Unbelievable old world charm”
Stayed 1 night in Stannum House, Tenterfield on our way from Sunshine Coast to Tamworth. Pretty little historic town with lots to see in the area. Stannum House is amazing. Built in 1888 it still has its beautiful old world charm. We stayed in the Julius Caesar room which was huge with a King bed and a double bed with ensuite. At first we were a little concerned about the noise of the trucks constantly going past the door but once in the room we couldn't hear any noise at all. The food is incredible. $9.50 buffet with a choice of 10 dishes some with a nice Sri Lankan flavour. The buffet is served in small amounts keeping the food hot and fresh all through the meal. The minute one buffet dish is emptied the chef cooks another fresh serve. Breakfast is another amazing full buffet and the Sri Lankan pancakes are delicious. Would totally recommend this boutique hotel to stay and have a meal. It is also a lovely sit on the verandah or in the front garden and enjoy a drink.
Exceptional”
For a casual visitor to Tenterfield, we were impressed with our stay at Stannum House. We will plan a r return visit to Tenterfield and will certainly try to book at this venue once again. Great stay, great staff and wonderful rooms.
Excellent value for money.”
Amazing value in one of the iconic historic buildings in whole Australia. Big rooms with extra beds. Big screen TV, external bathroom was bit annoying but at least it was not shared. Air conditioning would have been nice but again weather was beautiful in Tenterfield when I stayed so I didn't mind. Character of the hotel is worth exploring. Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Dinner and breakfast buffet at very reasonable price. I expected authentic Sri Lankan food (Owner is Sri Lankan I've been told) but it was rather conventional buffer, nothing fancy. You won't find anything better at this price anyway.
An amazing experience!”
This was such an amazing place to stay ... beyond the practicals (which were absolutely sorted!) it was an education, adventure and indulgence in the rich history of the historic town of Tenterfield. I felt very privileged to be sitting on the top of the mansions tower sipping on a glass of red and watching the sunset ... our room was regal to say the least and the staff were so very accommodating of our every need. WOW!
Carol from Australia”
This is without doubt one of the best motels we have experienced. The history of the house is only the beginning. We were warmly welcomed by our host and found the facilities to be clean, comfortable and amazing. The decor fits beautifully with the era of the time . Breakfast was provided and was delicious and plentiful as was the evening meal which we thoroughly enjoyed for a very modest price. We would recommend Stannum House to any of our friends and indeed have already done so. Thank you to our kind and generous hosts.
Historic highlight”
We loved the character and grandeur of this property which enabled us to imagine what life would have been like when Tenterfield was at the epicentre of Australian politics. We climbed the three staircases to admire the view of town and surrounding area from the tower. Staff were very efficient and friendly. Our room was large with high ceilings and cool without the need for air conditioning on a hot day. The breakfast buffet included in the room tariff had everything we expected along with some exotic extras. We'll definitely recommend this to friends and stay again if the opportunity arises.
Fantastic accommodation in Tenterfield”
Massive rooms, amazing history, and unbelievable value for such a grand old mansion. My family really enjoyed our 2 night stay while exploring Tenterfield, and we'll be back. The current managers are really friendly and bend over backwards to help in any way. They also gave us a free history tour of some of the rooms which was a bonus.
Step Back In Time”
So excited to stay at Stannum House and experience some of Australia's history. Loved the view from the roof look out. Comfortable, clean and very helpful and friendly staff. Big thasnk you to Jai for looking after my daughter and I. Breakfast and Dinner was great value and tasty. Would love to return o ne day.
An excellent stay in a wonderful place”
A superb restoration of a historic 1880s mansion/house. Great layout, decoration and furniture. Great staff. And great value for money in the restaurant - the Sri Lankan fish being a standout for us. Of course the 1880s did not have all of the features of modern buildings. Some bathrooms are not ensuite, some lighting a little dull and superb heritage curtains let in some morning light. If these are important to you, stay in a motel, but visit for lunch or dinner to experience the place.
beautiful historic building on an elevated view. friendly staff”
we were offered a huge room. nicely decorated. some of the furniture needs a review, otherwise the place is nicely preserved in its historic glamour. there is a spiral staircase to the roof balcony with excellent views. very friendly staff. great price for the experience.
Amazing!”
Stayed for one night and chose this accommodation as I love Australian Historical buildings. I was not disappointed. I was upgraded and from the minute I stepped inside this wonderful building I was taken back in time. Do yourself a favour and choose this amazing building to stay in. I was greeted enthusiastically, nothing was too much trouble, and breakfast was included. A fully cooked breakfast. Spotlessly clean and was lovely to just look at history which has been preserved, thankfully! Free tea and coffee in the common room and huge flat screen tv in my room. Bed was so comfy with all the items from yesteryear within the room and bathroom, and in common area. You will not be disappointed.
Lovely property in need of some love”
Stannum house was a lovely property with some amazing heritage to it. It was a great option for a couple who were passing through and staying for an evening. It felt however that the property could you a bit of attention. The room was large and well appointed however the furniture felt awkward. The host were lovely and friendly. The buffet breakfast definitely left something to be desired.
the best stay in tenterfield”
we did not expect it to be so good. the history of the house was above all expectations. the finish of the house was also a step back in history, all the ceder woodwork and period furniture and fixtures. the owner Paul was a great and informative host and the complinentary tour with him through the house was also a great part of the stay
Value for money”
Booked in advance as travelling to Gold Coast and wanted a break. After reading some of the reviews, I felt that we had to see for ourselves. Quiet, cosy, very helpful staff member who appeared to be jack of all trades,(10 /10 for him), meal was good value ,as was free breakfast. Have already suggested to many friends to call in themselves as some of the existing reviews are not to believed.Bad reviews are not worth the paper they are written on. Some people want Gold Star treatment for next to nothing. Will be returning.
What a find”
WE were greeted on arrive by the manager who escorted us to our room, gave us information about our private bathroom, dinner and breakfast arrangements. The Josephine room was huge, with a four poster bed, two single beds and the hugest television set I've ever seen in a motel or hotel room. Upstairs is a small sitting area with tea making facilities. There we met other guests who were so proud of their rooms that we had guided tours of each bedroom. All bedrooms are different, but furnished in the Victorian era. Dinner was a buffet - very adequate and extremely tasty - a Sri Lankan influence. The wine list, while not huge, had a very nice local sav blanc. The bed was very comfortable and even though the night was cool, we did not need extra blankets. Breakfast in the morning was a buffet again with at least seven different hot dishes as well as cereals. Value for money - brilliant.
We loved this place!”
My teenage girls and I loved staying in this beautiful house. We could have stayed longer. The rooms are gorgeous and the staff were friendly, helpful, and inviting. The other guest were easy to have chats with. Would highly recommend to anyone and we are working out a time to revisit!
Exceptional”

INTERESTING STOP OVER”
House is very different but a bit run down. Staff excellent and food fantastic. Room great to look at but watch out for broken items and furniture not stable but it is old. Lots of stairs for the unwary. Good value and great Breakfast.
Great stay”
Well worth a visit, don't miss the historic tour
Historic”
