A small hotel on a quiet side street in the bustling Gion District of Kyoto. ”
We had a western style room (they also have Japanese style rooms with futons), very spacious and comfortable. Many temples and shrines and beautiful gardens to see in this traditional, old-Japan neighborhood . Everywhere you look, beauty! The Maifukan staff was excellent, everybody pleasant and very helpful, with good English speaking skills. A lovely Japanese style breakfast is available right in the hotel, for an added price. We loved the peace and quiet of the hotel, with the main streets of Gion just a short walk away. Convenient to public transportation, and also a great area for walking. For me, the only negatives were 1) the firmness of the beds, because I am accustomed to a softer mattress, and 2) they did not have a public bath (hot tub spa) on site. But these small complaints were outweighed by the many positives.

Nice tatami room in Gion. Very authentic”
I brought my friend to Japan for the first time and wanted to give him an authentic Japanese experience in the form of a tatami room. The futons were very comfortable and we were both very impressed with the size and cleanliness of the rooms. The hotel is a short walk from Yasaka Shrine and Shijo Dori, one of the major shopping streets in Kyoto. We were able to explore Southern Higashiyama from here and take a short walk to Kiyomizudera for a spectacular view of the city. The staff were nice and attentive at the hotel and I would highly recommend Gion Maifukan to anyone visiting Kyoto for sightseeing. The only downside would be proximity to Kyoto Station. It was either a 30min walk and train trip or a 1,200 yen taxi ride.

Nice hotel in perfect location with excellent serv”
Loved my 3 nights stay in Gion Maifukan Hotel, and will definitely go back with my family! It's a hotel suitable for all kinds of travelers: spacious and quiet room, friendly and nice staff providing efficient services, perfect location (few minutes walk from main bus stops and many sight seeing spots.)

Cool throwback vibe”
Picture yourself attending the 1964 Olympics at this MCM vintage property. Everything at this hotel has a cool 60's feel, complete with impeccable service and cleaning that you just don't get from large corporate chains. Great location too....love Maifukan and will return on my next trip to Kyoto...but I'm booking the big suite on the 4th Floor ;)

Smart, slightly bland but great location”
A perfect location in the heart of mystical, magical Gion. On a picturesque street close to key sights including Ishibe-koji alley, lots of great temples. Peaceful location but close to good bus route, shops, restaurants etc. About a half hour walk into centre of Kyoto. The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable - and big. It's a new building and very smart, with a great French restaurant on the ground floor. It does feel a little bit characterless compared to some of the "real" ryokans we stayed in, but it's a good blend of Western and Japanese characteristics for those who aren't quite adventurous enough for the full Japanese style accommodation.

Great location and friendly staff”
The hotel is locates close to the Gion district with many temples, shrines and restaurant. It's alos only a short stroll to the downtown area with an intersting market and a number of department stores. The staff were very friendly and helpful, their level of English was OK. The room was normal size, Japanese style with comfortable futon beds. We didn't have breakfast here as we had to leave very early the next morning. Kyoto main station is a 15 min taxi ride away. Would definetely go back to this lovely little hotel.

One of the nicest in Kyoto ”
I have stayed in this hotel many times and have always found it the perfect hotel ryokan in Kyoto. I thought it could not get any better, thus time, however, they added a new breakfast. It turned out to be one of the best I gave had anywhere. Not only was it an exceptional value, but it was haute cuisine. It was washoku at its best. Do not mis it!

Great traditional Japanese hotel”
The rooms is traditional and spacious, very nice and quiet location. Service is good. But finding the hotel by taxi is quite difficult, so should prepare and print out the maps before heading there since Kyoto taxi driver do not speak Enghlish at all.

Wonderful hotel in the heart of Gion”
Stayed in a tradional Japanese room for 2 nights with my husband & 10 yr old. This hotel is very clean and the futons are comfortable. The weather outside was quite cold during our visit but our room was warm and cozy. We are not used to sleeping with the heater on so we turned it off at night and it stayed a comfortable temperature. The staff were very welcoming, kind and professional. The location was really great too. I would definitely stay here again!

Strategic japanese ryokan in gion district”
Strongly recommneded if you want to explore all the heritage buildings/attractions in gion district due to close proximity (5-10 minutes walk) to maruyama park, kodaiji temple, yasaka pagoda, yasaka shrine, gio corner and shijo shopping street..............

很方便的酒店,离景点近,地铁稍远,但很安静”
Just across the door is the Bapan Shrine, a hotel very close to the scenic area, I feel very good. A little far from the subway station, but very clean, quiet and noisy, the room is actually very large, bigger than most Japanese hotels, sleeping very comfortable. When you see the path, you only need two roads.

Fantastic stay!”
It was a fantastic stay as the tatami room is so clean and spacious and comfortable. The hotel is located right in the middle of all the shrine and temples where I was planning to visit. Walking distance to the famous geisha street. Easy to find local food.

Quaint Ryokan/ Hotel”
Our stay was ok - we were there for one night only and chose not to eat at the ryokan. We had opted for one of the traditional rooms. A few disappointing things although not deal breakers for our trip. 1. we checked in at 8pm but our room wasn't ready...it was being made for the evening. We did not know this was the tradition so I guess they expect you to announce when you will arrive? After a long travel, we were asked to wait in the small lobby to await our room being made up. 2. Check out is at 10am! We asked for late check out but this was not possible / allowed. You would expect a little more flexibility given how expensive the room was!!

Good sized room, helpful staff”
We stayed for 2 nights in a Western style room. It was comfortable and roomy, with tea and coffee bags provided along with delicious rice cakes. The staff were very friendly and helpful. No laundry facilities, but there is a great commercial laundry just over the road if you need to do some washing. Very well located to the city centre and Higashiyama shrines. Overall, a nice place to stay. Would definitely stay there again.

Great ryokan with great location”
We spent a night at the annex Karaku coming from Osaka. The staff were very polite and helpful. It was near Yasaka shrine so whenever we arrive by taxi it is easy to inform the driver. It is also near several shops, restaurants and train station. It was a wonderful stay and experience for me and my family.
