It’s dated, but the room had everything I needed, and was spacious.

Love Launceston ”
My husband and friends had a wonderful weekend in Launceston. We stayed at the Hotel Grand Chancellor & it was fantastic. It’s located in a very central and accessible position. Close to many shops and restaurants. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed the nightly happy hour and Aldo the delicious buffet breakfast. It would have been great to have the breakfast included in the price we paid for the rooms, Our only criticism would be that as there were 4 of us (2 couples) it would be convenient for all of us to get room keys- we were issued 1 key per room. When asked it was no problem to get another one, it was just annoying to have to ask. We will definitely re-visit Launceston and the Hotel Grand Chancellor. Go Hawks!! Jo Martin
Great Central Location and comfortable room”
we had an enjoyable 3 nights at the grand chancellor, launceston. it was a great location for walking to restaurants, shops and the city park for children's recreation. the breakfast buffet was delicious and friendly staff in the restuarant which made it easier with young children. the beds were comfortable and reasonable range of channels on the flat screen tv. the room has a large bathroom with shower over bath. only difficulty encountered was the portable a/c unit which was quite noisy, but a fairly constant noise which didn't disrupt childrens sleep.
Walking distance to everything!”
Had a very comfortable stay at the Grand Chancellor Launceston Hotel. Beds were really comfy and room was clean and welcoming. Will certainly stay there again.
Excellent location with everything we needed”
This is a lovely hotel right in the middle of Launceston. We received a great deal to stay here, and were extremely happy with our stay. In fact, we would have loved to have spent more time here. The reception staff were extremely helpful. The hotel room was fantastic and very roomy. The view from our room was lovely, from the nearby "Boags Brewery" to the surrounding hills. A recommended stay while exploring the wonderful city of Launceston.
Grand Chancellor met our expectations to a very high standard. The foyer was inviting and elegant, the reception staff provided excellent service, the room was very clean and spacious and the view was pleasant. Yes the building is a bit dated, but one can see that it was once a Grande Hotel and very luxurious. It is very well maintained. I liked the proximity to the town centre, the river, Seaport and Cataract Gorge. The included breakfast was delicous, with a vast array of choice. I would most definately stay here again - no hesitation and I would also really like to recommend it to anyone who is after a Hotel that is more than just avarage. Job well done to all the staff we came across.
Our review of the Hotel Grand Chancellor”
Our experience staying at the Grand Chancellor was very good. Staff were friendly and helpful, hotel was very clean and beds were comfortable. Location was ideal and centre to most things. The only negative was the variety on the room service menu. This is only a small thing but while there were pizzas and BLTs, there wasn't many dinner dishes to choose from. This would not prevent us from staying there again when next in Launceston.
Impressed with Refurbished Rooms”
only had one night in launceston so wanted something that was well priced and that would sleep 3 people in the room. we were planning on being out sightseeing so intended to spend little time in the room. based on reviews i had fairly low expectations for this hotel. however, i was pleasantly surprised upon arrival. refurbished room and bathroom were modern. only slight issue was my son dropped something down the back of the sink and upon retrieving it i discovered that housekeeping obviously hadn't cleaned there for a while! this was disappointing as i am very picky when it comes to cleanliness and had been very impressed up until this point. despite that i probably would stay there again as i think it offered great value for the price we paid.
Best hotel in Launceston”
after a week on the road it was great to finish our trip at the grand chancellor. just that feeling of a little more luxury. we got a fantastic deal from agoda with a great room for a least half the going rate.
Great value, great service, great location”
In a nutshell, fabulous. We stayed the week before and was so impressed we returned and weren't disappointed. Not like one of the opposition, we usually try something new all the time, but from now on it will be GC when we require accomm in Launceston.
Great hotel ”
The good hotel in Launceston Tasmania. The hotel is in city and near the shopping area. You can shopping around the hotel. The room is great and comfortable.
The Grand Chancellor in Hobart is spectacular so I expected a similar experience in Launceston. I was highly disappointed. It's nothing special. Fairly out of date. Room had small air-con unit but NO heat ... Bizarre. The Launceston Grand Chancellor was probably pretty awesome back in the 70's, but it appears they haven't changed much since tgen.
Very central & pleasant ”
Nice hotel, clean & convenient. In house restaurant was handy & walking distance to central Launceston, the only facility noticeably missing which the Hobart hotel has is a gymnasium.
Excellent as usual. ”
We always stay here when in Launceston, great location, the staff are friendly and helpful, clean and comfortable.
Always a reliable place to stay. Rooms are neat & clean, and staff responsive to your needs.”
You can' beat this location if you want to "get into" Launceston.
Reasonable quality for a reasonable price.”
The hotel could use a facelift and some real investment. You can see how this would have been the jewel in the crown of Launceston's grand hotels once. But alas, no more. The staff are competent and courteous (if not very speedy). We didn't try the food and room service seemed overpriced. Central air con seems like a long forgotten relic, but our room was furnished with a decent little stand alone air con machine. There's nothing really glamorous about this hotel anymore, apart from its imposing facade and marble-esque foyer. If you're in Launceston for a day or two, it's a reasonable option for a fairy reasonable price. You won't be overly disappointed, but it probably won't be the highlight of your trip.
Friendly, value-for-money but too many stars?”
We stayed here for a few days during our honeymoon. The location was convenient, easy to get to/from by car or on foot to explore Launceston. The per-night cost gives a better indication of the hotel quality than the star rating; it wasn't what I'd expect for 4-4.5 stars (aside from the foyer), but the hotel charges weren't at 4-4.5 star level either. The restaurant had a good range, particularly at breakfast. They seemed happy for people to linger a little late over breakfast, but the cutoff time for arriving for dinner was strictly observed (Tasmanians don't seem to eat late).
ok - no major complaints”
This hotel is fine although a little overpriced for what it is. It is one of the only largish hotels in Launceston and has a grand feel but the rooms are like old motel rooms. It's clean and central so no major complaints for what we needed which was a comfortable and central one night stop over.
A very good, centrally located city.”
An enjoyable four days stay. There was plenty to see in walking distance from the hotel, parks just down the road, art gallery three blocks away and shops in the City centre. The hotel is close to transport options. The Saturday farmers market is just across the road. The produce there was of very high quality and reasonably priced.
Great Hotel centrally located in Launceston. Great rooms, service, restaurant etc.
Great location and big room”
the hotel is centrally located where is close to everything, we could walk to the city centre. the room is very spacious and clean in a large size and . the lady from the reception had great local knowledge and was able to recommend a number of places and attractions to us. the room rate was very reasonable. we can also rent a car from avis inside the hotel lobby. but seems the hotel doesnt provide shower gel unless you make a request.
