Ryokan with the BEST traditional food, service and onsen experience. ”
I totally forgot to review my stay with them but if there is one thing to say about this establishment, it's their food; the breakfasts and dinners? HUGE portions and variety served in your room, ranging from fresh sashimi, stewed pork, pickles, tofu with miso (tasted like peanut butter), soup and rice. For breakfast, I do remember a huge spread as well but the one i remember most was having yoghurt with jam. The Onsen: If you're looking for a quiet and scenic retreat, look no further. There are 2 different bathrooms, one for women and the other, for men. And within each are 2 separate sections of the onsen; one inside the building and one, outside. The ones outside are basically tubs filled with hot water and the scenery is absolutely to die for. Go in the evening (4pm); you wont regret it! Though remember to wash your body down before dipping into the hot springs! They have allocated baskets/lockers to place your items/clothes and the bath times are planned to accommodate males and females bath times (women and men's bath times and rooms are different everyday so do look out for the signage before entering). There are hairdryers, soaps and shampoos in the onsen/bathrooms so you dont have to bring anything except yourself and your bathrobes/indoor slippers (which you can find in your room). The room: Has a powder room. It had cobwebs in the powder room but I didnt mind it; it is afterall, a ryokanwith rich history. The room, is extremely clean and spacious. The futon is crisp, clean and soft to sleep on. We went during autumn and it was cold. I slept closest to the charging point (power source) and my phone was freezing cold. Suggest to pack a warmer with you if youre planning to visit during autumn cause it was - 4 degrees celcius when we awoke at 4am 😂 There is a small souvenir store in the lobby and I really recommend getting the purple red bean wagashi/mochi(?). It's the same treat they provide on the first day you stay with them; can be found on the tabl

Great Ryokan”
Stayed there for two nights. The food was very good (as far as I can tell as a non-Japanese), the staff very friendly and helpful and the bathing area was small but beautiful (especially the tubs outside). I will definitely return if I'm ever in Hakone again.

Simple, lovely No frills ryokan for an easy Hakone escape!”
Yamadaya is located in the heart of Hakone. With the romance car from tokyo and cable car up to sound an the ryokan can be reached without any confusion for all kinds of travelers. The onsen was relaxing, the outdoor bath is exceptional with individual baths to sit in overlooking the Mountain View. Dinner and breakfast are served privately in the rooms and was delightful to enjoy the local seasonal ingredients. The ryokan can help shuttle you back to the local station as well. We had a lovely time.

Best ryokan”
I’ve stayed at Hakone 4 times in ryokans and Hakone Shirayunoyado Yamadaya is hands down THE best ryokan I have ever stayed at. The staff is super friendly, the in-room serviced breakfast and dinners are amazing, the location being 2-3 minutes walking from Sounzan Station is extremely convenient, and the complimentary shuttle service was very helpful. Next time I go back to Hakone I am definitely staying here again!

Excellent Location and Impeccable Service”
The service at this place is second to none. The staff take care of everything--meals in the room, turn down service, hot water delivered with a phone call. The facilities are a bit dated, but the location is perfect and you will not find better service at a five star resort.

Fantastic, traditional place to stay and explore Hakone”
Yamadaya Ryokan was fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, especially the amazing food. Fresh sashimi, delicious soups, really traditional and unique dishes. Most dinners consisted of 10+ dishes which were just incredible. This is a traditional Japanese Inn, so be prepared for sleeping on mattresses on the floor and set breakfast/dinner times. It is a terrific experience though and would highly recommend it for people wanting to experience a very traditional stay in Japan.

Traditional ryokan with onsen set in the mountain”
Ryokan located at Sounzan station up in the mountains, which could be some travel distance/ time from Hakone-Yumoto, but also made it a rustic getaway from the tourist crowds. Ryokan Manager was very friendly and helpful, offered to send us to the Open Air Museum when we checked out. Food was a sumptous spread and the all-day onsen with its view of the mountains was simply amazing!

comfortable & good Japan experience”
Nice hot spring environment for both outdoor locations with acceptance price. Food is good, room is clean & comfortable even for 3 people stay together. Its my 1st time to stay in traditional hot sping hotel. Nice experience to me. only problem is the staff can only communicate in simple English. and u need to get used to Japan sytle hot spring stay schedule, e.g. dinner at 6:30 latest & wake up at 7am (cos the staff need to set up.breakfast in the room)

Amazing stay at this traditional Japanese ryokan.”
Stayed here for 1 night as a group of 3 girls, and it was fantastic. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, from our lovely room overlooking the mountains, to the amazing feasts for dinner and breakfast (seriously, a TON of food and sooo good), to the gorgeous outdoor onsen also overlooking the mountains (3 diff floor options for onsen, rotated between male and female at different times throughout the day. Super relaxing soak after a long day, fabulous way to wake up in the morning!!) The service was very punctual - sometimes verging on pushy to be honest - but they thoroughly provided for everything we could have wanted. Also very conveniently located - right down the street from the ropeway and cable cars so it was very easy to get to Owakudani/Lake Ashi or different parts of town. They also provided complimentary pickup service from Gora station, all we had to do was provide our arrival time in advance and call when we got to the station! I would absolutely stay again, though perhaps for 2 nights instead of one so I could R&R more thoroughly and also make full use of all 3 floors of onsen!

Great Short Stay”
The stay was superb if you wanted to experience traditional spring bath hotel. The half board package included dinner and breakfast, which were served in the room. Food was ok and presentation was beautiful. We were not 'recommended' to go out from the hotel after 7pm due to possibility of wild boar, and night at Shozan can be very cool and dark. So we ended up hot spring at the hotel, supper, hotel spring again the whole night. Hot springs were fantastic, the outdoors one overseeing the valley and I can stay in the bath for more than an hour.

relaxing stay in beautiful surroundings”
We stayed for to night. It's a traditional japaness hotel with an absolutely beautifull view from the hotel over the mountains. The Onsens are wonderfull(both inside and outside onsens)with a beautifull view as well. The food in very good(all japaness cousine) and the hostess was very nice. It's possible to ask for western breakfast, wich can be nice when you are not used to a typical japaness breakfast. The hotel is located close to the ropeway wich will take you to the lake.
