Great Hanok stay experience!”
I found out I left my mobile phone inside the taxi upon arrival at the guesthouse. Mrs Kim, the owner of the Gowoondang immediately helped me to locate my phone by making a call (spoke in Korean so i have no idea who she called). Half an hour later, her English speaking son came to help as well, followed by Mr Kim who speaks perfect Chinese. I lost hope in getting my phone back but surprise surprise...two hours later the taxi driver came back with my mobile phone. It wasn't the value of the phone that matters but the amount of photos I took for my past 5 days in Busan prior to arriving in Seoul. Feel grateful to Mr Kim and his family. Mrs Kim a perfect cook too! Would definitely recommend Gowoondang to those who wanna have a hanok stay experience!
Convenient location and friendly owners”
Unlike a lot of the other Korean guesthouses we walked by during our trip, you don't need to walk uphill to reach the place. Gowoondang is just right off a main road. The owners are very friendly. Breakfasts are always excellent. Location is very convenient. There is a Ginseng chicken soup place right across the main road. Loads of small Korean eateries around. And western comforts like Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Seven-Eleven and Popeyes Fried Chicken are within 5 min reach. There is also a pharmacy right at the #3 Gyeongbokgung subway station exit if you need any antacid from the fiery food. And obviously, Gyeongbokgung palace is just a few blocks away. It is a bit hard to find at first though. If you take the 6011 airport bus from ICN, get off at the "Gyeongbokgung stop". You would be on "Sajik-ro". Walk forward to the intersection and turn left onto "Jahamun-ro". Cross to the opposite corner of the intersection and walk up "Jahamun-ro". Each side street on the road has a sign with a number and you should be on the even number side or the Dunkin Donuts side. Turn right when you see "Jahamun-ro 8-gil". You should see Euro Gastronomic Deli. Turn into the alleyway along the left wall of the Deli. You should be able to see the entrance to the guesthouse. I wish the owners would post pictures of the street corners on their website though. One more thing, if you happen to stay over Sunday, the owner would enthusiastically invite you to hike with him. It's a sandy trail dotted with remnants of the old city wall and the top is higher than Seoul Tower. The view was magnificent, but remember to wear good hiking shoes.
Traditional, accommodating, comfortable, fantastic”
Recently traveled to Seoul with my boyfriend. I was attending a conference in the city for a couple days. We decided against a home stay and went for a guest house, but were immediately stuck on which to choose, as there are many options. My girlfriend kept coming back to the Go Woon Dang Guest House, despite the relatively minute amount of reviews about the property on Trip Advisor (Agoda has plenty though). Well, fellow travelers, this is the place to be in Seoul. The hanok guest house is the perfect mix of traditional and modern - which is to say that it keeps the beautiful styling of a traditional inn while allowing for the comforts of free WiFi (which I prefer when traveling) and a hot/cold water dispenser at the ready. We stayed in the Gold Room, which features a private bathroom. The sleeping style is on the floor, with a thin mattress and comfortable bedding. Our room also featured an efficient AC unit (it was hot in June). The room was super clean and was attended to each day while we were out. The other four rooms in the guest house share a public bathroom on the opposite side of the courtyard. I could see this being an issue in the winter for guests, but it's a small price to pay for what you get here. The room is one thing, but it isn't all that you are getting for your money. First let's discuss the service. Mr. and Mrs. Kim are amazing hosts. Mr. Kim speaks Korean, Mandarin, Japanese and English. His hospitality is through-the-roof good and he assisted us with many things, including recommendations, directions, travel arrangements - and many times he'd relax in the courtyard with us and ask about our time in Seoul. His wife is polite, all smiles, and creates the most amazing breakfasts for guests. It's nice to be able to stay somewhere and have your breakfast included in the price, as well as be something to look forward to each morning. We were sad when we had to leave early in the AM one morning (prior to the 8:30am breakfast service in the common
experience traditional of korea”
This is the place if you want to experience taditional korean house. The owner is very helpfull. And the breakfast is so memorable. They cooked for us and eat together in family room. We stay for 2 nights here. You must try gowoondang hanok for your expereince visiting seoul
Great hospitality !!!!”
This is a more than 100 years old Hanok. It is a very beautiful place and I stayed in the Gold Room which came with a private bathroom. Room is very clean. Mr Kim the owner is very friendly and helpful, and can communicate fluently in Mandarin and English. Breakfast is traditional Korean breakfast prepared by his wife as compared to others guesthouse that usually provides breads and juice. Mr Kim's wife even took the initiative to hang our washed clothes outside for drying after seeing it in our bathroom. We are very touched with her action. Definitely a must-stay when you travel to Seoul!
Highly recommended Guesthouse”
We stayed in Gowoondang 4 days and 3 nights and lived in a Private room. Air condition and floor heating kept us warm in freezing nights, the bathroom was very clean but sometime had bad smell, it may caused by the age of the house. The breakfast was traditional and delicious, provided energy to us before whole day sightseeing and shopping. The owner are hospitality and can speak English and Mandarin. He recommended some interesting restaurants near the guesthouse, which was a great experience.
A quiet sanctuary in a busy city”
My husband and I only had 1 full day in Seoul and were keen on experiencing it by staying in a traditional Korean house. When we arrived, the owner, Mr. Kim, greeted us (he speaks very good English) and even upgraded our room to one with our own bathroom and shower. Everything was very clean and tidy! Mrs. Kim made us a traditional Korean breakfast, which was amazing - the food was so flavorful and fresh! The location of the Hanok was fantastic! - walking distance to little shops, restaurants, the palace and public transport. The owners are extremely kind and helpful people. The day we were leaving to head back to the airport, Mr. Kim helped us to make sure we got seats on a very crowded bus. We were both so grateful for his extra efforts. Will definitely stay here again next time we visit South Korea.
A nice guesthouse downtown”
We had a good experience during our stay. Although the room is not big, it's cozy and gave us the experience of how living in a Hanok would be. The host are polite and helpful. And the breakfast time enabled us to have small talks with people from different countries, which I think was the most beautiful thing during the stay. I will recommend this Guesthouse to those who want to experience a genuine Korean living style in their trip.
Very different to anywhere i have stayed in Seoul!”
Excellent stay here, it was a really nice change of scenery since everywhere i have stayed in Seoul was hotels! This cute little traditional Hanok was such a wonderful experience and i will never forget my stay here! The hosts are an older couple and they are so so kind and attentive to make your stay as good as possible! and the traditional korean breakfast!!! omg!!!!! absolutely amazing to say the least! will definitely stay here again!
Best guesthouse in Seoul”
My room does not have floor heating, the owner turned on the air condition for me before I was back, so the room was very warm, I can have a good rest after tired shopping. I also love the traditional breakfast made by owner in very morning, it was so delicious. The location of the guesthouse is also good, only 5 minutes to Subway station. There has lots interesting shops on the way to subway station, we bought a box of fried chicken one night which was really good taste. I think next time to Seoul, I will choose it again. This guesthouse is worth of money.
What impressed me most is the hospitality of the host families. The host can speak very good Chinese and his son speaks fluent English. They are always ready to answer your questions and remind you of all confusing transportation. The Hostess serves delicious Korean traditional food for breakfast. I stayed there for four mornings, and each day the meals served are different. The rooms are very comfortable and clean with not only traditional decoration but also modern facilities.Lastly, this guesthouse is located just at the very center of Seoul. It is very convenient for sightseeing and shopping.
Nice Korean style, hospitable owner”
Quite newly opened Hanok traditional house. The owner can speak Korean, Japanese, Chinese and English. His son is in charge of daily operation and can speak quite good English too. It's from Korean traditional house so it's a quite unique experience. Breakfast was prepared by owner's wife, so delicious! I will book there again for my next trip in Seoul
Execellent Service and Breakfast”
Perfectly satisfying and would return in next visit to Seoul. Hospitable owners and the Owner's son was extremely helpful in giving advise and directions to places of interest. Also recommended good eating places for Korean specialities. It was a great Korean cultural experience in Hanok stay with modern essential amenities.
Lovely traditional guesthouse with very friendly owners”
Great Korean Hanok (traditional guesthouse) experience, especially for newcomers to the country. Very welcoming, with friendly and helpful owners Mr. Kim and his wife, who also cooks the fantastic complementary breakfast every morning. Also very comfortable, warm, and cozy (we were there in the winter) rooms. Highly recommended!
Favourite experience in Seoul”
I would really recommend a night or 2 here for anyone coming to Seoul. Staying at a hanok was a fantastic cultural experience and it is a memory we will always treasure. The host family was absolutely lovely and were very helpful and welcoming. Great English skills.
Seoul Seoul very nice”
사람이 중지를해야? Unfortunately all the many hours of Korean soap operas did not prepare us to answer this phrase. A simple yes, would have stopped the bus and we would have never had to be driven to GHG in the back of a police car, but I digress. Located down an alley in a very convenient neighborhood, GHG is a great way to experience a traditional hanok stay. This place is great for the simple traveller that wants a new experience. Most of the rooms have a shared courtyard and bathroom, but there is a room with a private bath. My favorite thing about this stay was the breakfast. Everyday Mrs. Kim prepares a simple Korean breakfast that is served sitdown with all of the Hanok's guest. It's a great way to meet other travelers and exchange travel notes. Mr. Kim plays host at breakfast before he heads off to his office job. Have any questions? Ask Mr. Kim, he knows everything!
personalized service from a caring family”
the family who run the guesthouse are wonderful people - the son (kooman) helped with very clear transit directions from the subway to the guesthouse. a 5 minute walk. he also helped me with dinner on my first night since i arrived late - walked me over to a local restaurant, helped me order and talked a bit to make sure i was ok for the night. then he followed up with an email the next day. his english is perfect after having gone to college in the us for 7 years. his parents (mr. and mrs. kim) are equally kind hosts and attentive to the details. as a total minimalist i loved the rooms - but it may not be for everyone. the korean breakfast was amazing and to share it with the fellow guests at one table enhanced the experience. the travelers from singapore were a fun group and a japanese traveler was very sweet in helping me out with travel information. the surrounding neighborhood has very interesting architecture, alleyways, shops, galleries, cafes, etc that one could get lost in for days.
Amazing experience in a traditional Korean house ”
It was an amazing experience to stay during the first part of our visit in S. Korea, in a traditional hanok. Our room was the one with the private bathroom so it was nice not to have to wake up in the middle of the night to go across the yard if needed. The common bathrooms were also very clean. It was a bit hard to get used to sleeping on the floor and if you are a light sleeper maybe you should bring some ear-plugs because you can hear everything that happens outside. We absolutely LOVED the traditional Korean breakfast! The owner was always very helpful and tried to make us feel welcomed. His son speaks good English so it is a plus if you have any further questions to speak with him. Also, make sure not to go back too late at night, because the owner stays up and waits for your return :)
Centrally located traditional hanok”
It was a nice experience to stay in a traditional hanok. This place was warm and cozy and each morning there was an amazing Korean breakfast served family style. The family was very helpful when my teenaged son got lost on the metro! I did find, however, that sleeping on mats on the floor, for me, was not particularly comfortable. I really would have liked a second mat underneath. It was only October and it was quite cold scooting across the courtyard to go the bathroom. I wouldn't have wanted to do that in December. I'm glad I stayed there for the experience but won't be rushing back.
Great Hanok Experience”
Booked this hanok to experience what it's like staying in a korean traditional house. The bed was not exactly comfortable and need some getting used to. I had to share the bathroom which is located outside, a little inconvenient however for a night or 2 it is ok. The bathroom is kept very clean. Overall, I had a great stay. The breakfast provided by Mrs Kim was fantastic. Mr Kim is very friendly and spoke English, Mandarin and Japanese. Though the hanok was a little difficult to find, it is located centrally, with restaurants located all around the hanok. I would highly recommend Goowoondang to travellers who would want to experience hanok stay.
