Has colonial history but needs refurbishment
This venerable old establishment has clearly stood the test of time in Colombo as a well-known hotel but I think it needs to do a bit more if it wants to compete with other hotels in the city. Walking into the lobby, the first thing that hits you is a rather odd, musty, damp smell which is a bit off-putting. The decor is, as expected, quite oldfashioned, white painted walls would be more appealing than the dark yellowy cream painted walls that run through out the hotel, which makes it long very dull and uninspiring. Our deluxe room was very spacious, again, a rather musty smell in it but it was clean. The bed was a good size and comfortable but the aircon was noisy. Kettle and refreshments were provided. The bathroom, again, very large but old-fashioned with a shower over the bath, sadly the shower was pretty useless. All the staff were very friendly and we had dinner (buffet ) in the Harbour room, plenty of choice at a reasonable price, same place for breakfast and a large Sri Lankan breakfast choice with reasonable Western options. We stayed here as our last night and for that purpose it was ok. If staying in Colombo longer I would pick a more modern hotel. We are in our early-sixties but it felt old, even to us so don't think it would attract younger visitors. I really think it would do a lot of good to repaint it, that will still allow its Colonial past to show but it needs to keep pace with the times and the huge number of hotels available in the city. It would be a shame if it closed but I wouldn't stay here again.

Old - needs update
Really large rooms. Aircon works but Windows old so lots of noise from street and light filters into room. Old bathrooms with smells from piping. Location is near some great restaurants and shops. Long walks to the room and old elevators. Hotel did box breakfast when we left early for airport. Nothing to write home about.

Grand Old Lady
Well worth staying in this relic from the old colonial times. All other hotels in the area are soulless glass and chromium without caracter. The breakfast room with the fantastic view over the harbour! And the breakfast itself was outstanding. Very accomodating staff. The location is perfect.
