Gueliz is part of the new city (ville nouvelle), which was laid out by the French in the early 20th century. Gueliz makes up one half of the new city (the other half is Hivernage), and it is where most of Marrakech’s businesses operate. An extensive selection of mid-range hotels in Gueliz is available, balancing the more up-market offerings of Hivernage.
The fact that so many businesses are headquartered in Gueliz makes this area especially popular with business travelers, who spend the day in office high-rises followed by evenings in area restaurants and hotels. Plenty of modern infrastructure is on hand, and local executives regularly entertain visiting business partners and colleagues in the commercial district of Gueliz.
The shopping scene in Gueliz is also modern, and visitors can easily reach the designer boutiques and luxury department stores of Rue de la Liberté. Another important thoroughfare is Avenue Mohammed V, which cuts across Place 16 du Novembre, where there are several comfortable Gueliz hotels.
While most of the sightseeing is in the Marrakech medina, commercial tourists are still likely to spend some time in Gueliz. The local cafés are great places to sample local cuisine in a classy environment. A few new dance clubs have also opened in Gueliz, or there is the Institit Français, which features classical music.
