poor and overpriced”

friendly staff

after having traveled through vietnam and cambodia, i am still amazed at the value for money in myanmar. i chose the ‘golden valley inn’, because it is relatively ‘cheap’ at 60 USD and the reviews were not too bad. for 60 USD you can get a really nice hotel in other south east asian countries, not so in myanmar. the golden valley inn is close to inya lake, which is ok for the airport, but maybe not a too good location for sightseeing. i had booked a superior room online the day before. first, the lady at the reception wanted to give me a room on the ground floor with painted windows, so no light, which one could open to face the opposite concrete wall. i asked if this was really a superior room, she replied yes, so i asked to see a standard room. after which the lady thought about it and changed the room. so, don’t take it for granted that just because you booked a superior room it will be one! i was then assigned a room on the first floor. looked ok, ‘funny’ enough the lights for the room have to be switched on/off outside the room! so if you wake up in the middle of the night you can’t switch on the light unless you open the door of your room and look for the switch in the corridor....the bathroom actually had no light at all. there was dust everywhere in the room as there were some building works just opposite and i found several ants on the bed - i actually felt them. you get what you pay for? not really. i knew i wouldn’t get a luxury room in myanmar for this price, but honestly, even 60 USD is too much for such a bad quality. myanmar’s real treasure is its people, they are always friendly and smiley, wherever you go. so is the staff here. so, for that only the two points.

Simple hotel in a smal street near the US embassy”

Quiet location

Staff speaks barely any English. Reasonably comfortable mattress. Downstairs they have a restaurant, the menu features a long list of cocktails, but the staff was unable to make even one of them. They have a computer with internet connection in the lobby as well as wireless internet, but both are so slow it is virtually impossible to download even small documents, therefore unsuitable for business travelers. Bathroom floor was constantly covered in water (not sure from where it leaked. As currently the demand for accomodation in Yangon is very high, the prices (and this hotel is certainly no exception) are too high for what you get.

The worst hotel experience of my life”

Leaving, deciding never to return

Without doubt the worst of my life. I travel extensively to all corners of the world and like to stay in small, friendly hotels for the budget conscious. I am rarely disappointed. However at the Golden Valley Inn the staff were completely indifferent. The staff could usually be found huddling round the computer which is supposed to be for guests. The food at the restaurant was absolutely awful. I’m a big fan of Asian food and of course Burmese, but they made no effort and on the last night I decided to bring a snack home rather than go through that experience again.

Memorable, staff were very helpful”

Helpful staff, food was good, location was not bad.

It's a simple place, you can't expect much. The beds were comfy, air-con was loud. The bathroom was old with cigarette stains on the tub. But all in all, a good place to stay if you are looking for something affordable. The staff were very friendly and helpful, going out of their way to get cabs, give directions even though their command of English was very basic. The restaurant/bar had really nice food, well stacked beer and liquor. I would definitely say that it was a memorable experience, nothing bad, just could have been better but I guess you can't ask much for a budget hotel. Would I stay there again or recommend someone? Yes, I think I would but if you have a bigger budget, you are better off looking at higher standard hotels.

Poor hotel nice staff”

staff being helpful to solve problems

Hotel staff is very nice and helpful but the information on the website is not complete: The standard rooms do not have hot water!!! Price far too high for this! The room is next to the kitchen --> smells, talking etc. We have been upgraded which was nice as we haven't been aware that hot water is only available in superior rooms. The difference between standard and superior room is not big (but the hot water). In the standard room you will not find the advertised coffee/tea maker, mini bar, bathrobes, hair dryer etc. Actually not all of this have been in the superior room either. Garden is no garden in the sense of "Garden". It is nice but there is no grass or anything. Actually it is the open space for the restaurant where you can relax, eat and drink while sitting outside but under a roof. It is ok, but a bit out of the city centre which means you have to take a taxi to go to the main sights.

spacious room, kindness, cheap

You know, this hotel is far from the main area, but you need only about 2000Kyat for going to the centle(like "Shwedagon Pagoda") You can not connect with wi-fi line. They have only one computer. If you want to connect with wi-fi at cheap hotel, I reccomend another like a gest house. But the room of this hotel has a refrigerator and a doresser also.

Friendly and helpful staff

an old building but they are trying their best with what they have to work with. good size room. the bed linens and towels were clean, the bed was big and comfortable, the bathroom had a lot of natural light and hot water, the aircon was noisy but worked. you might have to ask them to turn the water on when you arrive. the room was too dark, windows opaqued, needs more lighting or lamps. wifi was slow and at night it was turned off, but came on again in the morning.

Hotel is in desperate need for renovation”

Staff attitude

Internet was virtually non existent, WiFi yes, but internet mostly off... Window-Airconditioner - too old - too warm - extremely noisy. For a business traveller definitely a no-no, unless you don't rely on internet connectivity No international TV channels Breakfast no standard It was marketed as a boutique hotel with WiFi, suitable for business, but this hotel is at most suitable for back-packers who don't expect any standard. As such it is overpriced. My bathroom was broken (can't hang the shower-head, which was completely clogged up with chalk) Bathtub had seen better days - and sides were loose from the wall - so that's where the water went - smelly.

Hotel needs serious renovation”

Can't name any good thing

Breakfast was bad - no buffet - rice and an egg and instant coffee... No Wifi in the room, Internet in lobby did not work 95% of the time (can use whatsapp sometimes but that is all). For the rest internet connectivity completely useless - not even powerful enough to use company email. Bathroom was clean, but completely worn down, in disrepair (can't hang the completely clogged off shower-head), no shower-curtain, bathtub loose and not sealed properly Electricity was not 24 hours Air conditioner not working properly - room not very cool - very noisy (very old window unit) - rattling TV no english channels - only 1 movie channel (I had to re-tune the TV myself) Staff means well but don't speak English properly In this state the hotel is not worth more than $20-$30 USD/night, even by Myanmar standards.

This hotel is located far from the city center and the pagodas. It is crowded with Chinese guests which are noisy, smoking everywhere. You know these fellows. So where they appear better avoid those places except you are one of them. This city has better hotels to offer. Just follow the US and German tourist busses to Chatrium or other 5 star down town hotels.

Les chambres standart n'ont pas d'eau chaude et sont au Rez de chaussée avec fenêtre opaque. Les chambres supérior ont une fenêtre mais vue sur un chantier. Les draps sont tous tachés.
