendly and service was exceptional. Unfortunately you're restricted to the resort thus food options are those restaurants in the resort which can be pretty pricey. overall good.
Hotel is great. But foods are poor.”
Most People in hotel are always smiling and very welcome guests. Hotel is great in room, position and view. Very disappointed for the breakfast and buffet dinner. Foods are very poor and can't imagine fruit juice and coffee wasn't free for buffet dinner. So many foods run out very soon, and they didn't make up in time because too many Chinese guests so they try to make up as late as they can. The quality in buffet restaurant is poor. Some chef seems part time staff which cook foods awful. Very POOR! Foods in restaurant 'Fisherman Cove' is lovely!
Very romantic. Extremely comfortable bed. Brilliant tub for couples.”
One of my best resort stays ever - almost everything from check-in to check-out was perfect. Beautiful location, great vibe. Amazing staff as well. Everything was great except for the food offering there - which is quite limited and at times a ripoff.
What stands out most about Gaya Island Resort is the staff. Stunning setting apart, they cannot do enough for you. No task too big. They are simply lovely. The hotel is fantastic and so are the facilities. A wonderful stay.
Very Nice Resort”
After all the hesitations from the reviews that I read, I finally booked myself and my husband for a 3-day stay at Gaya Island Resort. I did make the right choice! The place was really nice and clean! And the staff, my gosh is by far, the best staff I have encountered! Everyone was really courteous, always greets you with a smile and very accommodating. They also let us in our villa earlier since we arrived a bit early, free of charge. One other thing I liked about the resort is it encourages people to walk as form of exercise and does not really offer transportation. Our villa was a bit uphill and though it was a long walk to and from the resto and beach, we didnt really mind. For those who dont really like walking, I suggest you take the villas nearest to the restos, but the view is not that great. The view at the higher areas was AWESOME. Get the Canopy villa seaview and you will get to see the best sunrise ever! I was really awed and emotional when I saw it. Really, really nice! Two downside: the price of the food, specifically at Omakase. Food was great but not worthy of a USD50 rate. Not really 5 star-ish. And the garbage at the sea. Its definitely not the resorts fault but maybe because its pretty near the harbor thats why there were garbage at one side of the beach. Theres a side thats clean too though. Overall, I love this resort. We had really an amazing stay and will definitely come back if given the chance!
A romantic couple weekend 30 May to 1 June 2015”
My lady and I enjoyed a beautiful, romantic weekend at the resort. The room was very clean and comfortable, with a picturesque view. Dinner at the Fisherman's Cove was excellent, again with a pleasing vista. Dinner at the Japanese restaurant only mediocre. Fish and prawns very good but beef poor. For the price of the meal Wagyu Beef should be served, instead from New Zealand. To my knowledge, New Zealand only renowned for its lamb and we could see why. We were given a full refund after complaining. An honourable, pleasing and excessive response, as we ate the food. But, typical of the client service and desire to please We also enjoyed the trip to the private beach. Watching the turtles being fed and seeing the bearded pigs. The staff were all very courteous and eager to please. Jayston particularly helpful. Thank you very much for making our stay so memorable.
Safe place, great hospitality”
Great level of attentiveness and hospitality of the staff. During my stay, i had an accident whereby i was cut by corals in the sea. Immediately I was being attended to by a resident nurse at the resort and was well taken care of. The staff even took the trouble to send extra medication to the room later that day. Safe resort, great ambience and environment to stay in.
Small, luxury hote with superior service ”
I had a fantastic stay at the hotel. The design is distinctively Borneo; staff is friendly and thoughtful, and the hotel is lush - landscape is superb. Food is great - important for the picky Malaysians.
This is truly a 5***** star hotel !!”
I should start by saying that i am not an easy guest if the hotel is rated 5***** stars. If that's the case, everything must come in high standards. As those are "the play rules" i am quite demanding with these sort of hotels and i visit them frequently (Banyan Tree, Shangri-la, Ritz, FourSeasons, etc). I stayed with my wife in a short 4-day honeymoon and our stay (regardless the bad weather 2 days) was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. The location is superb and the hotel layout is very wellthought. The hotel has a right size and it feels like a small boutique hotel. The rooms are very spacious and confortable with a smart layout. But on top of all that what really outstands in a brilliant way is the attentive, kind and professional service of the staff. From the booking, cleaning, waiters, chefs, reception, beach staff, drivers, etc to the top management they were absolutely fantastic (special mention to Ms.Yati for his kindness) and all of them make our experiencence at the hotel a remarkable one.
LOVELY PLACE ON THE BEACH”
I absolutely loved it, the staff was very accommodating, the rooms are very nice, the food was delicious! They a have an extra private small beach where you can go by boat for a day, nice pool, good food. The staff was amazing , very helpful and kind, they well trained in customer service as well. The restaurants are bit expensive, but the food was fantastic, you have to try the specials - local favorites. The room was of very large size, very comfortable, I will be coming back for sure.
Peaceful resort, with beautiful rooms and very qui”
Perfect place for a couple as it is relaxing and quiet. The rooms are huge with very nice bathrooms and a huge bath tub! The beach and the pool were clean and never crowded. Also, you can borrow snorkeling gear, kayaks, etc. for free. The only downside was the food as there was very little Malaysian cuisine. Although the nicer restaurant on the roof was pretty good for fresh fish.
The view at rooms are facing KK city (long distance over the sea). 2 nights are not enough to explore the whole resort. Tavajun Bay, the resort's private beach is really nice. The toilet ventilation shall be improved.
Relaxing, Romantic and stunning location”
We had 6 amazing days at Gaya Resort. The location of the resort is just fantastic right on the beach and next to the forest, where we can go for nature walks and watch the wildlife. There are also lots of activites we could do, i.e. snorkeling, kayaking, diving, paddle board, or just relax in swimming-pool, or on the beach. The spa is also really beautiful. The rooms are really big and very clean, however, if you stay in any of the rooms on the back and on the hill like us, then the treck to and back to room is a bit tiring. It would be nice if there was a golf buggy service to the rooms! Good variety of food at the buffet. Unfortunately we could not try the grill restaurant as the dress code was close shoes and my partner did not bring any. Also the distance from the airport to the marina is 20 mins and then there is a speed boat every 2 hours and it only takes 15 mins to the resort, which makes it really easy and convenient. Overall, it was excellent and we highly recommend it!
Excellent beach hotel , great staffs ”
Services here are top class . The hotel is well designed and beautifully landscaped . The pool , library , sun lounges are perfect . Breakfast is one of the best I have ever seen. The island is closer to the city than I thought . So even the hotel is perfect , the beach is a bit of let down.
