The main station is connected to the rest of the city by the underground S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations, which have their own shopping mall and covered access to nearby department stores. Recently refurbished, the ultra-modern main station contains over 20 shops, five cafes and restaurants and a tourist information centre providing visitors with free maps of the city. There are a number of eateries in the area around the station.
There are a wide variety of accommodation options catering to both business and leisure travelers. Numerous hotels are situated in the immediate vicinity of the station and Karlsplatz is little more that a five-minute walk away. Munich’s historic Marienplatz Square, home to the City Hall and its famous Glockenspiel, is east of the Hauptbanhof, and can also be reached on foot. After dark, the area directly around the station has a reputation for being unsafe, and it is advisable to avoid these areas after dark if traveling alone.
Transport to and from Munich Airport is easy via the S-Bahn lines S1 or S8, with trains leaving approximately every ten minutes. The journey time is forty minutes. A Lufthansa Airport Bus also departs every twenty minutes from the main station.
