Penang best resort hotel”

If holidays in Penang, visiting the city is not enough if one`s didn't try out the Resort hotel. Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La is really a wonderful resort with great beautiful pool for adults and children. So many activities from morning and evening where the guests can take part in. Makes many friends from Australia and other part of the world. Until check out time, new friends still hopping I could join them at the pool for some water polo. Many shops, restaurants & taxi outside the hotel. Hotel itself also provided shutter bus to airport. Definitely would stay at Golden Sand again. Highly recommend this hotel. Room rates are reasonable too. It really worth the price you are paying.

My preferred accommodation in Penang”

Comfortable, good location and the beach

Golden Sands Resort by Shangri-La Penang Hotel is a nice hotel. I love the place. An example of a great hotel. Welcome was great. It is almost a back to nature surrounding. All the staff from management until the cleaners was friendly. Location is very good (near Pasar Malam Batu Feringhi). The beaches are clean, not crowded, a beach for a decent family picnic. Pools are large, well mainted. Room are very comfortable. Overall it was a great hotel for a holiday. Wish I could stay there for the whole week.

fabulous beach front location”

beach location, big rooms, gret views

this was our second stay at the golden sands hotel by shangri-la on batu feringgi beach. check-in was fast and courteous, then it was on to our beautiful refurbished room with mountain view. the daily buffet breakfast was huge and delicious. the large pool set in beautiful tropical gardens was a haven during the heat of the day, and steps from the beach and ocean. we have no hesitation in recommending the golden sands by shangri-la to all and we will definately return when next in malaysia.

Lovely hotel”

Beach front views

we stayed at the golden sands for 3 nights. we had a very relaxing stay here. the rooms are large and fully equipped. large clean swimming pools with lot of chairs to lounge around in. laundry on site, clean and modern gym. this resort is so big so its perfect to hide away and find your own space for some peace and quiet. what was also nice was that we could walk next door to shangri-la hotel and use their facilities, pool restaurant etc and any purchases we made could just be charged back to our room. my only issue was that we bought a hotel with breakfast included however for some reason when we got there they said we only paid for breakfast for one person. i had to pay extra for my partner which was a annoying but it wasn't a big spend. the buffet itself has lots to choose from so bring your appetite. this resort would be a great stay for families as there are so many facilities for kids: kids clubs, chill out rooms and even a water slide. there is a free shuttle to georgetown that runs daily at different times. i would stay here again if i was to visit penang

Great location”

Laid-back relaxing resort

as golden sands resort was fully booked, they upgraded all the rooms which i booked to their sister hotel - rasa sayang seaview room. unfortunately the seaview room did not have much of a sea view at all and rasa sayang was a little less laid-back, with a more business like feel. i would certainly book golden sands again if i visit penang, it looks like an awesome vacation accomodation. the location is also closer to the action (night market, food places) in batu ferringhi than rasa sayang.

Overall pleased ”

Pools, staff and beach

The staff, as one expects at Shangri-La properties, were very professional and friendly. The hotel is right on the beach - so we went jet skiing and paragliding just metres from the hotel - good fun. The pools are great and the hotel is well maintained. The room was fine for a 4 star hotel - though the hillside view was not particularly pleasant (I would suggest a poolside view with balcony if you don't mind paying extra). When we moved into our non-smoking room there was a faint smell of cigarettes (perhaps the last guest had been smoking) - but it seemed to go away or we ceased to notice it. The Batu Ferringhi nightmarket is just outside and worth a look round. BF is not not a party town but it is pleasant with some good dining options. The other Shangri-la hotel next door to the Golden Sands has some excellent restaurants. The Golden Sands would certainly suit families, of whom there were many there - there are a lot of activities laid on for kids. Georgtown is a 45 minute trip away and worth seeing (there's a free shuttle bus from the hotel).

Another good Shangri-La Resort”

Great rooms, lovely pool, convenient shuttle services

Golden Sands is another great resort by Shangri-La. The rooms were spacious, comfortable and clean and the facilities were excellent, with a nice pool area and good breakfast buffet. The location is quite good, with a night market nearby with plenty of massage shops. However, the best part is the shuttle service to Gurney Plaza, probably the best shopping mall in Penang. The service was great, except for one fairly annoying issue, which was the failure to help us with our numerous bags on arrival.

Golden Sands”

The Golden Sands is always the place we try to stay when visiting the Batu Ferringhi beach area in Penang. I booked 2 adjoining rooms for our stay and the rooms were nice. I would highly recommend the sea view rooms as they have a balcony you can sit on that overlooks the swimming pools and the sea. The pools and the grass area with lounge chairs is the best part of the resort. The breakfast café is always quite crowded and usually loud but getting a table is generally not a problem. The selection if quite good as well. The rooms are very pricey and I do wish they would reduce the rates but otherwise, very satisfied.

Endless fun for kids”

An anniversary getaway, we chose Golden Sands primarily to relax while kids were looking forward to enjoying school holidays by playing with slides, pool, and of course sands at the beach. My kids are 5, 4, and 2 yo. There really enjoyed themselves especially at the indoor Adventure Zone, with its mega slides and multiple modular play equipment. In the evening, we got wet at the Splash Zone and took turn to play slides at the pool. Kids also enjoyed playing with sand at the beach; water-sports are widely available along the beach but we didnt do it because not really suitable for toddlers. Hotel/Staff services are excellent, better than neighboring hotels i have stayed before. Hotel location is also great which is right in the middle of the town-center where banks, convenient stores and lots of eateries are within walking distance. At night, the town is lively by the famous Batu Feringgi Night Market. Trishaw service is available right in front of the hotel main entrance. Looking forward to stay again here.

great location and lovely sea view”

the pool and sea water sports

the golden sands by shangri-la is a gr8 place for the family. the best in penang. the pool is good and we had lots of fun. however for the kids, the water slides could have been more and better. the buffets were quite lavish and suit everyone's tastebuds. water sports are in plenty and it was the first time, all members of our family (adults and kids) could enjoy all the water sports at a reasonable price (after negotiations of course). the lion dance and the dragon dance were a bonus during the chinese new year. spending two days was just sufficient to enjoy the resort facilities and also drive to all the favourite points in the city. including the lok si budhist temple with 10,000 light candles and the wat chayamangkalaram budhist temple with the largest reclined budha.

One of the best hotels on the Ferringhi stretch”

Right on the beach and the convenience of having the Ferringhi night bazaar right outside the hotel doors.

I was pleasantly surprised to have been offered an upgrade, however it was only for the last night of my stay. Would have appreciated it if the hotel had extended that offer to the entirety of my stay as it would have been a real hassle to change rooms in the midst of it, therefore I declined the upgrade. However, I do appreciate the complimentary tokens of fruits and the cake which the hotel sent up to my room and of course, for the excellent service and hospitality with which I was attended to. Would like to give special kudos to the chefs at the breakfast buffet for one of them noted that myself and another patron were waiting for a tray of mushrooms to be refilled and promptly went into the kitchen to obtain two servings for the both of us respectively. Fine example of an observant employee. However, the rooms did not come equipped with bedroom slippers and razor kits or a comb. This is my second time to Golden Sands after two years. I went once right when the renovations were done and this time, the room looked considerably worn. For instance, the starfish pillow had a hole in it and the cushions looked a little dirty. A final comment; in the past, guests staying at Rasa Sayang and the Golden Sands were able to share the facilities such as the pools and the connecting grounds and so forth. I was sorely disappointed to discover that this was no longer the case even though both establishments are owned by the Shangri-La group.

Must stay in Golden Sands Resort”

Highly recommend for those who looking for hotel in Penang , Golden Sands Resort is super good as the facilities is too cool , especially the swimming pool , they have different deep of swimming pool such as the kid want , the medium want (1.5m) and also the deepest (3m) , swimming pool is facing the beach , beach itself have activity too , horse ride , banana boat and so on . The breakfast is awesome ! Many choices ! They've 2 side to take your breakfast , normally is the indoor want , once the indoor is full , outdoor want is open for public ! Me and Hubby went both ! That's too cool to have breakfast like this in 2 different view ! One day Indoor one day facing beach to have our breakfast . Hotel Cleanliness is definitely thumbs up , very clean and no odour at all . Most of our activity is in Georgetown , so far don't think is inconvenient because outside hotel there's some restaurant and convenient store .

Perfect beach holiday with friendly staff”

Fast free internet, wonderful staff, pool and leisure activities for the whole family

We checked out of another hotel as that hotel was a complete letdown. By comparison, the Golden Sands is in a completely different class even though both are 4 star hotels. The Golden Sands has been renovated so the public areas are completely new, clean and modern. The staff throughout the resort were absolutely fantastic - from the front desk to the waiters in the restaurant to the lifeguards by the pool. Every one of them gave me the feeling that they were there to help make my stay more comfortable and enjoyable. In terms of facilities, the hotel has it all. Fast free wifi throughout the resort (even close to the beach!) was nice. I cannot say enough good things about the hotel. Highly recommended!

Slice of heaven spoiled by other guests”

This hotel is incredible, the staff are lovely, the beach is on your doorstep. The rooms are nice (if a little dated), wonderful food at reasonable prices, eateries close by, food market a tuk tuk ride away, very acccommodating... However, our holiday was pretty much ruined by a large family of Lebanese Australians who were like something form a different planet. The hotel moved us next door to the 5 star resort to compensate, but I had chosen the Shangri-la for the children's facilities, and while they were only a short buggy ride away, it was a shame to have to move because of this large party of rude and ignorant guests. Really not the type of guests I would expect at a resort of this rating. I would have come back here again and again, but these regular intruders made me anxious to return with my young daughter. Such a shame. If only the management had the courage to remove them from the property as soon as the trouble started, as I was definitely not the only upset guest.

Great hotel for a young family in Penang”

family oriented, nice breakfast buffet

we enjoyed our time at the golden sands resort in penang, and found the room to be very nice. it is not the 5* luxury hotel that the rasa sayong next door proves to be as part of shangri-la, but is a good middle ground for a family. the decor was ok, but seemed to be a bit too much like it was taken from an ikea magazine with a few random seaside accents thrown here and there. having just been in thailand, i think that penang's northerly neighbor of phuket is a better value for the money, personally, where the same price can purchase a genuine 5* experience.

A Great Stay at Golden Sands.... not an 'old hotel' at all.”

The last time we visited Golden Sands were more than 30 years ago for our honeymoon. I couldn't remember the service level then, but Golden Sands staff were helpful the minute we stepped in. After self-drove from airport to Batu Ferringghi for about an hour plus (lost our way once in a while), we are ushered to the cool station to check-in in comfort. The hotel room faces the swimming pool / sea, and the view is spectacular. The breakfast is excellent, as we have many choices. In catering to the young family customers, Golden Sands wins hands down, but senior couple like us did not feel we were in a 'noisy' place, as the the breakfast area is big enough to cater for different 'pockets' of age group. The F&B staff were also very helpful and very cheerful in engaging different customers.

Great hotel; pool, gardens and staff”

pool; 9 hole golf course on grounds, friendly staff
beach is not good for walking, but affords a pretty view

We enjoyed the seaview rooms overlooking the pool and ocean. The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. The breakfast buffet is excellent, although if you are craving pork bacon or ham, you'll find the layout is catering to "halal" food only. The small par 3 nine hole golf course located between the Golden Sands and the other Shangri La resort nearby was fun and easy to play even for beginners. Cost was only 20 ringgit.

Comfortable resort style hotel in great location”

Included breakfast, cool lounge, friendly and helpful staff

The breakfast was great with plenty of choice and available until late morning. Complementary shuttle bus service into George Town saved on lengthy bus rides and taxi. The resort is more family than solo traveller/couple oriented but I enjoyed the warm relaxed feel of Golden Sands. The pool, beach and lawn areas were great for relaxing. The location was handy with outdoor restaurants, shops and night markets close by. The hotel staff were attentive and friendly and helped me arrange a fixed price taxi to Penang Airport and web check in for my next flight.
