Stayed 2 nights in April 2015

Awesome and memorable stay at Guesthouse Sakuya!”

    Service, Food, Comfort

We had a lovely 3 days 2 nights stay at Guesthouse Sakuya. After traveling around Japan for a week, our stay at Guesthouse Sakuya offered us a much welcomed respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. When we arrived, a simple phone call to the host, Watanabe-san, had him meeting us at the Kawaguchi station to pick us up. As there were too many guests arriving at the same time, we split our group of 6 into 2 and he quickly arranged for his mother to come and pick us up, rather than having us wait longer for him to drop-off and come back for us. We were already impressed with his service. We decided to have breakfast and dinner at Guesthouse Sakuya as the nearest convenience store was some distance away, and it can be pretty cold and windy at Lake Kawaguchi. We did not regret our decision! The food cooked was delicious and though simple (compared to the kaiseki ryori we had at Kyoto the night before anyway), had the taste of home as they were all homecooked. Again, their service was superb as while Watanabe-san was sharing with us places to explore around the area, we asked him where is good to have hotou noodles (a local delicacy) and he offered to get his mother to cook it for us! He said, and his wife agreed, that no one else does hotou noodles better than his mother. And it was very very delicious. Although located a distance from Lake Kawaguchiko, Guesthouse Sakuya makes your stay comfortable by ferrying you to and fro the station and guesthouse, and anywhere on the bus stop point along the lake and the guesthouse. They also have bicycles available for rental if you fancy cycling around. Guesthouse Sakuya also has 2 private onsens, so you can enjoy a private bath without the awkwardness of sharing the space with strangers. Thank you Watanabe-san and family for hosting us and for your warm service! We will definitely stay here again!

    Excellent hospitality”

Hospitality; Onsen (hot spring bath); Home-cooked meals

We stayed at Guesthouse Sakuya for 2 nights in April, in a Japanese-style room. It is a family-run business and the owner is lovely, speaks English fairly well and is more than happy to help you out with activity suggestions or driving you short distances. The guesthouse is located on the opposite side of the lake to Mount Fuji, which makes it further away from the main shops/restaurants/Kawaguchiko station, however as mentioned the staff will drive you to tourist sights or the bus stop, and pick you up again. They are happy to provide you a transfer from Kawaguchiko station on your arrival but only after 4pm - just call them from the information centre. There are two onsen which are lovely and clean, and can be booked easily for a private session. Both the onsen and all the guestrooms have a fantastic view of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko but be aware that at certain times of the year (including April) the mountain is half-covered in fog most of the day. I would definitely recommend paying a little extra for the home-cooked breakfasts and dinners at Guesthouse Sakuya (700 and 800 yen respectively) as they are delicious, authentic and convenient. We had an enjoyable, relaxing stay at Guesthouse Sakuya. I would recommend it to friends.

A piece of traditional japan, slightly off the beaten track, but definitely worth a stay”

Firstly it’s good to email them before to find out best way to get to Guesthouse Sakuya, as they can pick you up from Kawaguchiko station (25 minutes away) but only at certain times due to them being understandably busy cleaning or helping kitchen with dinners etc. Best way is to get the bus to Oishi Park on red route and ask in cafe to call Sakuya. You’ll be picked up in 15 minutes. The guesthouse is about ¥3500 in taxi ride from Kawaguchiko, which we found out after busses stop at 5:45pm. FujiQ highland is 1 stop on train from Kawguchiko but hotel may give you a lift if you’re able to call them but we left our bag in Sakuya’s car and despite emailing them 3 times we couldn’t get hold of them. Our fault for leaving bag, but they kept it safe nonetheless! Guesthouse is lovely, we had Japanese room, with futons on floor and it was great. We used the private Onsen 2 nights, so nice! Japanese dinners (4 options) and breakfast were authentic, and tasty. Room A/C partially working.

    Lovely gusthouse and great staff”

We stayed 2 nights in guesthouse Sakuya, the host and the rest of the staff are really welcoming and very nice. The place is located close to the lake but you need to take a bus or the guesthouse bus service to go to the center. The room is great with view on Mount Fuji, the common room is nice and well decorated and the onsen is a must for relaxing after a day of walk. We had our dinners at the guesthouse and the food is really good with good price. I highly recommend. Thanks to the Guesthouse Sakuya for our lovely stay.

Nice kozy and peaceful place but a little bit far”

Kozy style, private on zen, peaceful

First thing we all saw was the nice decoration and well kozy style. The owner welcomed us with warming and nice English communication. He is the mr. Everything man who did all the things fromw the owner of the guesthouse to the van driver to pick up us at the kawaguchiko station! The room is the best view that can see the mt. Fuji but unfortunately the weather that we arrived that day was s o cloudy so we couldn't see mt. Fuji clearly. Whatever we all love ryokan style room that made us feel Japanese style in everywhere. The futons is warm and soft make us nice sleep all night. The dinner and breakfast made by the owner family was Rey delicious and worth it not too expensive. We love his decoration style and how he explained us and recommended where to get good view. Surprisingly, we got the private on zen only the five of us! It is great! Luckily that we chose this guesthouse The only disadvantage was the place is a bit far from the station, except that everything was really great! We will visit Sakuya guesthouse again next time! We all luv it!

Amazing guesthouse on a beautiful location ran by very kind people”

Staying at Sakuya was a great experience. The hosts picked us up at Kawaguchiko station which was all very easy to arrange. The view at Mt Fuji is absolutely stunning. There is a possibility for your private time slot for the Onsen from which you can also see Mt Fuji which is pretty awesome! Renting a bike (at the guesthouse) or hiking around the Kawaguchi lake are nice options to explore the area. The hosts are also willing to drive you from&to a pick-up point. The breakfast and dinner are typically Japanese and taste good for a very reasonable price (about 600-800 Yen). The beds are like everywhere quite hard but well you will feel at home instantly with all the great aspects mentioned before, especially the warm, helpfull and welcoming family. So don't doubt any longer and book a stay at 'Homehouse' Sakuya :-)!

    So nice guesthouse”

I came here 2 years before. It is the second time to stay in Sakuya. Although it is a little bit far from the main station, but the location is so nice to see the Fuji mountain. Really enjoy the hotspring in the hotel. The breakfast and dinner quality are so nice and so traditional of Japanese Food with reasonable price. Good guesthouse service and helpful guesthouse owners. Look forward to stay in Sakuya again.

    Very comfortable & like-home !!”

We went to Sakuya Guest House during winter. though the location is a little bit far from the station, but we dont mind as we like the peaceful environment there. The Host pick us up from the station for free and also we ordered dinner from them too. The dinner is really sooo good !! i bet you to try if you are staying there! and there is free onsen for guest, it's private onsen (not the "open-to-all" kind) you just need to book the time with the host and you can fully enjoy the onsen session without any stranger surrounding you (and it's FOC) !! It was really a very good experience in Sakuya Guesthouse! I will definitely return to Sakuya if I'm going Fuji again :)

    Best Ryokan in Japan”

Cleanliness, owners were friendly and accommodating, onsen wonderful, beautiful view of Mt Fuji from every room and from onsen

Excellent. We would definitely come back. The Japanese breakfast and dinners were delicious. The owners were very nice and picked us up from Kawaguchiko Station. They also dropped us off at the station when leaving. The Inn was immaculate and clean. Even the onsen was clean and had a beautiful view of Mt Fuji. The Dining room had a beautiful view of mt Fuji. Sleeping on the futons were comfortable. You can reserve the onsen at night for a private bath. My sons hiked Mt Fuji and returned after 8pm. The owner picked them up and then fed them dinner. Great service. Can't wait to go back, relax from busy Tokyo and enjoy the peace and quiet there. I would rate Guesthouse Sakuya 4 out 5 stars. They may not be glitzy like a 5 star hotel but it is clean, comfortable, and relaxing.

    A wonderful relaxing vacation!”

    Cozy stay, great onsen, affordable

We enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse Sakuya very much and still think about it until now. The atmosphere was very nice. The onsen at Sakuya is superb with the view of Mt.Fuji on a less-cloudy day. The word Guesthouse may be misleading; if you think of it as a guesthouse, imagine it would be a high-end one. We would love to go back there again when we have kids. In summary, it was one of the most relaxing vacation we've ever had!

Abosolutely stunning view, value for money”

location, stunning view, and value for money

It was a great stay, it is certainly worth every penny. The guesthouse owner speaks fluent english - one of the few we found in Japan. The guesthouse although regarded as 2-star but had family onsen, it's own very cozy dining room and even can offer half board option. We choose this guesthouse because it offers Ryokan style bedroom. While normally to experience this kind of traditional sleeping people usually need to pay a lot more extra, in Sakuya guesthouse it wasn't necessarily so.

Very cozy and warm fire house, feels like home!”

Hotel pickup at station, nice host, warm fire place, exactly like home, clean and cozy

Sakuya is run by 2 mid age man, maybe a father and son. Home base guesthouse. They renovated this place 5 years ago. Very clean, warm, cozy and it feels like home! The owner came and pick us up at the last station from the bus station. It's kinda far from the main Kawaguchiko bus station, but by the local bus is able to reach. Though it is not at the main central spot of the lake, but it's located at a hill side where the view is great. We arrived with rain and in the night it was snowing! Is not easy to get food or convenient store there. We order a homecook meal at the guesthouse and it is delicious! Love this place, will be back again for sure! Private onsen is available too.

Splendid view, OK room, good breakfast”

We had a pleasant stay at Guesthouse Sakuya. It is a nice place in a quiet neighbourhood, surrounded by fields and forests. If you don't drive here by your own car, however, we imagine it can be somewhat difficult to get here. Especially the splendid views of Mt Fuji from our room, the dining room and the terrace are very impressing. Our room was comparatively equipped with everything you'd expect from a hotel at this price range. Even though it is a somewhat older building with wooden floors, it was surprisingly quiet. Overall, this is a nice place we can recommend to anyone looking for a small and quiet hotel without too many facilities providing a splendid view of Mt Fuji. And the breakfast was very delicious, too.

    Very comfortable modern ryokan”

Fuji-san view is their best feature

if you are arriving at kawaguchiko area by train and expect to have free pick up like i do, just make sure that you will arriving around 16.00. go directly to tourist information office at the right side of the station, and they will call the guesthouse only at around that time. be ready to wait few more mins as the guesthouse is quite remote. wifi is available at tourist office. at the guesthouse there's not much to do, though. however the owner kindly offers to block the onsen so i can use it privately. also, fuji-san can be viewed from your room, if you're lucky enough to stay during clear weather. yukata is provided, and you can experience to prepare your own bed, japanese way. overall i had a great experience staying at sakuya. the tatami room is quite modern and clean. service is everything as promised. breakfast is adequete for only yen. wifi available at public area.

    Quiet Neighbour”

Really enjoy our stay at Guesthouse Sakuya. The neighbourhood is very quiet. Very suitable if you will like to stay out of city. Guesthouse is not located near any convenience store. So it will be advisable to get some necessities from the convenience store at the main station before heading back to the guesthouse. Guesthouse do provide meals at additional costs. This guesthouse do have their on private onsen. Highly recommended to try! Will definitely be back at this guesthouse again.

Outstanding views on mount Fuji directly from your room”

Located on the north shore of the lake in a very quiet area Sakuya guest house offers comfortable Japanese style rooms with superb views on mount Fuji. Admiring the sunrise over the majestic mount from our futon was a lifetime experience! The hotel has also a nice onsen bath service. Good Japanese diner and breakfast in a nice dining room. The staff is very helpful. The hotel is a bit far from the town but a shuttle service is possible from/to the station in the morning and afternoon and from /to the Oishi park at any time. You can reach the park from the station by the red tourist bus. Highly recommended!

The Guesthouse is small but comfy. ”

Very attentive and friendly service, homey environment and very nice onsen

The guesthouse is rather far from the station/city center, however they provide free shuttle from and to station. The owner is very attentive, polite, and helpful. The guesthouse is small but comfy and homey. In most hotels providing onsen usually the bath is public bath however in Guesthouse Sakuya we were given private session for 1 hour to use the onsen which is a really nice addition to the service. The room we booked was Japanese style room with tatami flooring and we slept on futon which was our first experience. The futon was surprisingly comfortable and was not hard at all. The whole experience at Guesthouse Sakuya was very pleasant.
