Beautiful friendly traditional guesthouse”
Rakuza is situated in the centre of the Geisha district, Gion, which also holds many festivals and is home to many great souvenir shops and shrines. Staff were good at English and very helpful - they will have a map for you to see what shops are around. I was here in winter and the heaters were great even though I have chronic bronchitis I wasn't even cold at all when I slept. Highly recommended.

very special place”
The house itself its amazing - small, cute and really old. Nicely restored, located in the coolest part of Kyoto (Gion), but also walking distance from the station. The only minus was the traffic outside our window (the other side of the house faces a quiet little street).

Unforgettable experience”
Memorable experience at the "doraemon house" alike, a very authentic Japanese house. Experienced sleep in tatami style, never imagine it would be that comfortable with the fluffy futon bed. Even we have to stay quite in here, because all of the house interior made of wood, but we do enjoy everything. The facilities even very complete, plug cable extention, hair dryer, flatening hair iron, microwave, free flow tea/coffee. Appreciate for the hospitality of their staffs, Yuki-san and Minami-san. They are very helpful!

Great hospitality”
Stayed here for 2 nights and i found the staffs very helpful. They even provided medications for those feeling unwell during their stay (note that medicines in Japan are very pricey). Location wise was just about 5-10 minutes walk to Gion.

Friendly staff”
You'll expect something between hostel style self-service but they do provide a room with good privacy, if you choose the non-shared room. A beautiful traditional Japanese style town house. Recommended.

Lovely and in the center of everything”
Very nice tho heater is kinda old. Love the room and atmosphere. Near gion and many great places in kyoto. Better buy daily pass bus to travel around.

Atmospheric place, but not so comfortable”
This is a really atmospheric place to be. The common spaces are in an authentic teahouse, full of charm. The downside is that the double room was incredibly small (just the space for a small double bed), everything is narrow and cramped, even the stairs. Obviously it was not conceived as a hotel, with people coming and going and dragging luggage around. The only window of the room was on a corridor, where guests walk to their rooms, and from which we could hear everything. We had to make up the bed ourselves, and to undo at the end. There was no available toilet on the floor, and only one shower for all the rooms. Another negative point is that we also had a lot of troubles finding the place, even with the address in hand, because the only sign to the guest house is a curtain which is withdrawn at night. All in all we enjoyed to be inside a teahouse fro one night, but in terms of practicality it is not such a good place, also far from the bus stop (have to cross the bridge).

Great stay in a nice little place right next to the Gion shopping area and the river with all the restaurants/drinking locations.

Nostalgic and comfortable stay”
The traditional Japanese style rooms reminds me of my old hometown. Even so, the facilities were modern, which was quite convenient, except that there may be some queues for during peak hours. (adjust your timing!) Overall, it was a stay worth a night or two for the experience!

My family is happy with this stay.”
Close to city. Clean and quiet surroundings. But the wooden floor is noisy at night. Room ceiling is too low for my height 1.80m, my head knocked on the ceiling bar 3 times, very painful.

Hotel Recommendation”
It is a good hotel option for those want to try traditional Japanese household style. It is very near to subway station and make it reachable in only few minutes of walk from subway station. The only unsatisfying is the room insulation is a bit poor.

Good choice for staying close to the city center”
The location of the guesthouse is quite near to the shopping area and some of the tourist hotspots. The staffs are really nice and friendly. The building, however, is quite old so there will be creaking sounds when walking in the building. But the traditional japanese room left me a good impression during my stay.
