Not bad
Food, food, price
Not bad if you're looking for a good feed and a bed for the night. Or if you're just looking for somewhere to have dinner, stop in here!

A Little Disappointing.
Location to reasonable beach walk or long hiking. Ocean View (if you have the front rooms). Restaurant food excellent.
It was our last 2 night stay after 23 nights on South Island and we were used to large Motel rooms and our own en-suite facilities, so it was rather horrid to suddenly be somewhere having to share shower's and toilet's. Rooms are rather cramped and our room was not made up while we were out after the first night. Our room had a shared balcony which was nice but sadly the weather didn't allow us to use it. Restaurant food excellent and staff friendly and courteous.

Lovely room with great view
Great hotel in a beautiful location. We found it easy to relax here.
We booked this hotel based on Agoda reviews and were pleased we did. The area is a pleasant drive from Christchurch city with lovely scenery nearby as well as the gorgeous bay view from the hotel. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. As long as you realise the toilets are seperate and shared, it really wasn't an issue especially considering the reasonable price. The place is freshly painted and simply, but beautifully decorated. We paid extra and had the king bed bay view room with fireplace, which is a much bigger room. The staff were mostly very helpful but we were a little disappointed with our dinner meals at restaurant downstairs -chicken wings over cooked, actually burnt. The paella was such a shame, as the seafood in it looked great, but this dish was so heavily peppered that it wasn't pleasant. Staff didn't ask how our meals were and we were tired so didn't fuss but should have. Hopefully this was an isolated incident though, as the restaurant seems to have a great reputation - locals raved about it. I only mention this, as both meals had issues and I loved this hotel and so want them to succeed! The continental breakfast was simple but sufficient. I was thankful that they happily supplied gluten free bread for me.

A great hotel, if you don't await ensuited rooms
Cleanness, 20 minutes drive to Christchurch, great view, good food
The rooms are not ensuited. But if you are comfortable with this, the Governors Bay Hotel is a great tip. It is very clean, the staff is familiar and you have direct access to the Bar and Restaurant which serves really good food. We were there for four nights to be close to Christchurch. From Govenors Bay to Christchurch it's just a 20 minutes drive by car. The View is great, even in the night. The rooms are equipped with Wireless Internet, a Flatscreen TV, a washbasin and a queen-size bed. You also have access to the balcony with its great view to the Governors Bay. The Hotel has two separate showers and two toilets. There is also a Laundry with a dryer for your clothes and a parking lot for your car. You can have a continental breakfast in a small room on the floor wich is equipped with coffee-making-facilities or outside on the balcony. Give it a try!

Great location (if you have a balcony room)
balcony overlooking bay, nice small village, close enough to be a 'city / airport hotel' but in the country
Pros - Hospitable hosts - Newly decorated rooms - Nice linen - Great balcony - free breakfast cuts no corners (i.e. nice bread!) - great coffee from the cafe across the road! Cons - Shared bathrooms (the building is old & the layout not ideal) - Shared balcony (big balcony with multi rooms from it - No bathrobes....stupid as shared bathrooms! I haven't stayed in a shared bathroom hotel for a long, long time. I did this by accident this time. it was fine as we woke up late (landed at midnight, in hotel at 1am...) so everyone else had left. If we'd have been there competing with others for the 2 showers it would have been pretty bad...esp. as there were no bath robes!

Clean and comfy but location
good view
It's a bit noisy due to their bar downstairs, however, its also your convenience. The shared bathrooms are clean (maybe because of their only 6 rooms. One thing to worry is you have to drive all the way along the hills with edges.
