Fabulous ryokan!”
We loved our peaceful and elegant stay at Gion Hatanaka. The cuisine was outstanding; interesting, beautifully presented, and wonderfully served in our room. Yes, there are rules regarding timing of meals, but we did not find this to be a problem. We loved the Japanese breakfasts. We booked a dinner one evening with Maiko, which was quite expensive, but a fun experience with terrific food. On the third night we had a sukiyaki dinner in our room. The presentation of every dish at every meal was lovely. The staff was very attentive - the women who had served us during our stay came to say goodbye as we left. The rooms are large, immaculate, and the craftsmanship of the building is something to be admired. The photos on the property's website don't do it justice! We enjoyed the public baths as well. After a day of site-seeing, a relaxing meal in your own room followed by a hot bath is so For an authentic Japanese experience, we highly recommend Gion Hatanaka.

Exceptional”
Room and service was outstanding! We had a lovely time and our hostess was so gracious and efficient. The Japanese breakfast was beautiful and delicious. We throughly enjoyed our stay and so happy we experienced a ryokan and staying at Gion Hatanaka after reviewing many different options. We were a family of 3 and the room was spacious and very comfortable. The onsen (public bath) facilities were lovely and empty when we tried it so essentially a private bath. The only note to travellers is the room is not suited for relaxing/lounging around for extended parts of the day, like a typical Western hotel room, because the beds are not setup until the evening. As long as visitors have this expectation and plan to be out exploring Kyoto during the day there will be no issues.

Fantastic Ryokan in Kyoto”
Gion Hatanaka was nothing but amazing. We stayed for 1 night, and from the moment we arrived, the staff at Gion Hatanaka was nothing more than accommodating and fantastic! They held our bag both before check-in and after check-out. They brought our bags to our room, and our room attendant was absolutely amazing. We opted for the dinner and Japanese breakfast, which was fantastic, plus they even asked us if we had food preferences! Dinner and breakfast are mainly seafood based, and quite filling. We also had easy access to some of the main temples and shrines in the area. We used the public baths, which were very relaxing, and had them all to ourselves. We had a wonderful staff, and will definitely return and stay again! Thank you again!

That authentic experience!”
If you love immersing yourself in a culture and just going with the flow, a ryokan is a great way to experience a part of the long and ancient culture of Japan. A traditional style hotel, it is a different universe from your 4 or 5 star modern hotels, but as a unique experience, it is superlative. I cannot recommend enough that you go for the full experience - the kaiseki dinner, five courses of local, seasonal dishes, with easily 6 to 12 different foods in each course, is both delicious and artful. Luckily it is usually served in the room, and you are already sitting on the comfortably springy tatami mat because you are not going to want to move for several hours afterwards. The public hot baths are HOT! Ryokans were traditionally a one-night stop for pilgrims and travelers, and the amenities are customized to that experience - if you have been sightseeing to the limit of your endurance, a night in a ryokan is a great way to rest your aching muscles and relax before diving back into exploring the wonderful nation of Japan. Gion Hatanaka in particular is wonderfully placed next to Yasaka, an ancient shinto shrine, and within easy walking distance of Nishiki Market (great for foodies!), Kodai-ji, Shoho-ji (Buddist temple), Kennin-ji (Zen buddist temple with zen rock garden) Hanamikoji dori (the classic neighborhood of geiko/geisha) and just a thousand and one different attractions that are fascinating! The staff really cares about every little detail and your stay here will be a delight!

Traditional Japanese Experience”
This ryokan is amazing! The location was very conveniently located. There is a gorgeous shrine right next door. The room was spectacular. I felt like I was in the edo period of Japan. There is a en suite that features an amazing bamboo tub. I was worried that there was only the public bath. The futon was very comfortable. We also had a view of a little side garden. It was amazing. The facilities are very quiet and private. However, I think that the charm behind Gion Hatanaka is the staff. The women here feel like your mother. They are very caring, nice, and knowledgeable. my sister and I felt like we were at home. The woman, who helped us for our stay, was beyond hospitable and attentive. You will not regret your time here. Everything you need is in the rooms and you will experience real Japanese culture.

An unforgettable experience”
Gion Hatanaka was wonderful from start to finish. It's a traditional hotel with some modern touches like private bathrooms, although the shared bath is a must do. All staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean, and comfortable and the location was very central. Meals were exquisite. Dinner was served in Kaiseki style with dozens of meals served over 5 courses. Don't eat beforehand - meals are huge! Highly recommend!

Excellent”
First time staying at a ryokan and loved our one-night experience at Gion Hatanaka. Staff and facilities were both excellent, as was the in-room dining experience. Attention to presentation was extraordinary. Great location for exploring the Gion district of Kyoto. Worth the splurge for one night.

Worth every penny...”
This was the traditional Japanese experience I was hoping to have. Gion Hatanaka was wonderful...great service, professional staff, incredibly hospitable, great food, close in walking distance to all sorts of sights and public transit, yet still quiet and peaceful inside my rooms. The Friday night maiko dinner was outstanding!! I loved staying here!

Excellent ryokan in great location”
Second time to Gion Hatanaka and unsurprisingly had an amazing stay as expected. Futon was comfortable. The meals were decent (without being exceptional) and very filling. The public bath was not huge but reasonable. Service as always was exemplary. Cost may appear high but if you take into account the half-board (2 meals) and superb location then it's actually pretty good value for money.

Amazing experience!”
We landed in Tokyo and took a bullet train directly to Kyoto. We were exhausted when we got to Gion - the staff was so accommodating and waited so we could have our dinner. The experience in Gion is what made our trip to Kyoto so special! Our 8 year old son already wants to come back next summer! Everything from great food, our room and all the wonderful Japanese traditions you'll find at Gion. Thank you so much Gion for being so wonderful and kind to our family - we will definitely come back! Maybe next time with our extended family too! 😊

Exceptional Ryokan hotel”
An amazing place! So much effort into every small thing, from kimono's to wear, flower arrangements, the most awe-inspiring traditional breakfasts to helpful and friendly staff who bend over backwards to help and be welcoming. A unique and beautiful experience. Thank you, Gion Hatanaka!!

Excellent”
An incredible experience. Gion Hatanaka is wonderfully located and we had an amazing time. Sadly we were unable to book seats for their show - it was full. We did leave our booking until the last minute (two weeks before) and it was Cherry Blossom season. However, I'm unsure if priority is given to hotel guests.

Traditional style hotel in great location”
I honestly had a great time at the Gion Hatanaka. My stay will be unforgettable. My sons love the hotel very much since it is a true traditional Japanese style ryokan. The staffs, even the ones who cannot speak English, are all nice and very helpful.

Wonderful ryokan experience”
Gion Hatanaka was wonderful, in every dimension. Our geisha/server had a wonderful sense of humor, and looked after us in every way. The facility was beautiful, and perfectly maintained. The public hot bath was among the best I have ever used. All in all, a wonderful time.

Such an experience”
Our wildest expectations were surpassed at Gion Hatanaka. The service was impeccable and the food sublime. Ate like kings. While it might sound kitschy, guests should partake in the maiko dinner. It will not disappoint.

A unique experience”
Other than the price (expensive) I would have loved to stay here for a few days. Everything about this place is nice and well run. The staff are wonderful and the food is a unique experience that I'm happy I had. The quality, variety and service of the meals was excellent. The ryokan is very located in the Gion district. Easy to walk. If you want this type of experience, because it is different from a traditional hotel, you will be very pleased. You get what you pay for.

Amazing Ryokan experience in the heart of traditional Kyoto”
I stayed here for one night with my boyfriend and his friend who we were travelling with. From the moment we arrived, we were fully taken care of. I've never stayed at a Japanese ryokan before, so I did my research. This place lived up to all my expectations. The surrounding area was beautiful and within walking distance of a dozen main attractions. It's a bit harder to get to other places from there, so focus your sightseeing in Gion and you'll have a very pleasant and relaxing pace. The kaiseki dinner is not for picky eaters. They did not have an English translations for the set menu, so you have to be willing to try things without knowing what they are even remotely. The staff tries their best to explain but some food just doesn't translate. I highly recommend staying more than 1 night for the full experience. An overnight stay isn't quite enough to fully enjoy the bath. The bath works wonders on travel weary legs though.
