Lovely well located hotel”
Beautiful, soothing, calm interior, helpful staff, comfortable futons, relaxing Onsen. Our family room was spacious and bright, and we all loved the yakatas for wearing in the room. Lovely relaxing stay in the heart of Gion.
Traditional Japanese Experience”
This ryokan is amazing! The location was very conveniently located. There is a gorgeous shrine right next door. The room was spectacular. I felt like I was in the edo period of Japan. There is a en suite that features an amazing bamboo tub. I was worried that there was only the public bath. The futon was very comfortable. We also had a view of a little side garden. It was amazing. The facilities are very quiet and private. However, I think that the charm behind Gion Hatanaka is the staff. The women here feel like your mother. They are very caring, nice, and knowledgeable. my sister and I felt like we were at home. The woman, who helped us for our stay, was beyond hospitable and attentive. You will not regret your time here. Everything you need is in the rooms and you will experience real Japanese culture.
Strategically located at Gion but so serene and private. Great dinner and breakfast service.”
Highly recommended ! If you include the full omakase dinner and hearty breakfast, the price is reasonable. Wanted to give my family a taste of ryokan - they were not disappointed. Staff is v attentive (for our room, we have Matsuko-San providing great attentive but not intrusive service). We even had a chance to use the public bath ! Must try if it’s within your budget - spend a night and gain great experience.
Nice Ryokan with Onsen”
Location is good. Room is quite spacious. There is a public onsen too. I have a room for 4 persons (Japanese style). It is quite nice. Location is also good (15 minutes by taxi to Kyoto station). Staff is very friendly and helpful. Room is very clean.
The service is impeccable. They have a good attention to detail. Food is amazing. One slight discomfort is that the toilets/bath area is not heated. made it a little uncomfortable when the weather is cold. Otherwise, great place and would return if I can.
A warm welcome in Kyoto”
A traditional experience with all the trimmings amidst the amazing sights of Kyoto. The meals are large, well-served, and challenging. The ryokan is so quiet that we felt like we were the only guests. Plenty of room to spread out in our deluxe quarters.
Awesome location, staff and cleanliness. Staffs were like friends to give real good advise. On the day we left this place, staff came out to the door and watched us left to the road side, so impressive.
Good experience but expensive”
It was a superb experience albeit the high price... but we enjoyed it totally. And since we are only going to do it once, just go for the best. We booked for the maiko show as well and I would recommend it.
Traditional style hotel in great location”
I honestly had a great time at the Gion Hatanaka. My stay will be unforgettable. My sons love the hotel very much since it is a true traditional Japanese style ryokan. The staffs, even the ones who cannot speak English, are all nice and very helpful.
An authentic experience”
The food was of the traditional style and admittedly was at times challenging. It was very high quality though.
We stayed here for one night to have a truly authentic, traditional Japanese experience. The staff were very lovely and it was fun sleeping on futons, using the hot tubs and eating at low tables. We opted for the evening meal and breakfast. These meals were exquisitely presented but we found the textures and taste of most of the food too challenging for our palates even though we usually like any cuisine. The hotel is in the Gion area where you can walk to some fascinating temples and the Geisha area
Very good ryokan with helpful and polite staff and good foods”
This nice ryokan is located just next door to Yasaka temple and close to the busy Gion are. The staff are so helpful and responsive. We were having issues with the shinkansen schedule and they tried to keep contact and help us during the time.
Great food and attentive service. But needs to improve on the cleanliness ”
For the price paid, certainly expect greater attention to cleanliness and upkeep of the rooms. Found a cockroach in our room and managed to catch it and showed the staff. However, she seems nonchalant about it. The staff could also take initiatives to recommend some tourist attractions and geisha show. On a positive note, serves the best wagyu beef and rice was cooked to perfection.
Excellent ryokan in great location”
Second time to Gion Hatanaka and unsurprisingly had an amazing stay as expected. Futon was comfortable. The meals were decent (without being exceptional) and very filling. The public bath was not huge but reasonable. Service as always was exemplary. Cost may appear high but if you take into account the half-board (2 meals) and superb location then it's actually pretty good value for money.
Room and service was outstanding! We had a lovely time and our hostess was so gracious and efficient. The Japanese breakfast was beautiful and delicious. We throughly enjoyed our stay and so happy we experienced a ryokan and staying at Gion Hatanaka after reviewing many different options. We were a family of 3 and the room was spacious and very comfortable. The onsen (public bath) facilities were lovely and empty when we tried it so essentially a private bath. The only note to travellers is the room is not suited for relaxing/lounging around for extended parts of the day, like a typical Western hotel room, because the beds are not setup until the evening. As long as visitors have this expectation and plan to be out exploring Kyoto during the day there will be no issues.
We had an excellent stay at Gion Hatanaka. The staff and service were outstanding. The property was clean and beautiful. Every need was anticipated and met. A great location for exploring Kyoto. Very “foreigner-friendly”. Would definitely stay here again.
A traditional "home" away from home.”
The moment we walked in we were greated by very friendly staff who told us everything we needd to know and even carried our heavy suitcases up 2 flights of stairs. The room was spacious and the matcha bowl and sweets were delicious. Delicate touches such as incense were really special. The room vame with a private bath and toilet! There were yukata and free amenties for the sento (public bath). We enjoyed a luxurious dinner with the maiko show, another great activity to enjoy (seperate charge). The public bath was my favourite, getting up early to go while no one else is around is a really relaxing experience. This place is honestly a lovely ryokan to stay in and i reccomend trying it even just for one night.
First time staying at a ryokan and loved our one-night experience at Gion Hatanaka. Staff and facilities were both excellent, as was the in-room dining experience. Attention to presentation was extraordinary. Great location for exploring the Gion district of Kyoto. Worth the splurge for one night.
Great ryokan experience”
The location is unbeatable,in the heart of southern higashiyama, near gion and within walking distance to kiyomizu-dera temple.the neaest bus station just 5 minute walking.everthing about the ryokan also great, excellent service, room is large n clean, breakfast also good
An incredible experience. Gion Hatanaka is wonderfully located and we had an amazing time. Sadly we were unable to book seats for their show - it was full. We did leave our booking until the last minute (two weeks before) and it was Cherry Blossom season. However, I'm unsure if priority is given to hotel guests.
