CLASS - "in the sticks!"”
I stayed one night only at thenGrand Kecubung Hotel -- upon return from a klotok tour up the Konyer River, to see the Orangutans (and Macaques and Proboscis Monkeys). I went without any dining experience at Grand Kecubung-- my return flight demanded a departure before the kitchen opened. Upon looking at the room, I did ask for a second towel... and after a phone reminder-prompt, it was delivered post-haste. The AC was welcomed, the TV had good reception, with English-speaking channels, the shower had hot water-- there was an electric kettle for coffee*tea*hot water. The bed was comfy, the linens clean. ALL was GOOD! There was a large pool, which I did not get to use-it looked so inviting! The staff were friendly, tho with very little English skills. I would definitely recommend Grand Kecubung Hotel to fellow travelers!

Good hotel in Pangkalan Bun”
We stayed at the Grand Kecubung Hotel ahead of starting our Klotok tour in Tanjung Puting. We found the hotel to be comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. It is only a 3 star hotel so it's not perfect but choices are limited in Pangkalan Bun and we were perfectly happy with our stay here. We booked one of the superior rooms overlooking the pool and it was fairly quiet so I would recommend staying in that part of the hotel. Overall we'd recommend this for a short stay in Pangkalan Bun.

Adequate hotel”
I believe that the Blue Kecubung has held the undisputed crown as most upmarket hotel in Pangkalan Bun for a number of years, but there is a recently opened Swisotel that may challenge for that. The hotel was fine, service was OK, breakfast was welcome. We stayed here to have an airconditioned room with a bed and shower in between our klotong trip to the national park (highly recommended) and a flight the next morning and it served that purpose well.

Grand value for money”
We arrived from upriver 3 days of on boat basic. The hotel staff gave us a friendly welcome. The rooms were spacious and clean with A.C. and had english language channels on TV. Beds spotless and very comfy. Hotel pool area is nice. Restaurant a tad pricey but the food was ok and the service good. For the price it is very good value for money. We would definately stay there again.

Lovely place to spend time”
This is the place to stay in Pangkalan Bun. The garden side rooms are quiet and offer a lovely view. I stayed in the old wing, which I thought was very comfortable. The room was large with big windows. Nonetheless, I was told on checking out that I should try the new wing next time, which is even nicer. I was there in the dry season but nonetheless experienced a torrential downpour that was a wonder to behold. The staff can put together competent English. There is no elevator in the old wing. The restaurant can make delicious local specialties. The breakfast is fully adequate, though not the type of lavish buffet found in major hotels in the major cities. The airport is only a short ride away. The city has a few interesting monuments, though the main reason to go is to spend time with the orangutans up river.

Government turns off the electricity from 6 to 9pm EVERY day, so....”
In Pangkalan Bun, Kalimantan (and other towns maybe?) the government rations electricity by turning power off to the whole town from 6 to 9pm every day. This hotel has its own generator which is supposed to switch on seamlessly when the grid electricity turns off- well, it broke down the first night we were there (and no-one told us about the grid power going every evening until our second night) and we sat in the dark not knowing what was going on while the electricity sputtered on and mostly off for about 1.5 hours. After which the hotel staff managed to get a second generator working. The second night the temporary generator failed again (but we were ready with our flashlights this time) and it took about an hour to produce electricity. The apologetic staff offered us a candle for the room, but that was after about 55 minutes and then the power returned, so we didn't use it. Our third night had no electricity problems. Each night the restaurant was open until 11pm so I got a tasty dinner every night. I do have a strong complaint about the design of the bathrooms in the superior pool view rooms: it was as if a poor architect student had designed the bathrooms! The sink was way too high for me (and I am tall compared to most Indonesians) , the lip on the walk-in shower was too low and water spilled out onto the bathroom floor, wetting the bathmat , which swelled up, making it difficult to open the shower door after you'd finished. The lighting in the bathroom was too low. There were no hooks to hang anything on in the bathroom, nor towel racks, so clothes left on the floor risked getting wet. The staff were very prompt in responding to our requests for another bathmat or an extra pair of bedroom slippers for example. The magnetic card reader on our door lock failed the second afternoon and being unable to fix it they moved us down the hall to another, identical room, whose bathroom had all the same design failures I mentioned above. The air-conditioning worked

Comfortable hotel”
We stayed at this hotel before our kelotok tour. Got a AMAZING deal with Agoda, so very happy with everything. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a trouble with WiFi connection a couple of times but the staff tried to fix it straight away. Breakfast was included and it was ok.

undergoing refurb”
We stayed in 2 different rooms either side of our trip to Tanjung. The deluxe garden room (not the garden but road!) was in the new part & very nice, even a bath. The standard room was in the old part & comfortable. The hotel will be lovely once it is finished. We were not disturbed from any renovations. We did not know it was being renovated when we booked as no mention on Agoda or hotel website. Photos misleading but we had a pleasant stay & restaurant food was excellent especially as we are veggies.

Superb, very nice”
Superb, as I walk in I was suprised how nice the hotel is, I was greeted by friendly staff with quick check in. My room was spacious, clean, newly refurbished, facing the swimming pools with green surroundings. The restaurant has outdoor sitting with sails, truly I felt like I was in Australia, try most of the foods at the Resto I would say everything was yummy. This is definitely my place to stay when I'm in Pangkalan Bun

Its probably the best hotel in town”
I got a good deal when i booked here, so I can't comment too much on the price. The place was still being finished when I stayed, but the rooms were very nice and I enjoyed the pool. Most people don't seem to explore the town, but I think its worth the walk. I only stayed fro a night, but the hotel had everything I wanted as I stayed overnight for my plane the next day.

THE place to stay in Pangkalanbun”
A very pleasant stay and great value for money when discounted price available. The staff were always very friendly, the food in the restaurant overlooking the pool was great. I particularly liked the steamed kakap fish, though the breakfast could do with a few more pastries. This went downhill during my 2 stays, however, this maybe due to some guests acting like pigs and carrying out lots of food from the buffet for later consumption. I returned and I will go back again.

Good after Jungle Times”
We had a lovely big room with great facilities. A great place to relax and recharge our batteries after 3 days in the Borneo Jungle. Would recommend. A lot closer in town than the other fancy hotels in Pangkalanbun.

Nice hotel with western influence”
Enjoyed our stay. Very obviously being updated which understandably is a slow process in the poor economy of the area. Their vision is easily seen and although some areas still have a way to go and construction is ongoing this is well worth the stay. The new swimming pool is beautiful as are the people working in the hotel and living nearby. I have no doubt that this will become a fantastic hotel in the near future.

Basic hotel but fine for a short stay”
Blue Kecubung has an initial impression of grandure from the hotel lobby but unfortunately that's the best part of this hotel. The rooms are large and clean but our "deluxe" room was fairly old and shabby. We had breakfast but didn't eat much after seeing flies on most of the food! However, the hotel staff were friendly and helpful and this hotel is fine for a short stay. Easy 5 minute walk to the centre of the town.

Trying to be high end but not succeeding yet”
We stayed two night at this hotel -- from afar and from photos, it appears rather sleek, modern, and new. Up close, there are lots of chips and dents, poor construction and design choices, and mediocre facilities. Although we requested a non-smoking room, on both occasions, the staff escorted us to a room reeking of cigarette smoke, one still with cigarette butts in the ashtray! It took some firm insistence to get them to offer us different rooms, and although the front desk staff told us the place was completely full, and that there were no other rooms to be had, they eventually escorted us to the newer wing which did have a few rooms without evidence of cigarette smoke. Be aware of this ruse, and do insist on better rooms if you are given something substandard to begin with. Other than this negative experience, the rest of the staff were accommodating. Do know that rooms designated as non-smoking may not be, and even the lobby, which was crowded on our second stay, and where they served the breakfast buffet, can be cloudy with cigarette smoke. We opted to take the food to our rooms in order to eat and breathe simultaneously. The cleaning service left something to be desired - there were dead flies on the window sills and disgustingly, we discovered that one towel had an old remnant of a piece of soap stuck to it. Not sure if it was not cleaned or not cleaned well, but either way, not acceptable. The pool did come in handy and we used it twice, but be aware that local folks can pay to just use the pool, so the first time we were there, all the poolside seating was taken. Food at the restaurant was fair, and better than expected, but of course on the slightly pricier side. Not much in town, so we kept to the hotel most of the time. Judging by the look of the other hotels in town, this might be the best choice, though it was far from excellent.

Good Hotel”
Check in and check out was easy on both days that we checked in and out. Restaurant in basement was ok. Very cheap food cooked fresh each day. Both breakfast and dinner good. However the hotel is not near the town centre or markets but can get taxi easily.

Good choice ”
There aren't many hotel options in the town, but this is a good choice. The rooms have everything you need, the pool is nice, overall it is a good modern option. Be aware the wifi isn't great and the food service can be a little slow, but it is a good choice to stay in before a visit to the national park.

Good clean hotel --- but towels are dirty”
I have stayed in GK many times. It is a good small and clean hotel, reasonably priced and good location. The only issue i have is that their towels are not properly laundried. They stink of "old used towel", and it is simply only caused by not washing them in hot-water laundry machines. I hope the Hotel will improve this.

Double charged for a meal, and no response to emails”
While initially drawn to the Kecubung by its pool and the positive reviews left by earlier travellers, on returning to the UK I was disappointed to find first that my credit card had been double charged for a meal in the hotel's restaurant, and then that the management failed to respond to any of my numerous emails and messages requesting a refund. As I now find myself with no option but to invoke a chargeback action against the hotel, I can only recommend that you consider staying across town at the Swiss Belinn before your klotok cruise, rather than at the Grand Kecubung.

O.K. option after/before trip to Borneo ”
This is a hotel that may had been really good some years ago. Today is a normal hotel were you will sleep well if you are not close to the karaoke. You can also enjoy the fitness center and the swimming pool. There were some things that weren't working but the staff did their best to minimise the shortcomings of the hotel. It is a short walk to the river and to the center of the city. I think it is a good place to stay, just a bit overpriced.
