Placed not too far (25 min drive) from Hilo airport and downtown, in pristine rain forest environ with a brook bubbling right next to the property. Wonderful, beautiful natural beauty. Lots of flora, fauna, and birds to watch. We stayed at the Rain Forest Cabin with private drive and locked gate. Kitchen facilities good for camping type, and quite complete. No need to eat out at all. Food expensive but KTA supermarket as daily sale that is reasonable. Definitely need rental car to do own touring on the Big Island rather than joining tours. Only negative is to make sure bring lots of anti-mosquito, anit-bug lotion.
We were really happy staying here in the big Bedroom upstairs. it was clean and the owners were very friendly. Only donwside: its far from the village.
Wir waren im Guesthouse untergebracht. Die Küche war leider nicht so sauber - ganzen Tische haben geklebt. Das Bad war auch schon ziemlich alt und nicht ganz so sauber.
Das Hamakua House bietet eine Einzigartige Übernachtungsmöglichkeit. Man fühlt sich sofort wohl und warm willkommen. Jedes Zimmer ist stilvoll im Hawaiianischen Stil eingerichtet mit kleinen Details und Willkommensgeschenk. Das ganze Haus ist sehr sauber und bietet jede Möglichkeit sich selbst zu versorgen oder mit den anderen Bewohnern gemeinsam Zeit zu verbringen. Das unglaubliche ist, dass es autark mit Wasser und Strom versorgt wird. Ein tolles Familienunternehmen. Die Hängemattenpavillions sehen auch sehr einladend aus, wurden von uns jedoch nicht genutzt. Ein kleiner Wasserfall mit Schwimmmöglichkeit macht das ganze perfekt. Außerdem ist ein Frühstück inbegriffen, was wir ansonsten auf Hawaii nirgends finden konnten. Es ist in allerdings im nächsten Ort in einer Bäckerei die auch aus einem Filmset stammen könnte nur halt original aus dem Jahr 1910. Seither hat sich dort wohl kaum etwas verändert. Erstaunlicherweise bekommt man dort aber superleckeres Gebäck und auch eine leckere Auswahl an Gluten freien Keksen. Lactosefrei war auch kein Problem. Sehr erstaunlich. Also absolute Empfehlung für das Guesthouse und Mr. Ed‘s Bakery

Coming from Seattle/Portland, we are used to rain (but not warm rain). The HG was a very pleasant find in the woods! Our room was comfortable and well-kept. Facilities were well-explained and easy to access. We will try to book again in the future!
